Check Starlink usage in the app’s Data usage screen or in your account’s subscription details. Whether there is an allowance to exceed depends on your plan: Residential includes unlimited Residential data, while some Roam and Priority plans have different allowance and post-allowance rules. Before trying to stay under a limit, confirm the plan attached to the service line you are checking; Starlink does not have one universal data cap or one post-allowance rule for all subscribers.

Check Starlink data usage

Starlink provides two ways to view usage: its mobile app and its account website. The web account is available at starlink.com/account/home. In either place, make sure you inspect the subscription you mean to check; an account may have more than one service line, and a reading for one line should not be treated as the total or allowance for another.

In the Starlink app

  1. Open the Starlink app and tap the menu in the upper-left corner.
  2. Select Data usage.
  3. For a more detailed view, tap the graph in the upper-right corner of that screen.

The main Data usage screen is a convenient way to monitor the service, while the graph provides a more detailed view of the usage information Starlink makes available. The display is useful for checking progress, but it is not necessarily a live meter: Starlink says data is tracked in UTC and the displayed amount can take several minutes to catch up.

On the Starlink website

  1. Sign in to your account at starlink.com/account/home.
  2. Open Subscriptions.
  3. Select the subscription or service line you want to inspect.
  4. Find the Data section.

Starlink says its account page and app can also be used to manage the service plan. Keeping the app up to date helps ensure you have access to its current features. If a menu or label looks different, first confirm that you are signed in to the right account and have selected the right subscription; interface labels and available plan controls can change.

What should you check first?

Start by identifying the service line and reading the plan name shown for it. Then compare the usage figure with that plan’s allowance, if it has one, and check what the plan says happens after the allowance is used. This order matters: looking at a large usage number without knowing the plan can make normal, unlimited Residential use look like an impending cap, while a Priority subscriber may need to pay attention to a separate automatic additional-data control.

Starlink’s Help Center page titled “How do I manage my data?” describes its account and app as the places to track monthly usage and manage the plan. Use those Starlink controls for your account-level decision, rather than assuming that a separate device or router is showing the exact total Starlink will use for account purposes.

What the usage number means—and why it may differ elsewhere

Starlink calculates usage from bytes sent to and received from connected devices. That includes speed-test traffic. A test can therefore contribute to the usage figure even though it may feel like a measurement rather than ordinary browsing. If you are close to an allowance, running several tests can add traffic; do not assume that speed tests are excluded from the displayed total.

The figure is not necessarily updated instantly: Starlink tracks data using UTC, and the display may lag by several minutes. UTC is the time standard Starlink uses for tracking, so a local calendar day or the time shown on another device may not line up exactly with the period represented in an account display. A difference around a day boundary does not by itself mean that usage is missing or that your plan reset at local midnight.

For the most accurate figure, use the monthly statement rather than treating a momentary app or account reading as final. The app and account page are useful for monitoring progress during a cycle; Starlink identifies the statement as its most accurate monthly usage figure. If a decision depends on the final amount for a month, compare the statement rather than a screenshot taken before all recent activity has appeared.

A router or network-monitoring device may report a different total. It may count different traffic, measure it in a different way, or record usage at different intervals. Even when both numbers are expressed in gigabytes, they do not necessarily share the same measurement rules or reporting window. A third-party total can help you understand activity on your own network, but it should be treated as a separate estimate rather than as a substitute for Starlink’s account-level usage or statement.

Starlink also says its router does not show consumption broken down by individual device. The Starlink usage view is therefore not a per-device activity report: it cannot be relied on to answer how much of the total came from a particular phone, television, computer, or other connected device. If you need device-level visibility, a separate network device may offer its own monitoring features, but its totals may differ from Starlink’s and are not established as the authoritative billing measure.

Starlink distinguishes terminal activity from router activity: terminal software updates and health checks are not counted toward monthly usage, while the router may use a small amount of counted data for its own software updates and health monitoring. That distinction is another reason not to expect every router estimate or local network counter to match the account total exactly.

Does your Starlink plan have a data cap?

There is no single data-cap rule for every Starlink subscriber. Check the plan name and terms shown for your own subscription before treating a usage figure as a limit. Starlink’s plan terms and availability can vary by market and change over time. The plan distinctions below describe Residential, Roam 100GB and 300GB, and Local or Global Priority behavior specifically; they are not a complete catalog of every service offered in every location.

