Check your RTX 5090’s temperature while the game or workload that concerns you is running, then compare it with the specification for your exact card. NVIDIA lists a 90 °C maximum for its reference/Founders Edition design, but that is a maximum—not a recommended gaming target—and partner-card specifications can differ.
How to check RTX 5090 temperature while gaming
Use an overlay or monitoring utility, then observe the card under the workload that causes the high reading. Temperature is workload-specific; a brief desktop reading does not tell you how the card behaves during a demanding game.

- Open NVIDIA App’s performance overlay. NVIDIA says the in-game overlay can show GPU temperature and clock speeds. Follow NVIDIA’s NVIDIA App information for the current app and overlay details.
- Alternatively, use GPU-Z or MSI Afterburner. NVIDIA Support names GPU-Z as a monitoring option. MSI Afterburner can show temperature and other selected monitoring metrics in an on-screen display; MSI says Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server must both be running in the background for in-game monitoring.
- Reproduce the problem. Run the game or workload that triggers the concern and watch the temperature. If available, observe GPU clock and fan behavior alongside it. Afterburner can also monitor GPU and memory frequency, voltage, and GPU core temperature.
For MSI Afterburner, enable the metrics you want in its monitoring settings and turn on their on-screen display. MSI recommends downloading it from MSI or Guru3D to avoid impostor installers. Fan-curve controls are optional; record the card’s stock behavior first, and do not assume there is one recommended curve for every RTX 5090.
What temperature is too hot for an RTX 5090?
NVIDIA lists a 90 °C maximum GPU temperature for the RTX 5090 reference/Founders Edition design. This is an upper specification, not an ideal gaming temperature. NVIDIA notes that add-in-card specifications may vary, so look up the limit and support guidance for your exact board-partner model before judging its readings. The official sources cited here do not establish a universal RTX 5090 gaming temperature target or hotspot threshold. Treat a temperature as a symptom to investigate in context: workload, clock behavior, fan operation, and the model-specific specification all matter.
Why an RTX 5090 may throttle or shut down
NVIDIA Support explains that when an NVIDIA GPU reaches its maximum temperature, the driver reduces performance in an attempt to bring the temperature back below the maximum. If temperature continues to rise despite throttling, the GPU may shut down the system to protect the card. The support guidance is general to NVIDIA GPUs, not a 5090-specific thermal table; apply it alongside your card’s own specifications. A single temperature number does not identify the cause. Cooling, obstructed fans, and case airflow are practical checks, but persistent or abnormal behavior warrants help from the card maker or system builder rather than guesswork.

- Confirm the reading under load. Use an overlay or monitoring tool while reproducing the game or workload. Note temperature and, if available, GPU clock and fan behavior.
- Check the exact card specification. Compare the reading with the limit published by your card’s manufacturer. Do not assume the reference 90 °C maximum applies unchanged to every partner model.
- Inspect the visible cooling path. Check that GPU fans are not blocked and that the case has a clear path for intake and exhaust air. Make sure existing fans are operating.
- Improve case cooling if it is deficient. NVIDIA Support recommends improving system cooling, such as by adding a system fan. Add one only if the case has a compatible mounting position and airflow is actually inadequate; consider airflow direction and noise as well as fit.
- Stop if the problem persists or escalates. If temperature keeps rising, the computer shuts down, or the card behaves abnormally, stop the workload and contact the card manufacturer or system builder. Do not treat GPU disassembly, thermal-paste replacement, or power-limit changes as routine fixes.
RTX 5090 power requirements and system context
NVIDIA lists 575 W total graphics power and 1000 W required system power for the RTX 5090. The system-power figure is based on a configuration with a Ryzen 9 9950X, and NVIDIA says requirements can vary by system; it is not a universal PSU rule independent of the rest of the build. Check NVIDIA’s product specifications and your card maker’s requirements for your specific configuration.
