How to Check Satellite Internet Availability and Coverage at Your Address

Check the FCC National Broadband Map, verify the exact address with provider tools, and assess installation requirements before choosing satellite internet.

To find out whether satellite internet is reported or offered at your home, search the complete address on the FCC National Broadband Map, then enter that same address in each provider’s availability checker. The FCC map is a useful starting point, not an order confirmation: provider-reported coverage, a provider’s current eligibility decision, and a usable spot to install equipment are three different things.

What an availability result can—and cannot—tell you

Satellite internet availability is address-specific. A provider may report service at a mapped location, but that result does not by itself confirm that you can place an order, which plans are currently offered, or whether an installer can find a suitable location at your property.

The FCC National Broadband Map shows fixed broadband services reported for locations in the United States, including satellite. Its location view can identify providers, technologies, and maximum advertised download and upload speeds reported for a location. Those maximum advertised figures are not a promise of the speed your connection will achieve.

The map’s information is based on provider submissions and is subject to updates and challenges. Fixed providers file availability data twice a year; the FCC also describes verification, location updates, and public input as part of how the map is updated. Check the live map’s data-as-of date rather than assuming that a result reflects today’s offer.

In practical terms, you are checking three separate questions:

  1. Does a provider report service at the mapped location? The FCC map helps answer this first question.
  2. Will the provider currently accept an order for this exact address? The provider’s own address checker or a direct confirmation is the better answer.
  3. Can the equipment be installed and used at the property? You must inspect the sky view and other site conditions yourself or with the provider’s installer.

A “yes” to the first question is useful, but it should not be treated as a guarantee of the other two.

Check the FCC map for providers reporting service

  1. Open the FCC National Broadband Map. Use the fixed broadband map for a home or small business location.
  2. Search the full street address. Select the matching address result. The FCC says an address in its database appears in capital letters as a selectable result. If you do not have a street address, you can search by town and state or use the map’s location view.
  3. Open the result for the location. Review the providers shown, their reported technologies, and the maximum advertised download and upload speeds displayed. Note which entries are satellite providers.
  4. Check the data-as-of date. Treat the result as a snapshot of reported availability, not a real-time inventory of open orders or a guarantee that an offer remains available.
  5. Record any provider you want to investigate. You will need to check each one separately on its own site using the same complete address.

If the map does not return the exact street address, try the town and state or use the map’s location view to find the relevant point. A map point that is missing or placed incorrectly is a different problem from a provider being incorrectly shown as available; the FCC has separate challenge routes for location points and availability information.

How to read the FCC location view

The location view is most useful as a provider-discovery tool. It can show the technologies reported for the selected location and the maximum advertised download and upload speeds associated with those reports. Look specifically for satellite entries rather than assuming that every technology listed is satellite.

Write down the provider name, technology, and displayed maximum speeds before leaving the page. This gives you a consistent list to check on provider websites. It also lets you notice when a provider’s current address-specific offer differs from the map entry without assuming that either one is automatically wrong.

Read the map’s data-as-of date along with the result. Providers submit fixed availability information twice annually, and the FCC may update the map through verification, location changes, and public input. Consequently, the map can be accurate as a report of submitted information while still lagging behind a provider’s current ordering system.

What “provider-reported” means

The map is built from information submitted through the FCC’s Broadband Data Collection. It is not a live reservation system, an installation appointment, or a speed test. A provider can report a location as served while a current plan finder applies a capacity, plan, or address restriction. Conversely, a provider may have changed its offer after the map’s displayed data date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the map to create a shortlist, then verify every candidate through the provider. Do not use a broad coverage statement, a nearby address, or the map’s highest number as proof that your household can order that exact service.

Confirm the address directly with each provider

Use the provider’s own address checker after identifying candidates on the FCC map. This is the step that can show current plan or ordering eligibility for the specific address.

Starlink

Use Starlink’s availability map and enter the service address. Review the result for that location and follow the provider’s current steps to determine whether an order can be placed. The checker’s result is about address eligibility; it does not tell you whether trees, buildings, or other obstructions leave a suitable installation spot on your property.

When checking Starlink, use the address where the terminal will actually be used, not a billing address. Save the result or note the plan and terms shown so you can compare them with another provider on the same basis. If the page indicates a restriction or asks you to wait, treat that as the current provider decision even if the FCC map lists Starlink at the location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hughesnet

Use Hughesnet’s plan finder and enter the street address, city, state, and ZIP code. It returns locally available plan information. The cited Hughesnet service page describes service in the contiguous United States, Alaska, and Puerto Rico; it links to separate country sites for Latin America, so the US FCC workflow should not be assumed to apply outside the United States.

