First, identify which number you need
RAM (random-access memory) is the device’s short-term working memory. Apps and files are loaded into RAM while they are being used; RAM is much faster than persistent storage, and its contents disappear when the device restarts or powers off. Storage is the long-term space that holds apps, photos, documents and the operating system.

“How much RAM do I have?” normally means installed RAM: the hardware capacity. That is different from current RAM use, which changes as apps open and close, and from storage capacity, such as 128 GB or 512 GB on a phone.

| What you are checking | Meaning | Where the cited guides expose it |
|---|---|---|
| Installed RAM | The device’s total physical memory capacity | Windows: Device specifications; macOS: Physical Memory |
| Current RAM use | Memory occupied at this moment by the system and apps | macOS Activity Monitor: Memory Used |
| Storage | Persistent space for apps and files | iPhone/iPad About and Storage screens; Android storage settings |
A storage figure cannot be substituted for an installed-RAM figure. A phone described as having 256 GB of capacity is describing storage, not memory. Keeping those terms separate prevents a common troubleshooting error: deleting files may free storage, but it does not increase the amount of physical RAM in the device.

Why the distinction matters
RAM is where the operating system and active applications keep the information they need immediately. When the device is turned off or restarted, that working information is lost; files saved to storage remain. Installed RAM therefore describes a hardware specification, while a usage reading describes what is happening at a particular moment.
If you are comparing two computers, documenting a machine for support, or checking a specification before installing software, record the installed amount. If an app is slow or the system is under pressure right now, a current-use or pressure indicator may be more relevant. If you cannot save a photo or install an app, check free storage instead.
Check installed RAM in Windows 10 or Windows 11
Microsoft uses the same Settings route for both Windows 10 and Windows 11. You do not need to install a diagnostic utility, buy an upgrade module, or open the computer just to read the installed amount.

- Select Settings.
- Open System.
- Select About.
- In Device specifications, find the entry for the amount of RAM installed. The label may appear as Installed RAM.
The number on this screen is the installed amount, not a live reading of how much memory applications are using right now. The same section also shows System type; that describes the Windows system architecture and should not be mistaken for the RAM figure.
How to read the Windows result
- A value expressed in GB, such as 8 GB or 16 GB, is the device’s installed RAM capacity.
- Do not interpret the storage size shown elsewhere in Windows as RAM.
- If you are checking a computer before troubleshooting, record the exact value and the Windows edition or version shown on the About page.
Write the result with its label—for example, “Installed RAM: 16 GB”—rather than copying only the number. This makes it clear later that you recorded hardware capacity, not free storage or current use.
If you cannot find the About page
Use the Start menu to open Settings, then choose System and scroll to About. On both supported Windows versions, the relevant information is grouped under Device specifications. If a managed work computer hides Settings pages, ask the administrator for the installed-memory specification rather than downloading an unapproved tool.
Menu wording can vary slightly with Windows updates, but the destination remains the System information area. Look specifically for the device-specification block and the installed-RAM label, not for a storage category.
Installed RAM versus Windows activity
The About page answers “How much physical RAM is installed?” It does not answer “How much is being used this second?” Those are separate questions. A computer can have a fixed installed capacity while the amount occupied by Windows and open apps changes continuously. If a support technician asks for the machine’s specification, provide the About-page value and identify it as installed RAM.

- Open the Activity Monitor app.
- Click the Memory tab.
- Look at the bottom of the window for Physical Memory.
Physical Memory is the amount of RAM installed. Apple defines it as: “The amount of RAM installed.” This is the number to report when someone asks how much RAM the Mac has.
Do not confuse the other Activity Monitor figures with installed RAM
- Memory Used is the amount currently being used by macOS and applications. It changes as workloads change.
- Swap Used is space on the startup disk used to move data to and from RAM. It is not additional physical RAM.
- Memory Pressure is a graph of how efficiently the system is meeting processing needs. It is not a capacity measurement.
For a hardware specification, copy the value beside Physical Memory. For a performance diagnosis, note Memory Used, Swap Used and the Memory Pressure graph separately; they answer different questions.

