To check for a PS5 system update, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then select Update System Software if an update is available. Keep the console powered on until installation finishes. You can confirm the installed version under Console Information.
How do I check for PS5 system updates?
- Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Select Update System Software. If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install it.
You can also enable automatic update options in the same system software settings area. To check what is installed, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. The system software version appears there; Sony says the status Up to date means the latest version is installed. See Sony’s instructions for checking the system software version. For the current release number and release notes, use Sony’s PS5 system software page rather than relying on a number that may become outdated.

How do I install a PS5 system update?
For a console that reaches the home screen and can connect to the internet, use the update menu above and follow its prompts. Before starting, avoid beginning an installation immediately before or after a power outage. Sony warns that interrupting installation can damage the console and says not to turn it off while the update is installing. Use only update data from Sony’s official support page and follow its documented method. Read Sony’s system software instructions and notices.
What should I do if my PS5 update is stuck?
- Press the PS button and open Downloads/Uploads from the control center.
- Highlight the system software update and choose View Error Info, then select Try Again.
- If downloads fail repeatedly, use Sony’s manual update method from a PC or Mac. If the console cannot reach the home screen, start with the Safe Mode method instead.
Sony’s Safe Mode guidance notes that a console that has been offline for a prolonged period or has experienced a failed update may need a manual update. See Sony’s Safe Mode update instructions.

How do I update my PS5 from USB?
The USB method is a fallback for repeated download problems or a console that cannot reach the home screen. You need a PC or Mac with internet access, a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and a DualSense controller connected by USB cable for Safe Mode navigation if needed. Sony’s current instructions specify approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the normal update file.
- On the USB drive, create a folder named PS5, then create a folder inside it named UPDATE.
- Download the official PS5 update file from Sony’s system software page and save it in the UPDATE folder with the exact filename PS5UPDATE.PUP.
- Turn off the PS5. Press and hold the power button, releasing it after the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK and follow the prompts.
If the console does not recognize the file, verify that the USB drive is FAT32 or exFAT and that the folder names and filename match exactly, including uppercase letters. Do not use unofficial firmware files or a procedure that Sony does not document.

Update or reinstall: choose carefully
A normal update and a system software reinstallation are different operations. Reinstallation is a recovery step, not the routine USB update described above: Sony warns that reinstalling deletes all data on the PS5 and describes it as a factory or hard reset. Before choosing reinstallation, read Sony’s reinstallation instructions and consult its backup guidance. The separate reinstallation file has its own requirements; its approximately 1.2 GB free-space figure is not the requirement for the normal update file.
