Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore you leave, check the official 511 or transportation department service for every region your route crosses. Review closures, incidents, construction, detours, traffic speeds, and alerts—not just congestion. These services vary by region, and conditions can change after you check, so confirm again before departure.
Find the official traffic source for your route
In the United States, look for the relevant region’s 511 service or transportation department road-conditions page. If your route crosses a state or provincial border, check each jurisdiction; one service may not cover the entire trip. Ontario 511 is one Canadian example. Regional services include Bay Area 511, SoCal511, Alaska 511, AZ 511, NJ 511, and NCDOT’s 511 service. Use the official Ontario 511 site for routes in Ontario.

Search for the route’s 511 service or transportation agency rather than assuming one national map covers every road. Check that the service includes the roads you plan to use: some systems focus on major highways, while local-road coverage and map features differ.

When the service lets you select a route, enter or choose it and inspect the following information along the way:
#1 Best Overall
- 6” high-resolution navigator includes map updates of North America
- Hands-free calling when paired with your compatible smartphone with BLUETOOTH technology and convenient Garmin voice assist lets you ask for directions to places you want to go
- Road trip–ready features include the HISTORY database of notable sites, a U.S. national parks directory, Tripadvisor traveler ratings and millions of Foursquare POIs
- Driver alerts for things such as school zones, sharp curves and speed changes help encourage safer driving and increase situational awareness
- Access live traffic, fuel prices, parking, weather and smart notifications when you pair this navigator with your compatible smartphone running the Garmin Drive app
- Closures and incidents: Look for blocked roads, crashes, and other reported disruptions.
- Construction and roadwork: Check for lane restrictions, work zones, and planned closures.
- Detours: Confirm whether the posted alternative route affects your intended roads or travel time.
- Traffic speeds and congestion: Use these to spot slowdowns, but do not treat a clear-looking traffic layer as proof that no closure exists.
- Alerts: Look for route-specific notices, weather information, or other warnings the regional service provides.
Available tools depend on the provider. Some services show cameras, message signs, or traffic lists that can be filtered by direction, time, county, location, and roadway. SoCal511, for example, describes lists with these filters and maps that include closures, incidents, cameras, and route information. A phone report by highway and direction may also be available.
How to check your route
- Identify every jurisdiction on the trip. Note the states, provinces, or regions your route crosses, including the destination area.
- Open each region’s official traveler-information service. Use its map, road-conditions page, app, or phone line, depending on what it offers.
- Select your route if possible. Follow the planned highways and connecting roads rather than checking only your starting point and destination.
- Review closures, incidents, work, detours, traffic, and route alerts. Use cameras or message-sign information as additional context when available.
- Check again before departure. Reports can change after your initial check; no single check guarantees conditions will remain the same throughout the trip.
Use navigation apps as a supplement
A navigation app or community report can provide another signal, especially for a developing incident. For official closure and roadwork information, also check the relevant transportation agency or regional 511 service. Do not assume every official service incorporates crowdsourced reports: Alaska 511 says Waze incidents and closures appear on its site in addition to information reported by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (AKDOT). That integration is specific to Alaska 511, not a feature to expect everywhere.

- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
Reports can come from different sources. For example, Bay Area 511 says its traffic incident information comes from the California Highway Patrol’s Computer Aided Dispatch system, while construction and event information draws on sources including Caltrans’ Lane Closure System. Data sources and coverage vary by region.

Check safely if you are already on the road
Do your map and route checks before setting off. If you need traffic information while travelling, use a voice service where available or pull over safely before looking at or interacting with your phone. Bay Area 511 advises drivers to call 511 for voice-activated information or pull over before checking a smartphone.

Choose a source that fits the trip
If more than one service covers part of your route, compare the details that matter for that journey:
- Whether the service is operated by or linked to the transportation authority for that area.
- Whether it covers the roads you will use, including local connections as well as major highways.
- Which kinds of information it provides: closures, construction, incidents, weather, and detours.
- Whether it offers route alerts, camera views, or phone access.
- Whether crowdsourced reports are identified separately from official reports.
There is no single feature set across regional 511 services. Check the local service’s coverage and available layers, and treat its information as a current report rather than a guarantee that every road issue is shown.