Plan type described by Starlink Allowance and what happens afterward Additional-data behavior
Residential Residential service includes an unlimited amount of Residential data. Congestion and bandwidth-intensive activity can still affect performance during peak periods; that is not a stated monthly data cap. No Residential data top-up rule is established here.
Roam 100GB and Roam 300GB After the applicable allowance is used, service automatically switches to low-speed unlimited data. Starlink says higher-bandwidth activities, including video streaming, large downloads, and video calls, will be limited. The post-allowance behavior described applies to these specified Roam allowances; do not assume it applies to every Roam plan.
Local Priority and Global Priority These plans have a monthly Priority data limit. The account lets users view progress toward that limit. Users can opt in to automatic additional Priority data. Additional data is supplied in 50GB increments at rates specific to the plan and is charged on the next invoice. The setting remains active until the user opts out.

The table describes the plan types for which these rules are established, not a complete catalog of every Starlink plan or market. Verify your current local plan details and any applicable rates in your account before relying on an allowance or price. Do not assume an advertised name, allowance, price, or control is available to every subscriber; local availability and current terms matter.

Residential: unlimited data is not a promise of identical performance

Starlink’s Residential terms describe an unlimited amount of Residential data. A Residential customer should not interpret ordinary monthly usage as evidence of a cap simply because the app displays a number. There can still be performance effects: Starlink notes that congestion and bandwidth-intensive activity can affect performance during peak periods. That is a performance consideration, not the same thing as a stated monthly allowance after which a Residential connection automatically changes to low-speed unlimited service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the distinction clear when deciding whether to reduce usage. If the account identifies the service as Residential, the cap-avoidance rules for Roam 100GB or 300GB should not be applied to it. Instead, use the plan terms and the performance information Starlink gives for that service.

Roam 100GB and 300GB: service continues at low speed after allowance

For the specified Roam 100GB and Roam 300GB offerings, Starlink says service automatically changes to low-speed unlimited data after the allowance is exceeded. “Unlimited” in this description does not mean that every activity remains practical at the same speed. Starlink specifically says higher-bandwidth activities such as video streaming, large downloads, and video calls will be limited.

This means an exhausted allowance is not described as a complete service cutoff for these plans, but it can change what you can comfortably do. A reader planning a large download or video call should check usage before relying on the connection for that task, especially if the displayed amount is close to the plan’s allowance. Confirm that the service line is actually on Roam 100GB or Roam 300GB before relying on this behavior; the same outcome should not be generalized to every Roam plan or market.

Local and Global Priority: pay attention to automatic additional data

For Local Priority and Global Priority, Starlink says the account can show progress toward the monthly Priority data limit. Users can opt in to receive additional Priority data automatically after that limit is exhausted. The additional data is provided in 50GB increments, charged at rates specific to the plan, and placed on the next invoice. Starlink says the setting remains active until the user opts out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical consequence is that a Priority customer should check both the usage progress and the additional-data setting. Seeing a limit is not enough to know whether reaching it could trigger further purchases. If you do not want automatic additional data, find the relevant control in your account and opt out; then verify the setting has changed. Because rates are plan-specific and terms can vary, check the rate shown for your own service rather than budgeting from a price quoted for another plan or market.

How to avoid an unexpected allowance or charge

If your subscription has a usage allowance, use the Starlink account figure to monitor it and check again before the billing cycle ends. For Priority service, review whether automatic additional-data purchasing is enabled. That control matters because an opt-in setting can continue buying further blocks until you turn it off. A good check is not just “How much have I used?” but also “What does this specific plan do next, and is a purchase control turned on?”

Before the allowance is close

  • Confirm the exact plan and service line. Read the plan name and allowance attached to the line you are using. Do not apply the Roam 100GB or 300GB rule to another Roam tier without checking its terms.
  • Use Starlink’s own view for progress. Open Data usage in the app or the Data section under Subscriptions on the website. If there are multiple subscriptions, select the one whose usage you need.
  • Allow for reporting delay. The display may take several minutes to reflect recent activity and uses UTC. Avoid treating a reading taken just before a threshold as an exact real-time count.
  • Recheck before the cycle ends. If your plan has an allowance, review the account as the end of the billing cycle approaches, rather than relying on an old screenshot or a third-party router’s estimate.
  • Do not rely on an unverified price. If the plan permits extra Priority data, check the plan-specific rate in your account and remember the 50GB increment and next-invoice billing behavior.

For Priority data

  • Review the automatic additional-data setting in the account if you do not want additional Priority data to be purchased automatically after the limit is exhausted.
  • If automatic additional data is enabled, account for 50GB increments, plan-specific rates, and the charge appearing on the next invoice.
  • Remember that the setting stays active until you opt out; reaching the limit does not by itself turn off the automatic setting.
  • After opting out, verify the setting in the account. Do not assume a setting has changed until the account reflects the choice.

The available instructions establish that Priority users can opt in or out and that the setting persists until they opt out; they do not establish one universal menu path for that control. Follow the current control shown for your own plan rather than relying on directions for a different interface version.

