On a supported macOS version, open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery and read Battery Health. “Normal” means the battery is functioning normally; “Service Recommended” means it holds less charge than when new or is not functioning normally. For more context, check the Air’s cycle count in System Information and compare it with the limit for its exact model. Consider the macOS status, everyday runtime and charging behavior together—not a generic percentage or cycle count alone.
Check Battery Health in macOS
- On current macOS versions: Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, select Battery, then inspect Battery Health. Apple’s check battery condition guide explains the status labels.
- On older macOS versions: Look in System Preferences > Battery, if that control is available. If Battery Health is missing, Option-click the battery status menu in the menu bar; older systems may show labels such as “Replace Soon,” “Replace Now,” or “Service Battery.” Paths and labels vary by macOS version.
What the status means
- Normal: macOS reports that the battery is functioning normally.
- Service Recommended: The battery holds less charge than when new or is not functioning normally. This is a reason to consider service, particularly if reduced runtime affects your work; it is not an instruction to stop using the Mac immediately.
Apple says you can continue using the Mac before a battery with a service recommendation is checked without harming the computer. See Apple’s Service Recommended guidance.

Find the cycle count and the right model limit
- Hold down Option and open the Apple menu.
- Choose System Information.
- In the sidebar, select Hardware > Power, then find Cycle Count under Battery Information.
- Identify your exact MacBook Air model and compare its count with Apple’s model-specific cycle-count information.
A cycle represents use equal to the battery’s full capacity; it does not have to occur in one sitting or one charge. Apple’s cycle limit varies by Mac model, so there is no single count that applies to every MacBook Air. Apple recommends battery replacement for best performance once a model reaches its maximum cycle count, though the Mac can still be used and battery life may be reduced.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInterpret maximum capacity in context
Maximum capacity compares the battery’s current capacity with its capacity when new. Lower capacity can mean fewer hours between charges, but the figure by itself does not diagnose a fault or determine whether service is necessary.

Apple says a normal battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at its maximum cycle count when operating under normal conditions. That is a design expectation tied to the model’s maximum cycle count and normal conditions—not a universal replacement rule for every Air. Battery aging is also affected by temperature history and charging patterns. Apple’s battery health management explanation describes how management features can temporarily limit maximum charge; a temporarily lower full charge is not automatically evidence of battery failure.
Decide whether to monitor or arrange service
| What you observe | Proportionate next step |
|---|---|
| Normal status, acceptable runtime and no unusual charging or power behavior | Continue using the Mac and monitor it. A capacity below 100% alone does not establish that service is needed. |
| Service Recommended or a legacy replacement/service label | Consider arranging a battery assessment, especially if shorter runtime disrupts everyday use. You can keep using the Mac while deciding. |
| Cycle count at the exact model’s maximum | Consider replacement for best performance, as Apple recommends. Interpret the count alongside actual battery condition and runtime. |
| Charging trouble or unexpected power behavior | Check Apple’s version- and processor-specific troubleshooting guidance. A charge that pauses or is held may be related to Optimized Battery Charging; Apple’s guidance also includes Apple Diagnostics and, for some Intel models, SMC-reset steps. |
| Persistent issue, service status or runtime that is unacceptable to you | Ask Apple or a qualified service provider to assess the battery and provide a quote for your exact model and location. |
Third-party apps that estimate battery condition may not accurately or conclusively indicate how much system runtime has diminished. Use macOS’s condition information as the primary status reading, then weigh the battery’s actual effect on your normal use.

Choose a qualified service provider and check coverage
Apple says built-in Mac laptop batteries should be serviced by an Apple Store, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or an Independent Repair Provider using genuine Apple parts. Apple warns that untrained repairs or non-genuine parts could damage equipment and affect safety or functionality. When comparing service options, check provider qualifications, genuine-part use, coverage eligibility and a quote for your model and location.
Apple’s support guidance describes battery service for a defective battery under the one-year limited warranty and no-charge replacement under an AppleCare Protection Plan when the battery retains less than 80% of its original capacity. Out-of-warranty replacement is available for a fee. The linked service guidance is for the UK; confirm your own eligibility and current regional terms with Apple, since coverage and fees can vary.
