To check for a SHIELD TV system update, open Settings > Device Preferences > About > System upgrade. From there, follow the on-screen prompt if an update is available, or enable Auto-upgrade to let the device download and install upgrades automatically.
Check for and install an update manually
- From the SHIELD TV home screen, open Settings.
- Select Device Preferences > About > System upgrade.
- On the System upgrade page, follow the on-screen prompt if an update is available, then allow the device to download and install it.
This is the manual route documented in NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV User Guide. If your menus use different wording, look in the device’s About or System upgrade settings; labels can vary by software version.

Install from an update notification
If an update notification appears on the home screen, select Details. NVIDIA says SHIELD TV will then download and apply the update. Updates are pushed directly to SHIELD TV, but NVIDIA’s guide does not specify a release schedule, so availability may not be simultaneous across devices.
Set SHIELD TV to upgrade automatically
Open Settings > Device Preferences > About > System upgrade, turn on Auto-upgrade, and choose a time for SHIELD to apply the upgrade. This is useful if you prefer not to start each update manually; the setting is described in NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV User Guide.

If a system update fails
NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guide documents a possible cause as a corrupted downloaded update image. Its recovery option is to delete local update data in the OTA folder, reboot SHIELD TV, then retry the download and installation. The guide is an older support document, so treat this as a documented troubleshooting option rather than a universal fix. If the update still fails, contact NVIDIA SHIELD support for guidance appropriate to your software version.
SHIELD system updates and remote updates are different
A system upgrade updates SHIELD TV itself. A remote or controller can also receive its own software update; NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guidance notes that an accessory may need sufficient charge to complete that separate update. Accessory firmware is not installed from the TV’s System upgrade control.

The cited NVIDIA guides explain how to check for and install updates but do not establish the current latest SHIELD TV software version or a release date. Check the System upgrade page on your device for update availability rather than relying on an unspecified version number.