Record the plan information returned for the exact address, including the recurring price, stated speeds, data or traffic terms, equipment conditions, and contract or cancellation information. Those details can vary by offer and should be checked again at checkout.

Check the same address carefully

  • Use the service location, not a billing address or a nearby road intersection.
  • Enter the full address, including apartment or unit details when applicable.
  • If a provider’s form cannot identify the location, check spelling, ZIP code, and address formatting, then try the provider’s available address or location-support route.
  • Read the result for the exact location. A provider’s general service-area statement does not establish eligibility at your home.
  • Keep a note of the date you checked. Provider checkers and offers are dynamic, so a result can change later.

Provider checkers and plan offers can change. Confirm the current eligibility, plan terms, fees, and any address-level restrictions with the provider before making a purchase decision.

Check whether your property has a suitable installation location

A provider may serve an address while the property still presents an installation obstacle. Availability tools do not assess the view of the sky from your roof, yard, or other proposed equipment location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Starlink’s sky-view requirement

Starlink says the terminal needs an unobstructed view of the sky and directs customers to its app to find a suitable setup location. Use the app to assess the actual place you might install the equipment; an address checker alone cannot confirm that the view is clear.

Check more than one possible spot if the first location is blocked by trees, buildings, or rooflines. The important point is not the address on the map but the view from the proposed terminal location. If no suitable view is apparent, ask Starlink about the provider’s current installation options before ordering equipment.

Hughesnet’s sky-view requirement

Hughesnet says a clear view of the southern sky is required. Consider whether trees, buildings, rooflines, or other obstacles could interfere with that view, and ask the provider about installation requirements if you are uncertain.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Do not assume that an open view from a driveway is equivalent to an open view from the eventual dish or terminal location. Installation requirements apply to the equipment’s actual position. If you rent, live in a managed building, or need a roof mount, also confirm that you have permission for the proposed installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep these checks in order: first establish that a provider will serve the address, then determine whether the property has a usable installation spot. A positive result on one does not answer the other.

What to do if the FCC map looks wrong

The map’s challenge process is useful when the mapped information does not match your situation. Identify whether the issue is the location itself or the provider’s availability entry before submitting a challenge.

  • The home or business point is missing or misplaced: use the FCC’s location-challenge process to report a missing or incorrect mapped location.
  • A provider is listed as available but says it does not serve the address, or the listing otherwise appears inaccurate: use the FCC’s availability-challenge process.

A challenge addresses the map record; it is not an order request to the provider. If you need to know whether you can buy service now, rely on the provider’s address checker or direct confirmation for current eligibility.

Keep the two challenge types separate. An incorrect map point can make an address difficult to find even when a provider serves the area. An availability dispute concerns the provider or technology shown for a correctly mapped location. Describing the right problem helps the FCC review the appropriate record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare providers only after they confirm your address

If more than one provider’s checker confirms service, compare the offers returned for your location—not a general advertisement or the map’s highest reported speed. The FCC map can help identify reported providers and maximum advertised speeds, while the provider’s plan finder is needed for current offer details.

What to compare What to verify for your address
Monthly service charge and one-time fees Current recurring charge, equipment or setup fees, and any other costs shown in the provider’s offer.
Advertised download and upload speeds The speeds advertised for the specific plan available at your address. Do not treat an FCC map maximum as a guarantee of actual performance.
Data or traffic terms Any plan-specific data limits, traffic-management terms, or other usage conditions disclosed by the provider.
Equipment and installation What equipment is required, whether installation is included or charged separately, and any site or sky-view conditions.
Contract and cancellation terms Whether the offer has a commitment, what cancellation entails, and any applicable fees or equipment-return conditions.
Eligibility restrictions Any address-, capacity-, or plan-specific limitations that affect whether the offer can be ordered or used.

Compare only terms the provider actually states for the address and plan you are considering. If an important term is missing or unclear, ask the provider before placing the order rather than inferring it from the map or another address’s offer.

A practical comparison worksheet

Create one row for each provider confirmed at your address. In addition to the provider name, write down the checker date, plan name, monthly charge, one-time charges, advertised download and upload speeds, data or traffic rules, equipment ownership or rental conditions, installation requirements, contract length, cancellation terms, and any capacity or address restriction. This prevents a low introductory price or a high headline speed from hiding a condition that matters to your household.

Keep the FCC entry in a separate column labeled “reported maximum,” not “expected speed.” That wording preserves the distinction between a map report and the provider’s current plan. If the two numbers differ, verify the plan details with the provider rather than averaging them or selecting the larger figure.

Common problems and the next step

The FCC map shows a provider, but its checker does not show service

The FCC entry is provider-reported availability data, not a completed order. Confirm the address format in the provider checker and contact the provider if the result remains unclear. If you believe the FCC availability entry itself is wrong, use the FCC availability-challenge route.