How to use the Mac readings correctly
Suppose Activity Monitor shows a changing Memory Used value and a nonzero Swap Used value. Those readings tell you about the current workload and disk-backed swapping; neither changes the installed Physical Memory figure. Record all three only when diagnosing current behavior, and label each one so that a live measurement is not mistaken for a hardware specification.
Activity Monitor is useful because it puts capacity and live diagnostics in one window, but the labels still matter. Physical Memory is the total installed RAM. Memory Used is occupancy now. Swap Used is startup-disk space being used to exchange data with RAM. Memory Pressure summarizes how efficiently memory is serving processing needs.
Check an iPhone or iPad without mistaking storage for RAM
The cited Apple user guides do not provide a built-in screen that reports an iPhone or iPad’s installed RAM. They document storage information instead, so the following steps are useful for checking capacity but do not reveal RAM.
View overall capacity and available storage
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- Read Capacity and Available.
These fields describe persistent storage. “Capacity” is the device’s total storage size, while “Available” is the storage currently free. Neither is the amount of RAM. A value such as 128 GB in Capacity should therefore be written as “storage capacity,” not “RAM.”
See storage used by each app
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap iPhone Storage on an iPhone, or the corresponding iPad Storage page on an iPad.
- Review the recommendations and the per-app storage list.
This page helps explain why a device is running out of space. It still does not identify installed RAM. If you need the RAM specification for a particular iPhone or iPad model, use Apple’s technical specifications for that exact model rather than treating a storage number as memory.
Why an iPhone storage screen cannot answer a RAM question
Apple’s About and device-storage pages are designed to report persistent capacity and free space. They do not label either value as RAM. The distinction is important when someone asks for “memory” informally: confirm whether they mean storage for photos and apps or RAM used by the operating system and active apps. For the latter, the cited user-facing settings do not provide an installed-RAM field.
If you are preparing a support report, include the exact iPhone or iPad model and the storage values separately. Do not infer RAM from 64 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB or any other Capacity value.

Check RAM on an Android phone
There is no single Android Settings path that is established for every manufacturer. Google’s general help explains how to check available storage and directs users to the phone manufacturer for device-specific information; it does not define a universal installed-RAM screen.
Use the exact model’s support instructions
- Open Settings and identify the phone’s exact model, usually from an About phone or similarly named page.
- Use the manufacturer’s support documentation for that model and Android version.
- Follow the manufacturer’s documented route for hardware or memory information, if one is provided.
Manufacturers can rename menus, move device-information pages and expose different details. A route that works on one brand or Android build may be absent on another. Do not assume that a page labeled Storage or a number expressed in GB is RAM.
What to do when Android shows only storage
If the manufacturer’s instructions show available storage but no installed-RAM field, that is not evidence that storage and RAM are the same. Record the model number and consult the manufacturer’s specifications or support page for that model. Avoid presenting a blanket instruction such as Settings > About phone > RAM as if it worked on every Android phone.
Why model and Android version matter
Two Android phones can use different menu names and expose different device details even when they run related software. A support answer that omits the exact model can send a reader to a screen that does not exist on their phone. Start by recording the model identifier, then use the documentation for that model rather than relying on a generic path copied from another device.
Google’s general instructions can help locate storage information, but storage availability is not a substitute for installed RAM. If the manufacturer does not expose RAM in Settings, the manufacturer’s specification page is the appropriate place to verify it.

These three measurements answer different troubleshooting questions.
| Question | Correct measurement | Example of an official label |
|---|---|---|
| How much memory is physically in the device? | Installed RAM | Windows: amount of RAM installed; Mac: Physical Memory |
| Why is the system busy right now? | Current RAM use and pressure | Mac: Memory Used, Swap Used and Memory Pressure |
| Why cannot I save another file or install an app? | Free persistent storage | iPhone/iPad: Available; Android: available storage |
On a Mac, a high Memory Used value does not mean the Mac has that much installed RAM; it is a live snapshot. Likewise, Swap Used tells you about disk-backed swapping, not a change in the physical-memory specification. On phones, the Capacity and Available fields are storage figures even when they appear beside other device details.
Examples of precise wording
- “This Windows laptop has 8 GB of installed RAM.”
- “Activity Monitor reports 16 GB of Physical Memory; Memory Used is a separate, changing value.”
- “The iPhone has 256 GB of storage capacity, and that number does not identify its RAM.”
- “The Android phone’s storage screen shows free space; the installed-RAM route must be checked for the exact model.”
This wording avoids ambiguity when a technician, buyer or family member uses “memory” to mean different things.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling storage “memory”
Phone interfaces and product listings sometimes use “memory” informally for storage. For a technically precise answer, reserve RAM for working memory and storage for persistent capacity. Recheck the label before recording a number.

