Check average FPS alongside 1% lows, GPU power limits, and how the laptop was tested. A GPU name or one synthetic score alone cannot tell you how a particular system will perform.
Start with the games and settings you actually want to use
Before comparing laptops, write down the games you play, your target resolution, and the graphics settings you expect to use. Note whether ray tracing or upscaling matters to you. A result at 1080p on a lower preset does not answer how the same laptop will perform at 1440p with ray tracing enabled.

Look for reviews that test your titles, or games with similar demands, and show results by resolution and quality preset. Notebookcheck’s laptop graphics table separates average FPS by settings; RTINGS’ game benchmark methodology explains how its results can help compare laptops for intended games. Results remain estimates: game optimization and workloads differ, and a title can stress the CPU or GPU in different ways.

Match the complete laptop configuration
The same GPU model name does not guarantee the same gaming performance in two laptops. Laptop manufacturers can configure a GPU to run at different power limits, and cooling and sustained behavior also affect what performance a system can maintain. Compare the exact GPU and CPU, GPU power or TGP when published, RAM configuration, and display resolution—not just the headline GPU label.

Notebookcheck’s 2023 analysis of RTX 4050 and RTX 4070 Laptop GPUs illustrates why power matters. In its Cyberpunk 2077 1.5 Ultra 1080p results, the RTX 4050 Laptop measured 43 FPS at 35 watts and 65 FPS at 100 watts; the RTX 4070 Laptop measured 53 FPS at 35 watts and 91 FPS at 100 watts. Those are results from that analysis, not predictions for every laptop or newer GPU generation. The analysis tested several power levels, including 35, 50, 65, 80, 100, and 115 watts. See Notebookcheck’s RTX laptop analysis for its test context.
Compare game results under matching conditions
For each candidate, compare results from several games at the same resolution and settings. One game is not enough: titles use hardware differently, and a laptop that leads in one workload may not lead in another. Record the test conditions next to each FPS figure so you do not accidentally compare unlike results.

- Game and version: Check that results are for the same title; note a version or benchmark scene if the reviewer provides it.
- Resolution and preset: Match both. Treat ray tracing and upscaling as separate settings that can change results.
- Average FPS: Useful for comparing overall throughput when the conditions match.
- 1% lows or frame-time consistency: These help reveal dips or stutters that an average can conceal. RTINGS explains that average FPS alone does not show those moments.
- Test setup: Note whether the laptop was plugged into its adapter, which power mode was used, and whether the reviewer repeated runs.
RTINGS’ published Windows laptop protocol uses each laptop’s own power adapter and repeats benchmarks. Its results therefore describe testing under those conditions, not expected gaming performance on battery. Its methodology also notes that 1% lows can help indicate stutters and dips.

There is no universal FPS line that makes every game enjoyable. Tom’s Guide uses 30 FPS as a playable threshold and 60 FPS as smooth in its 2026 testing guidance; those are editorial heuristics, not scientific guarantees. RTINGS generally treats 60 FPS as a smooth-play minimum but notes that slower games, such as Civilization VI, can be playable below it because they do not demand fast reactions. Your target depends on genre, settings, and preference.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use synthetic benchmarks as a cross-check
A synthetic benchmark such as 3DMark can help you compare systems with the same CPU and GPU pairing, but it is supporting evidence rather than a substitute for game tests. UL Benchmarks provides monitoring charts for temperatures, clocks, and frame rate. Its 3DMark information and game testing FAQ explain comparisons and the limits of game-FPS estimates. UL notes that a game’s performance is typically limited by either the CPU or GPU, so a score in one workload cannot reliably predict every title.

If a laptop’s synthetic score looks strong but its results in your games do not, give more weight to the relevant game benchmarks. Differences in CPU limits, optimization, power settings, and cooling can make a general score a poor stand-in for the experience you care about.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a used laptop, distinguish review results from its condition
A published review tells you how a reviewed sample performed; it does not establish the condition of an individual used laptop. If you can test the machine before purchase—or after purchase during a return period—UL says a stress test can help expose stability or cooling concerns. Crashes, hangs, visual artifacts, or an overheating shutdown during such a test are warning signs. Do not assume a seller will allow testing before sale.
Quick Recap
A practical comparison checklist
- List your games, target resolution, graphics preset, and whether ray tracing or upscaling is important.
- Find results for those games or comparable workloads, and record the resolution and settings beside each result.
- Match each laptop’s exact GPU and CPU, RAM configuration, and published GPU power limit or TGP.
- Compare average FPS across several games, then check 1% lows or frame-time information for signs of uneven performance.
- Confirm whether testing was plugged in, which power mode was used, and whether runs were repeated; do not treat plugged-in results as battery results.
- Use a synthetic benchmark only as a cross-check, and consider a permitted stability test for an individual used machine.
