Use a reference-matching tool to check whether each cited work exists and its metadata is correct; then open the source to see whether it supports the paper’s claim. AI detectors do a different job: they estimate whether text resembles generated language, and their scores are not proof of authorship or misconduct. A reliable review keeps these checks separate.
What each tool can—and cannot—tell you
| Check | What it can reveal | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Reference metadata lookup | Whether a scholarly record appears in a registry or specialist database, and whether fields such as title, author, year, and DOI match. | Whether the source supports the paper’s particular statement. |
| Reading the cited source | Whether the relevant passage, result, or conclusion supports the cited claim in context. | Whether the paper’s prose was written by a human or generated by AI. |
| Similarity checking | Text overlap with material in the service’s comparison corpus. | Whether overlapping text was AI-generated, or whether citations are accurate. |
| AI-text detection | A probabilistic signal that text resembles patterns associated with generated writing. | Definitive authorship, citation fabrication, or misconduct. |
A real DOI is not enough on its own: a reference can contain a valid identifier alongside an incorrect title, author, year, or venue. And a fully accurate reference list does not prove that the cited sources substantiate the paper’s claims.

How to verify citations, one reference at a time
- Start with Crossref for DOI-based scholarly references. Search by DOI, title, author, or a reference text query using Crossref metadata search and retrieval documentation. Compare the returned record with the paper’s reference rather than accepting a DOI match as sufficient.
- Compare every available field. Check title, author names, publication year, venue, and DOI. A mismatch may indicate a malformed citation even when the underlying work is real. For works identified by another kind of identifier, use a database suited to that identifier or discipline.
- Use Zotero to capture and normalize references. Zotero says its identifier-based metadata retrieval uses Crossref and other registries for DOIs, NCBI PubMed for PubMed IDs, arXiv for arXiv identifiers, and library/catalog sources for ISBNs. Its metadata retrieval documentation explains the process. Zotero is a reference manager, not a guarantee that a record is accurate or a claim is supported.
- Check publication status. Crossref points users to the Retraction Watch dataset for checking retractions and corrections. A record’s existence does not mean it remains reliable or unrevised.
- Open the cited work and inspect the relevant passage. Read enough surrounding context to establish whether the cited result or conclusion actually supports the sentence in the paper. Metadata matching alone cannot do this.
Similarity tools are not AI detectors
Crossref Similarity Check is powered by iThenticate/Turnitin and is offered to eligible Crossref members publishing content assigned DOIs. Crossref describes it as a similarity-checking service, not a way to verify AI authorship. Its Similarity Check information is relevant to eligible publishers; eligibility and fees are service-specific and may change.
A similarity score indicates overlap against a comparison corpus. It is not an answer to whether writing was generated by AI, and it does not verify that a reference supports the surrounding claim. Use it only for the kind of overlap review it is designed to assist with.
#1 Best Overall
Can AI detectors reliably tell if a paper was written by AI?
No detector score should be treated as conclusive evidence of authorship. The available studies show why results need context, and neither establishes a stable current ranking that identifies a best detector for every field.
What the 2023 evaluation found
Weber-Wulff and colleagues tested 12 publicly available tools and two commercial systems, including Turnitin and PlagiarismCheck. In that study’s test context, they concluded the tools were neither accurate nor reliable overall, and found that obfuscation significantly worsened performance. The authors wrote: “For GPT Zero, half of the positive classifications would be false accusations, which makes this tool unsuitable for the academic environment.” This is a result reported for the tools and conditions they tested in 2023, not a current evaluation of every detector version. What a narrower 2025 study found
A 2025 Acta Neurochirurgica study examined 1,000 academic texts: 250 human-authored articles published before ChatGPT and 750 texts generated using ChatGPT 3.5, 4, and 4o. It tested GPTZero, ZeroGPT, and Corrector and reported ROC AUC values from 0.75 to 1.00; none reached 100% reliability. At the study’s threshold above 50%, Corrector flagged 76 of the 250 human-authored articles (30.4%), and ZeroGPT flagged 40 (16%); GPTZero did not score an original article above 50%. Those figures describe this sample, these tools and models, and that threshold—not error rates for all academic writing. The authors recommend treating detectors as supplementary, not definitive. - Review the writing itself rather than treating a score as a verdict.
- Where appropriate, compare drafts or version history as part of a broader authorship review.
- Follow the relevant journal or institution policy.
- Check references directly: an AI-text score does not establish that citations are fabricated.
Why bibliography checks need field-level accuracy
A 2023 Scientific Reports study of ChatGPT-generated bibliographies found both fabricated references and substantive errors in citations that corresponded to real works. In that study, 43% of real (non-fabricated) GPT-3.5 citations, compared with 24% of real GPT-4 citations, contained substantive citation errors, according to the authors’ definition and test set. These results concern references generated in that study; they should not be generalized to current models or all AI-generated bibliographies. Read the study in Scientific Reports.

The practical implication is to verify both existence and accuracy: a real scholarly record can still be misrepresented by incorrect bibliographic fields, and even a perfectly matched record still needs to be read for claim support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a tool for the job
- For DOI and reference metadata: Crossref offers scholarly metadata search and retrieval. Check coverage for the work and field you are reviewing, and inspect the underlying record.
- For organizing and normalizing references: Zotero can retrieve metadata from identifier-specific registries and catalogs. Treat it as a library and reference-management aid, not an independent content audit.
- For text overlap: Similarity Check is a publisher-facing service for eligible Crossref members; it checks similarity, not AI authorship.
- For suspected AI-generated text: available studies do not establish a universal best detector or a stable current ranking. Consider what text types and models were evaluated, false-positive and false-negative behavior, treatment of edited or hybrid writing, and whether meaningful human review is available.