Reporting a changing value as the hardware specification
Current use changes with open apps and system activity. When documenting a computer’s specification, use Windows’ installed-RAM entry or the Mac’s Physical Memory value, not a live usage reading.
Assuming every Android phone has the same menu
Android settings vary by manufacturer and model. If a general instruction does not match your screen, stop rather than guessing; identify the exact model and use its support documentation.
Reading the wrong Mac metric
Activity Monitor places several memory measurements together. Choose Physical Memory for installed RAM. Memory Used, Swap Used and Memory Pressure are useful for diagnosing current behavior but are not substitutes for capacity.
Installing an app when a built-in screen is enough
Windows and macOS already provide the documented tools needed to identify installed RAM. An additional monitoring or diagnostic app is not required for this task. On phones, an unfamiliar app can also report storage while appearing to answer a RAM question, so verify the label and prefer the manufacturer’s documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAssuming a larger storage number means more RAM
Storage and RAM can have entirely different capacities. A phone with more gigabytes of storage is not automatically a phone with more RAM. Check the field name and the device specification instead of comparing numbers alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What information to record for troubleshooting
When contacting support, write down the platform, exact device model, installed-RAM value if the platform exposes it, and any relevant storage or live-use reading with its label. For Windows, include the value under Device specifications. For macOS, include Physical Memory and, if the issue is performance-related, note Memory Used, Swap Used and Memory Pressure separately. For an iPhone, iPad or Android phone, distinguish storage Capacity or Available space from any model-specific RAM specification.
Taking a screenshot can preserve context, but a text note is often clearer if it includes the date and the exact label. Do not report only “16 GB” or “256 GB”; state whether it is installed RAM, current use or storage.
A quick checklist
- Windows 10/11: Right-click Start > Settings > System > About > Device specifications.
- Mac: Activity Monitor > Memory > Physical Memory.
- iPhone/iPad: Settings > General > About shows storage, not RAM; the device-storage page shows per-app storage use.
- Android: Find the exact model and follow that manufacturer’s instructions; there is no universal route supported for every phone.
- When writing down the result, label it explicitly as installed RAM, current memory use or storage.
- No purchase is necessary: the documented Windows and Mac paths use built-in tools, while phone checks require careful interpretation of the manufacturer’s information.
Frequently asked questions
Is 128 GB the same as 128 GB of RAM?
No. On an iPhone or iPad, a Capacity value such as 128 GB refers to persistent storage. RAM is the short-term working memory used while apps run. Always check the label and platform-specific specification.
Does “Available” on an iPhone show available RAM?
No. In Settings > General > About, Available describes free storage. Apple’s cited storage pages do not present it as available RAM.
Best Value
Which Mac Activity Monitor number is the RAM installed?
Read Physical Memory at the bottom of the Memory tab. Memory Used, Swap Used and Memory Pressure describe current operation, not installed capacity.
Can I use one Android RAM instruction for every phone?
No universal path is established in the cited Google guidance. Menus vary by manufacturer and model, so identify the exact phone and follow its manufacturer’s support instructions.
Do I need a RAM-checking app?
No for the documented Windows and Mac checks. Built-in Settings and Activity Monitor provide the relevant information. On phones, use the manufacturer’s documentation and avoid treating a storage utility as a RAM specification.
Why did my RAM number change after restarting?
The installed amount should not change merely because the device restarted. What changes is current use: RAM contents are cleared and applications load again. On a Mac, Memory Used and Swap Used can therefore differ from an earlier observation while Physical Memory remains the hardware capacity.
What should I tell a technician who asks how much RAM I have?
Give the installed value and its label, such as “Installed RAM: 16 GB” on Windows or “Physical Memory: 16 GB” on a Mac. If discussing a phone, state the model and distinguish any storage Capacity or Available figure from the RAM specification.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 128 GB the same as 128 GB of RAM?
No. A 128 GB Capacity value on an iPhone or iPad is persistent storage, not RAM.
Which Mac Activity Monitor number is installed RAM?
Read Physical Memory at the bottom of the Memory tab. Memory Used, Swap Used and Memory Pressure are current-operation metrics.
Can one Android RAM path work on every phone?
No. Android menus vary by manufacturer and model; use the exact device’s support documentation.
Do I need an app to check RAM?
No. Windows Settings and macOS Activity Monitor provide the documented computer checks, and phone storage screens should not be mistaken for RAM.
The Bottom Line
Use Windows’ Device specifications or a Mac’s Activity Monitor > Memory > Physical Memory to read installed RAM. On iPhone and iPad, Capacity and Available are storage figures, and Android requires model-specific manufacturer instructions.
