To check whether an SFX power supply will work with your case and GPU, verify the exact PSU model’s dimensions, the case’s supported PSU format and length limit, space for plugged-in cables, the GPU’s physical clearance, and the PSU’s rated output and GPU connectors. SFX and SFX-L labels alone do not establish that the complete build will fit.
Start with the exact PSU model
Find the manufacturer’s product page or manual for the specific power supply you plan to use. Record its listed form factor and dimensions, including its length or depth. Do not rely on a retailer’s shorthand or assume that every SFX-L model has identical dimensions: check the exact unit.

SFX-L is a distinct size label, so a case that accepts SFX does not automatically accept every SFX-L power supply. The case documentation—not the label alone—determines whether a particular model is supported.

In the case maker’s manual or support page, look for supported PSU formats, the maximum PSU length, and any installation notes about brackets, fan positions, motherboard chambers, or overlap with the graphics card. A stated maximum body length is only one part of the fit check: the power connectors and cables also take up space once installed.
#1 Best Overall
- Fully Modular PSU: Reliable and efficient low-noise power supply with fully modular cabling, so you only have to connect the cables your system build needs.
- ATX 3.1 Certified: Compliant with the ATX 3.1 power standard, supporting the PCIe Gen 5.0 platform and resisting transient power spikes.
- Low-Noise Fan: Equipped with a premium 92mm FDB (Fluid Dynamic Bearing) fan, the PSU ensures efficient and quiet thermal performance.
- Native 12V-2x6 Connector: SP Series V2 Gold features a two-tone 12V-2x6 power cable with visual cues for safe connections, enhancing clarity and reliability for high-performance 50/40 series graphics cards.
- Upgraded Standby Power & Reliable Power Backed by 10-Year Hardware Protection: The SP Series V2 Gold features an upgraded 5VSB (standby) rail, increasing its current capacity from 2.5A to 3A, better supporting today's power-hungry peripherals.
For example, Fractal Design’s Mood case support information (2024) specifies a maximum PSU length of 130 mm plus 30 mm for installed cable connectors. That allowance applies to that case; it is not a general SFX or SFX-L clearance rule.
Check whether the case requires a particular mounting bracket or orientation. Some larger cases can mount an SFX power supply using an SFX-to-ATX adapter bracket; be quiet!, for example, lists an SFX-to-ATX adapter bracket with its SFX L Power product. Use a bracket only where the case and PSU instructions confirm the mounting arrangement.
Check GPU fit as a separate constraint
Compare the exact graphics card’s length, height, and thickness with the case’s stated limits. Then account for the card’s power connector and cable route: a card can meet the published body dimensions and still conflict with a side panel, top panel, PSU, or cable bend.

- Compact Power Solution: APEVIA SFX-AP500W 500W Power Supply designed for Mini ITX Solution, Micro ATX, and SFX form factor systems
- Comprehensive Connector Options: Includes 1 x 20+4pin Main Power, 1 x 8pin 12V(P4+4), 1 x 6/8pin PCIe, 3 x SATA, and 2 x 4pin Molex connectors for versatile compatibility
- Space-Saving Dimensions: Measures 125mm x 100mm x 63.5mm (4.9 inches x 3.94 inches x 2.5 inches) - L x W x H, designed for small form factor builds
- Proper Installation Required: The power supply will not power on simply by connecting the power cord to both the power supply and wall outlet. Ensure that all the power supply cables are properly connected to the PC for it to power on
- Flexible CPU Power Connection: The 8pin CPU connector can be split apart to become a 4+4 by pushing one end of the 4pin down and the other end of the 4pin up for motherboards that require a 4pin power
NVIDIA’s 2024 SFF-Ready case guidance specifies 312 mm of length clearance and 154.5 mm of clearance in the relevant orientation. Those figures belong to that guideline, not to every small-form-factor case or GPU. NVIDIA says SFF-Ready cases must have enough space for an SFF-Ready Enthusiast GeForce card, its bundled power connector, and the other necessary PC components.
Confirm power capacity and connectors
Read the GPU maker’s recommendation for PSU capacity and the GPU’s required power connectors, then compare them with the exact PSU’s rated output and included cable set. Wattage by itself does not show whether the PSU has the connector your card needs, or whether that connector and cable can be routed safely in the case.
As a product example—not a recommendation for every build—Corsair lists the SF-L Series SF850L as an SFX-L unit with 850 W continuous output and a PCIe 5.1 12V-2×6 GPU cable. Check its dimensions and cable clearance against the case, and compare its connectors and capacity with the requirements for your particular GPU and system.

Use this compatibility checklist
- Identify the exact parts. Write down the PSU, case, and graphics card model numbers; family names alone may cover different dimensions or connector configurations.
- Compare PSU dimensions with the case limit. Confirm both the listed form factor and body length against the case manual or support page.
- Allow for connections and routing. Check clearance for installed PSU plugs and cables, and for the GPU’s power connector and cable path. Do not treat a PSU body-length limit as proof that the cables will fit.
- Check the GPU’s physical dimensions. Verify length, thickness, and height against the case, including any case-specific notes on orientation, brackets, fans, or component overlap.
- Verify electrical compatibility. Match the PSU’s rated output and included GPU connectors to the GPU maker’s recommendation and the needs of the build.
- Confirm the full arrangement. Review the case, PSU, and GPU manuals or product pages together. If the manufacturers do not state the needed combined clearance or cable-bend room, consider the fit unconfirmed until the measurements and routing have been checked.
What to do when a specification is missing
Do not infer clearance from a product’s form factor or from a maximum-length number that excludes cable space. Check manufacturer diagrams and installation notes for the missing dimension, and account for the components and panels that occupy the same area. If a manufacturer does not specify cable bend room or combined component limits, the published specifications alone may not settle whether the arrangement will fit.
This method establishes what to verify; it does not determine fit for a particular build without its exact case, GPU, and PSU models. No hands-on fit test is claimed here.