The address is missing or the map point is in the wrong place

Try a town-and-state search or the map’s location view to locate the area. If the actual mapped location is missing or inaccurate, submit a location challenge rather than an availability challenge.

The address qualifies, but you are unsure about installation

Assess the specific installation spot using the provider’s stated sky-view guidance. For Starlink, use its app to find a suitable location; for Hughesnet, account for its clear-southern-sky requirement. Ask the provider about site requirements if the property does not have an obvious unobstructed view.

The map lists speeds, but the provider’s offer looks different

The map shows reported maximum advertised speeds for a location; it is not a guarantee of live performance or necessarily a description of every plan currently orderable. Check the provider’s current address-specific plan details and compare those terms directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A general coverage page says “available,” but the address tool disagrees

Use the address-level result as the more relevant ordering signal. General service-area language does not account for a particular location, capacity condition, or plan restriction. Contact the provider for clarification and keep the FCC result separate from the provider’s current eligibility decision.

You are comparing an old price with a current offer

Return to the provider’s current plan finder and record the price and fees displayed for your address. Do not rely on an old advertisement, a cached page, or another customer’s plan terms. Provider offers are dynamic and can differ by location.

A repeatable address-checking checklist

  1. Gather the complete service address, including unit information and ZIP code.
  2. Search that address on the FCC National Broadband Map and select the capitalized matching result.
  3. Read the location view for reported satellite providers, technologies, maximum advertised speeds, and the data-as-of date.
  4. Write down every satellite provider you want to investigate.
  5. Enter the identical service address into each provider’s official checker.
  6. Save or note the current plans, prices, fees, speeds, data terms, equipment requirements, and restrictions.
  7. Check the proposed installation location: Starlink requires an unobstructed sky view, while Hughesnet requires a clear view of the southern sky.
  8. Ask the provider about any unclear eligibility, capacity, installation, contract, or cancellation condition.
  9. If the FCC location is wrong, use the location-challenge process; if the provider availability entry is wrong, use the availability-challenge process.
  10. Choose only after comparing confirmed, address-specific offers.

Does this process work outside the United States?

The FCC National Broadband Map and the workflow described here are for the United States. For another country, use the provider’s local availability checker and the relevant regulator or government broadband map. Provider coverage and plan terms may differ by country, so do not treat a US map result as evidence of service elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is satellite internet available at my address?

Search your complete address on the FCC National Broadband Map to see which providers report fixed satellite service, then enter the same address into each provider’s own checker. Only the provider can confirm the current orderable offer for your location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I check satellite internet coverage at my house?

Use the FCC map’s fixed broadband location view, select the exact address, and review the satellite providers and reported maximum speeds. Verify each candidate with its address checker and inspect the property for the required sky view.

Can I get Starlink at my address?

Enter the service address in Starlink’s availability map. The result indicates address eligibility, but Starlink also requires an unobstructed view of the sky; use its app to evaluate a possible installation location.

Does the FCC broadband map show satellite internet?

Yes. The FCC National Broadband Map’s fixed broadband layer includes satellite service and can show providers, technology, and maximum advertised download and upload speeds reported for a selected location.

Why does the FCC map show service when a provider says my address is unavailable?

The map uses provider-submitted availability data and is updated through filings, verification, location updates, and public input. Its data may not match a provider’s current ordering decision. Confirm the address format with the provider and use the FCC availability-challenge process if the map entry appears incorrect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the speeds on the FCC map guaranteed?

No. They are maximum advertised speeds reported for the location, not a guarantee of actual performance or a live speed test. Compare them with the current, address-specific plan details from the provider.

What if my address is missing from the FCC map?

Try searching by town and state or use the map’s location view. If the mapped location is missing or placed incorrectly, submit a location challenge. A location challenge is different from challenging a provider’s availability entry.

What sky view does satellite internet need?

Starlink says its terminal needs an unobstructed view of the sky and recommends its app for finding a suitable setup location. Hughesnet says a clear view of the southern sky is required. An address result does not evaluate trees, buildings, or rooflines.

What should I compare when two providers serve my address?

Compare the current monthly charge and one-time fees, advertised download and upload speeds, data or traffic terms, equipment and installation conditions, contract and cancellation terms, and any address-, capacity-, or plan-specific restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does this FCC checking process apply outside the United States?

No. The FCC map described here is for the United States. In another country, use the local provider availability tools and the relevant government or regulator broadband map.

The Bottom Line

Start with the exact address on the FCC National Broadband Map, but treat its result as a provider-reported starting point. Confirm the same address through each provider, compare the current offer and fees, and verify that your property has the required sky view before ordering.
