To check whether your network can support a 24/7 YouTube live stream, measure stable upload capacity from the computer and connection you will actually use, compare it with the encoder’s bitrate, and leave at least 20% spare capacity. Then run a representative test stream and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and your encoder’s dropped-frame count. A speed-test result is a snapshot, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
1. Work out how much upload capacity your stream needs
Start with the stream’s actual output settings: resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. Use YouTube’s live encoder settings, not its separate recommendations for uploading recorded videos. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (four seconds maximum), and RTMPS for encrypted delivery to its ingest system.

| H.264 live output | YouTube’s recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current live-encoder recommendations, accessed 2026-10-03. They describe the encoder’s video bitrate, not a broadband-plan speed that guarantees a stable stream. Recommendations vary by codec and settings; consult YouTube’s current table for your chosen codec, resolution and frame rate. Audio also uses bandwidth.

Target measured upload capacity ≈ (primary bitrate + simultaneously transmitted backup bitrate) × 1.20
For example, a 10 Mbps primary stream with a 10 Mbps backup sending at the same time calls for approximately 24 Mbps of available upload capacity under that calculation. This is a planning target, not a guarantee: other uploads, congestion, outages, Wi-Fi interference and changes in upstream capacity can still interrupt delivery. YouTube does not publish a universal latency, jitter or packet-loss threshold for uninterrupted 24/7 ingest.

2. Measure upload on the real streaming connection
- Use the encoder’s actual location and connection. Run an internet speed test from the computer and network that will send the stream. Focus on the upload result; download speed alone does not show whether you can sustain an outbound live feed.
- Check the result against the calculation. Available upload capacity should remain above the target while the stream is running, with other concurrent network activity included in the practical assessment.
- Repeat under realistic conditions. Test at more than one time of day and when typical household or workplace devices are using the network. YouTube notes that people sharing a connection can reduce the capacity available to an individual stream; it does not prescribe a fixed test schedule.
- Prefer a wired link for a computer encoder. YouTube recommends Ethernet, and OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable. If you need a cable, check its required length and whether the computer and router or switch have compatible Ethernet ports. A cable cannot increase your ISP’s upload capacity.
YouTube’s streaming tips say total streaming bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommend leaving 20% room. Do not treat one unusually good test result as proof that the connection will hold all day.
3. Run a representative test stream
A meaningful check exercises the whole delivery path: encoder, local network, ISP connection, YouTube ingest and playback. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, checking stream health and monitoring the live feed.

- 8 to 10 Users: This 4G router supports 8 to 10 users at a time, suitable for home, office and travel, etc.
- Configure the encoder for the intended resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate.
- Start a test using representative video and audio, rather than a static image if the actual stream contains movement.
- Check the encoder preview and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Confirm the feed is accessible on the channel or watch page and check playback on a mobile device as well.
- Monitor the test long enough to observe typical network use and verify any local recording workflow. This is a practical operating precaution, not a YouTube-specified duration or guarantee.
YouTube’s setup guidance advises checking stream access and monitoring audio and video during an event. For a 24/7 operation, continue monitoring after the test; conditions can change after a successful start.
4. Test backup failover, not just backup equipment
A spare encoder or second connection only improves resilience if the configured backup actually takes over. YouTube advises testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then confirming that playback rolls over to the backup. Verify that the primary and backup setup meets YouTube’s current configuration requirements and observe a successful switch rather than assuming it works.

5. Troubleshoot dropped frames and poor stream health
OBS defines dropped frames as an indication that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its troubleshooting guidance, dated 2024-09-30, lists possible causes including network instability, software interference, outdated network drivers and modem or router connectivity problems.

| Symptom | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder reports dropped frames | Whether stable available upload can sustain the configured bitrate; competing uploads; Wi-Fi stability | Lower the bitrate if necessary, use Ethernet where possible, and retest under typical network use. |
| Drops persist despite sufficient measured upload | VPNs or network-optimization tools, security software, network drivers, modem or router connectivity | Review OBS logs and test with suspected software interference removed or adjusted; check for driver and equipment connectivity issues. |
| Encoder preview looks healthy but YouTube reports a poor feed | Outbound internet performance and YouTube stream-health messages | Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting; if its connection test finds a problem, contact your ISP. |
| Primary feed fails and backup does not appear | Whether failover is configured correctly and whether the player switches when the primary is stopped | Repeat the controlled failover test and correct the backup setup before relying on it. |
The OBS guidance recommends wired networking for streaming and identifies VPNs and some network-optimization tools as possible sources of interference. Change one factor at a time where practical so you can tell which change affects the result.

Network availability is only one part of operating continuously. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive at all; streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. See its live-stream archive guidance.
YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If viewers need to pause or rewind, take this limitation into account when planning the format. Details are in YouTube’s DVR guidance.
