How to Check RAM Type, Speed, and Capacity on Your Computer

Find installed or usable RAM and current memory use with built-in Windows, Mac, and Linux tools. Learn when module type and speed need firmware or model-specific verification.

Use your operating system’s built-in tools to check memory capacity and current use. To identify a module’s DDR type, speed, or slot details, you may need a firmware-reported hardware view—and should verify it against the exact computer or motherboard model before buying RAM.

Choose the right kind of memory check

“How much RAM is installed?” and “How much memory is available right now?” are different questions. A system overview can show installed or usable capacity; a live-use panel shows how memory is being used. Neither necessarily identifies each physical module.

Method Best for Module type and speed Important limitation
Windows system overview or systeminfo Basic system and RAM information Not established by the cited Microsoft documentation as a universal built-in check Do not assume a summary field identifies DDR generation.
macOS System Information Hardware details; model-specific memory and upgradeability information May show memory-slot details on supported models Some Macs do not have upgradeable memory or a Memory Slots pane.
macOS Activity Monitor Physical memory and live use Not necessarily a conventional module-speed or type field It is primarily a memory-usage view.
Linux free -h Usable, available, used, and swap summaries No module inventory Reports memory figures from /proc/meminfo.
Linux dmidecode Firmware-reported memory-device details Can expose module information when firmware supplies it SMBIOS data can be incomplete or unreliable.

Check RAM in Windows 10 or Windows 11

Get a quick system overview

Open Task Manager or Windows Settings for a quick view of memory capacity and use. Microsoft’s documentation does not establish that current Task Manager views universally identify RAM type or speed, so do not rely on them to confirm DDR4 versus DDR5.

Run the documented system-information commands

  1. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell.
  2. Enter systeminfo and press Enter. Microsoft documents this command as displaying detailed system configuration, including hardware properties such as RAM: Microsoft’s systeminfo documentation.
  3. For a broader report, press Win + R, enter msinfo32, and press Enter. System Information presents details about hardware, system components, and the software environment in Windows 10 and Windows 11: Microsoft’s msinfo32 documentation.

These reports are useful for system context, but the cited Microsoft pages do not validate one built-in method that reveals each module’s DDR type, frequency, part number, and slot across all PCs. When a tool or firmware screen does show those fields, treat them as reported information and compare it with the documentation for your precise computer model.

Check RAM on a Mac

Open System Information

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > About.
  2. Select System Report to open the detailed hardware report.

Apple also documents holding the Option key while opening the Apple menu, then choosing System Information. The report covers hardware installed or connected to the Mac. See Apple’s System Information User Guide.

See physical memory and live usage

  1. Open Activity Monitor.
  2. Select the Memory tab.

Apple’s Memory view includes Physical Memory, Memory Used, app memory, wired memory, compressed memory, cached files, swap used, and a Memory Pressure graph. These figures help explain current usage; they do not necessarily provide a removable DIMM’s speed or type.

Check whether memory is upgradeable

In System Information, choose Hardware > Memory and look for the Memory Slots pane’s Upgradeable Memory entry. Apple says that if the Memory Slots pane is absent, upgradeable memory is not available for that Mac. This is model-specific: do not infer that one Mac can be upgraded because another has a memory-slot report.

Check RAM on Linux

See usable and available memory

  1. Open a terminal.
  2. Run free -h for a human-readable summary of total, used, free, shared, buffers/cache, available, and swap values.

The free command parses /proc/meminfo. Its total is usable memory, excluding some reserved memory and kernel binary code; available estimates what can be used to start applications without swapping. These are system memory summaries, not a module-by-module inventory. See the free(1) manual and /proc/meminfo(5) manual.

  • Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
  • Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

Inspect firmware-reported module details

  1. In a terminal, run sudo dmidecode --type memory. The equivalent type number is 17: sudo dmidecode -t 17.
  2. Enter your administrator password if prompted, then review the output for memory-device fields reported by the system firmware.

dmidecode decodes DMI/SMBIOS tables into human-readable information. Its manual cautions that the data comes from firmware and may be unreliable. Missing or inconsistent values are not proof that the physical hardware is different; cross-check them against the firmware interface and the exact computer or motherboard maker’s documentation. See the dmidecode(8) manual.

Understand capacity, type, and speed

Capacity: installed is not the same as available

Installed physical RAM, usable memory, currently used memory, and available memory describe different things. Operating systems may reserve part of installed memory for hardware or system needs; shared graphics memory and reporting conventions can also affect the usable figure. On Linux, cached memory and swap appear in the summary as distinct values. A visible available-memory number is not the amount of RAM installed.

Type: confirm the actual module or system specification

If a report says DDR4 or DDR5, note whether it is a module detail supplied by firmware or a specification for the computer. If the type is missing or unclear, check the exact model’s documentation. A processor generation, a slot count, or a generic system label alone does not establish which RAM will work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Speed: distinguish the reported value from a rating

A memory specification or rated speed, a firmware-configured speed, and the speed at which memory is operating are not automatically interchangeable. Reporting fields and units vary, and the sources cited here do not establish one universal interpretation across platforms. Keep the field label and unit with any value you record, and use model-specific documentation before comparing it with a module’s rating.

Slots do not prove upgradeability

A reported slot count does not, by itself, show that memory is removable or that an apparently open slot can be used. Check the service guide or specifications for the precise model. On Macs, use Apple’s Upgradeable Memory entry when that pane is present.

Before you buy replacement or additional RAM

  • Identify the exact computer model—or, for a custom PC, the exact motherboard model.
  • Check its official specifications or service guide for supported memory type, capacity, form factor, and upgradeability.
  • Use a tool’s reported type, speed, part number, and slot data as clues, not a substitute for model compatibility information.
  • If a firmware-backed reading is missing or conflicts with the manufacturer’s specifications, verify in the firmware interface or with the maker’s documentation before purchasing.

A generic DDR generation or an apparent free slot is not enough to establish compatibility. The checking tools identify what the system reports; the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance is what to use to confirm an upgrade.
