To find out why images load slowly, inspect their requests in your browser’s developer tools and repeat the page load with network throttling. That shows how your page behaves under simulated slower conditions; it does not measure a visitor’s Wi-Fi coverage or mobile signal. To reduce unnecessary downloads, serve appropriately sized responsive images, lazy-load images below the fold, and keep the main visible image eager.
Check image requests in your browser
Open your browser’s developer tools, select the Network panel, filter for images, and reload the page. Inspect the requests while the page loads rather than relying on a single “network strength” score: there is no universal browser measurement that establishes how strong a visitor’s connection is.

- Record which image files are largest and when their requests begin.
- Check whether the main image visible on arrival competes with offscreen images for bandwidth or request priority.
- Use the Network panel’s throttling controls to test a slower simulated connection. Compare the same page and viewport under the same profile before and after making changes.
Throttling is a controlled test of page behavior, not a measurement of a user’s actual radio signal, Wi-Fi coverage, or connection speed. Google Chrome web.dev recommends inspecting resource priority in DevTools and validating changes with lab and field tools: Optimize LCP.
Send images sized for their display
A large image can transfer far more data than a phone-sized display needs. Provide alternate image widths with srcset, and use sizes to describe the rendered slot when using width descriptors. The browser can select a candidate based on the display context, pixel density, and network conditions. For example:

Adjust candidate widths and the sizes value to match your actual layout and image files. A desktop-sized image sent to a mobile device can use 2–4 times more data than needed, according to Google Chrome web.dev’s 2022 responsive-images article; the exact waste on any page depends on its assets and layout. See Serve responsive images.
Choose markup control or managed resizing
Authoring srcset candidates gives you direct control over the widths offered, but you need suitable image variants and markup. An image delivery service can generate widths dynamically instead. Cloudflare documents a width=auto option for selecting a width through its service, which may simplify implementation where markup cannot be changed: Cloudflare Images: Transform via URL. A managed service is optional; responsive candidates can be authored directly.

Load images at the right time
Use native loading="lazy" for images below the fold so the browser can defer fetching them until they are near the viewport. Do not apply lazy loading indiscriminately to the hero image or another image likely to be the page’s Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) element:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute<!-- An image below the fold -->
<img src="/images/related-story.jpg" loading="lazy" alt="...">
<!-- A main visible or likely LCP image: leave loading unset (eager by default) -->
<img src="/images/hero.jpg" alt="...">
Google Chrome web.dev’s guidance is direct: “Never lazy-load your LCP image, as that will always lead to unnecessary resource load delay, and will have a negative impact on LCP.” If testing shows the likely LCP image needs a hint, consider fetchpriority="high" on that image only. Raising one resource’s priority can lower the priority of others, so check the request waterfall and avoid marking many images high priority. See Optimize LCP.

| Image or scheduling choice | When it fits | Tradeoff to check |
|---|---|---|
| Default/eager loading | Main visible image or likely LCP image | It can compete with other early requests; confirm its start time and priority. |
loading="lazy" |
Images below the fold | Fewer initial requests and less initial transfer, but unsuitable for the main image the reader should see immediately. |
| Default scheduling | Most images without a demonstrated priority problem | Inspect the waterfall before changing browser scheduling. |
fetchpriority="high" |
A genuinely important likely LCP image when testing supports the hint | Higher priority for one request can affect competing requests; use sparingly. |
Lazy-loading behavior depends on browser heuristics. In experiments reported by Google Chrome web.dev, 97.5% of below-the-fold images lazy-loaded on 4G were fully loaded within 10 ms of becoming visible, compared with 92.6% in the article’s slow-2G experiments. These are results from the stated experiments, not guarantees for every browser, device, or present-day connection. The same guidance notes that thresholds vary by resource and effective connection type: Browser-level image lazy loading.
Validate the change rather than guessing
- Capture a baseline in the Network panel at a fixed viewport; note image sizes, request start times, and priorities.
- Make one change at a time, such as adding responsive candidates or lazy-loading below-the-fold images.
- Reload under the same throttled profile and compare the same requests. Confirm that the visible image starts promptly, offscreen images are deferred, and smaller viewports receive appropriately sized files.
- Check field performance data as well as lab tests when available. A simulated profile helps reproduce conditions; it does not establish how every real visitor’s device and network will behave.
Troubleshoot slow or missing images
- The hero image appears late: Check whether it has
loading="lazy". Remove lazy loading from a visible or likely LCP image, then inspect its request timing and priority. - Mobile still downloads a large file: Verify that the image has appropriate
srcsetcandidates and thatsizesreflects the rendered slot. Check the actual image request in the Network panel rather than assuming the browser selected a smaller candidate. - Many offscreen images load immediately: Check whether below-the-fold images use
loading="lazy". Keep images needed in the initial viewport eager. - An image remains slow after prioritization: Inspect whether many resources have been assigned high priority and whether the image is actually the LCP element. High priority is a hint with tradeoffs, not a substitute for right-sizing the file.
- Results differ across browsers: Lazy-load thresholds and scheduling heuristics can vary. Compare actual requests and user-visible behavior rather than relying on one fixed threshold.

For a screenshot of a page without setting up browser automation, ScreenshotNeo takes a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. Its API can help capture the page while you inspect how a change looks, but it does not replace Network-panel timing or a throttled performance test. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