For Roam 100GB or 300GB

Plan for the possibility of low-speed unlimited service once the allowance is exhausted. Starlink specifically identifies streaming video, large downloads, and video calls as higher-bandwidth activities that will be limited after the switch. The service does not stop entirely under the described post-allowance rule, but those activities may not work as expected at low speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want to avoid reaching the allowance, the supported steps are to monitor the Starlink usage figure, confirm the allowance tied to the account, and check progress again before the cycle ends. Starlink’s information does not establish a recommended universal usage target or a single data-saving setting that guarantees you will stay below the allowance, so avoid relying on a generic benchmark.

Which figure should you use?

For in-cycle monitoring, use the Starlink app or account Data view. For the most accurate monthly total, Starlink identifies the monthly statement as the best figure. For per-device activity, neither Starlink’s router nor its account-level total is a device-by-device report. A third-party network monitor can offer a different view of traffic, but do not treat its count as Starlink’s billing total.

If your usage numbers do not match

  • The app and a router show different totals: Starlink and third-party devices may count or record traffic differently. Use Starlink’s account data and monthly statement for the account-level figure.
  • The app has not changed after recent activity: Allow for the several-minute reporting delay and UTC tracking. A brief wait does not mean traffic was excluded.
  • You expected a device-by-device breakdown: Starlink’s router does not provide one. The overall usage figure is based on data sent and received by connected devices, including speed tests.
  • You think a speed test should not count: Starlink includes speed-test traffic in its usage calculation, so test traffic can contribute to the displayed amount.
  • You are unsure whether you have a cap: Recheck the plan attached to the specific service line and its current terms. Residential, the named Roam allowances, and Priority plans do not share one universal post-allowance rule.
  • You are unsure why the time period looks different: Starlink tracks usage using UTC. A local date boundary may not match the period reflected in the usage display.
  • You are concerned about a final monthly total: Consult the monthly statement, which Starlink identifies as its most accurate usage figure.

Use the right figure for the decision

For a quick check, the app or account’s Data view is the practical place to monitor usage. For the most accurate monthly total, Starlink identifies the statement as the authoritative figure. For decisions about slowing service, additional-data purchases, or pricing, the plan shown in your own account—not a general Starlink-wide cap assumption—is the relevant control.

In short, first identify the plan, then check the usage for that service line, and finally apply that plan’s rule. Residential includes unlimited Residential data; the specified Roam 100GB and 300GB plans move to low-speed unlimited data after their allowance; and Priority customers should check both their monthly limit and whether automatic 50GB additional-data purchases are enabled. Usage views can lag, measurements from other devices may differ, and current local plan terms determine the outcome.

Does Starlink usage update in real time?

Not necessarily. Starlink tracks data using UTC, and its displayed usage may take several minutes to update. Starlink identifies the monthly statement as its most accurate monthly usage figure.

Do Starlink speed tests count toward data usage?

Yes. Starlink calculates usage from bytes sent and received by connected devices, and speed-test traffic is included.

Can I see how much data each device uses in the Starlink app or router?

Starlink says its router does not provide per-device usage breakdowns. A third-party router or network monitor may offer its own device-level estimates, but it can measure traffic differently and should not be treated as Starlink’s account-level total.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every Starlink plan have a monthly data cap?

No. Starlink’s Residential terms include unlimited Residential data. Some plans, including the specified Roam 100GB and 300GB and Priority offerings, have allowances or limits with different post-allowance rules. Confirm the terms for the plan and market shown in your account.

What happens after I use my Roam 100GB or 300GB allowance?

Starlink says service automatically switches to low-speed unlimited data after the applicable allowance is used. Higher-bandwidth activities such as streaming video, large downloads, and video calls will be limited. Do not assume the same rule applies to every Roam plan.

How can I avoid automatic Priority data charges?

Check the additional-data setting for your Local or Global Priority plan in your Starlink account and opt out if you do not want additional data purchased automatically. Starlink says purchases are in 50GB increments, charged at plan-specific rates on the next invoice, and the setting remains active until you opt out.

Why is my Starlink account total different from my router’s total?

The devices may count different traffic, measure it differently, or record usage at different intervals. Use Starlink’s account view for in-cycle progress and its monthly statement for the most accurate monthly total.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Check usage in the Starlink app or account, but interpret the number using the plan attached to that service line. The reading may lag and third-party totals may differ; the monthly statement is Starlink’s most accurate monthly figure. Residential includes unlimited Residential data, the specified Roam allowances switch to low-speed unlimited data when exhausted, and Priority customers should verify whether automatic 50GB additional-data purchases are enabled.
