Start with Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates → Driver updates. Windows 11 installs many recommended drivers automatically, but optional drivers are not installed unless you choose them. There is no single Windows report that proves every driver is current: compare the installed provider, date, version and device model with Windows Update or the correct manufacturer catalog.
Check for driver updates in Windows Update
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Open Advanced options.
- Under Additional options, select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, select a driver and choose Download and install.
- Restart Windows when the installation finishes.
Microsoft says recommended hardware drivers can arrive through Windows Update, while optional driver updates require manual selection. If your build shows Receive updates for other Microsoft products under Advanced options, enable it for the broadest Microsoft update coverage. See Microsoft’s driver-update guidance.
An empty Optional updates page does not prove that every driver is current. Windows Update lists packages Microsoft has published and matched to your device; a newer package may exist only on the PC or component manufacturer’s site. Do not install every optional entry simply because it is available—identify the device and the reason for updating first.
What “outdated driver” actually means
A driver may be outdated because a newer compatible release exists, because an OEM has a device-specific package newer than Microsoft’s version, or because the installed release is incompatible with a recent Windows feature or application. A technically current driver can still be corrupted or malfunctioning.

- Generic fallback: Microsoft Basic Display Adapter is not the full graphics driver.
- Unsupported or unsigned package: Windows may flag it or refuse installation.
- Device error: Device Manager may show a warning icon, an unknown device or an error code.
- Old date without a problem: stable drivers are not updated on a fixed schedule, and the displayed date can represent package publication rather than component development.
Newest is not always best. Laptop makers often customize graphics, power, audio, camera, touchpad, hotkey, storage and chipset drivers. A newer generic Intel, AMD or NVIDIA package can remove features such as brightness control, sleep behavior, display switching or docking support.
Inspect installed driver details in Device Manager
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the hardware: Display adapters, Network adapters, Bluetooth, Sound, video and game controllers, Storage controllers, System devices, Cameras or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- On the Driver tab, record Driver Provider, Driver Date, Driver Version and, where shown, Digital Signer.
- Compare those values with the exact support page for your computer or component.
To let Windows try an update, right-click the device, choose Update driver and select Search automatically for drivers. “The best drivers for your device are already installed” means Windows did not find a better match through its search; it does not prove that no newer package exists elsewhere. Microsoft directs users to the hardware maker when Device Manager cannot find an appropriate driver (Device Manager instructions).
Warning signs worth investigating
- Yellow warning icon, an Unknown device or a device under Other devices.
- Error text or a code in Properties → General → Device status.
- A device disappearing after an update.
- Repeated display resets, crashes, audio failures, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth dropouts.
- A very old package on hardware that is still actively supported—but only after checking the vendor’s release notes.
Use your PC manufacturer’s validated drivers
For a laptop or branded desktop, search the manufacturer’s support site with the exact model or serial number before installing a generic package. Prioritize OEM releases for chipset and platform components, BIOS/UEFI, power management, touchpad and hotkeys, audio, card readers, cameras, storage controllers, Thunderbolt, USB4 and docking hardware.
| Manufacturer | Official support route | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Dell | SupportAssist and support home | Dell model detection, drivers and support workflows |
| Lenovo | Lenovo System Update | Lenovo drivers, BIOS and applications |
| HP | HP software and driver support | HP product-specific packages and support tools |
Availability and features of these utilities vary by model and region. An OEM package may be older than a component vendor’s release but better tested for that particular machine.

Update graphics drivers without breaking laptop features
For a desktop graphics card, use the official selector for the exact GPU and Windows 11 driver branch:
- NVIDIA driver downloads for GeForce, RTX, Quadro and related products.
- AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and its Auto-Detect tool for supported Radeon hardware. AMD’s cited documentation covers Windows 11 version 21H2 and later for supported systems; requirements can change by product and release.
- Intel Driver & Support Assistant, a free utility that detects many Intel products. Intel says it does not cover every Intel product or every Download Center driver (coverage details).
On a switchable-graphics laptop, check the laptop maker first. Choose the gaming/consumer, Studio or enterprise branch only when it matches your workload and product. Do not update solely because a version number is higher.
Windows Update can replace a manually installed graphics package with another version. Intel documents this reversion scenario and recommends installing the latest compatible Intel graphics driver over the Windows Update version rather than immediately deleting drivers (Intel’s guidance).

This reports installed signed-driver information; it is not an automatic outdated-driver detector. Compare each relevant result with a current OEM or component catalog. For driver-store administration, an elevated Command Prompt can list packages with:
pnputil /enum-drivers
Microsoft documents PnPUtil and package removal. Removing a package is potentially disruptive:
pnputil /delete-driver <Published Name> /uninstall
Create a restore point, record the published name and keep a working replacement before using that command. Removing the only compatible network or storage package can leave the device unusable (Microsoft driver-package documentation).
Recover when an update causes trouble
Roll back the previous package
- Open Device Manager, right-click the affected device and choose Properties.
- Open Driver and select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Choose a reason, confirm and restart.
Rollback is unavailable when Windows has no previous package retained. Intel’s graphics instructions also note that generic guidance may not apply to newer DCH installation methods; use the installer and procedure for your product (Intel rollback guidance).

Reinstall a corrupt driver
- Download the correct replacement first and create a restore point.
- If Windows keeps replacing it during troubleshooting, temporarily disconnect from the internet.
- In Device Manager, choose Uninstall device. Select Delete the driver software for this device only when a replacement is ready.
- Restart, then install the manufacturer’s package.
Windows may rediscover and reinstall a removed device after reboot. Permanent driver-store removal requires careful PnPUtil use. If an update produces a black screen or prevents normal startup, try Windows Recovery Environment or Safe Mode, roll back or reinstall, and use System Restore if a restore point exists. Do not remove a working network driver unless you already have an offline installer or another way to get online.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you use a third-party driver updater?
Usually no. Windows Update, the PC maker’s support page, Device Manager and the official Intel, AMD and NVIDIA tools cover the legitimate needs of most Windows 11 users. Broad third-party scanners can recommend unnecessary, incorrect or poorly matched packages, and their current safety, privacy and pricing vary by product. A warning that dozens of drivers are “old” is not, by itself, a reason to install them.
When should you check drivers?
Check after a major Windows upgrade, when installing hardware, when Windows reports a device problem, when a game or application requires a particular graphics version, or when a vendor release addresses your symptom, security issue or compatibility problem. There is no reliable weekly or monthly requirement. If the computer is stable, an old-looking date alone is not a maintenance emergency.
Drivers, BIOS and firmware are different
BIOS/UEFI, SSD firmware, dock firmware and device firmware are higher-risk updates, not ordinary Windows driver updates. Use the exact model-specific package, connect AC power and never interrupt the process. Follow the OEM’s instructions and create recovery media when the vendor recommends it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Windows 11 update drivers automatically?
It automatically obtains many recommended drivers through Windows Update, but optional driver updates are manual and manufacturer catalogs are not fully represented in Windows Update.
Why is Optional updates missing?
There may be no matching optional package, the driver may be available only from the OEM or component maker, or an organization policy or Windows build may hide the page.
Is Device Manager a complete driver checker?
No. It can inspect, search, reinstall and sometimes roll back a device, but its “best driver already installed” result is not a comparison with every manufacturer release.
Should I update chipset drivers or BIOS?
Use the computer manufacturer’s model-specific packages when a fix, security update or compatibility reason exists. BIOS and firmware require more caution than ordinary driver installations.
