How to Check Cron Logs and Find Why a Job Failed

Learn where cron logs go, how to confirm whether a job launched, and what to check when its command fails or no log entry appears.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by checking where your Linux distribution routes cron messages, then determine whether the scheduler recorded the job launch. On current Ubuntu and Debian defaults, check /var/log/syslog; on other systems, cron records may be in the systemd journal or another syslog destination. If cron logged an invocation, investigate the command’s output, environment, paths, permissions, and schedule. If no record appears, verify the crontab and logging pipeline before concluding the job never ran.

Find the right cron log for your system

There is no universal cron log filename. Ubuntu Community Help Wiki says current Ubuntu and Debian defaults send crontab edits and job runs to /var/log/syslog. Debian’s cron(8) manual says cron uses the syslog facility named cron; the host’s syslog rules determine which file, if any, receives that facility. A systemd journal may be the useful destination instead.

First identify the distribution and release, the installed cron implementation, and the logging stack. Do not assume another release’s file path or service-unit name applies. The commands below are examples; adjust the unit name and log destination to match the host.

sudo grep -i cron /var/log/syslog
sudo journalctl -u cron --since "today"

Search around the expected run time and, where possible, for the job or account name. Debian’s cron manual describes messages sent to syslog; Debian’s separate systemd-cron package documents journal-backed job output. On systems where the unit is not named cron, use the local service or journal identifier instead.

A missing entry in one file does not prove that cron did not run the job. The cron facility may be routed elsewhere, the journal may be the active destination, or the logging daemon may not be writing expected files. A Red Hat Customer Portal support case documents an rsyslog failure on RHEL 7 that prevented /var/log/cron and other standard files from being populated; that example is specific to RHEL 7, but illustrates why log routing belongs in the diagnosis.

Check that the job is installed for the intended account

User crontab

Run this as the account that owns the job:

crontab -l

A user crontab has no username field: the command runs as that crontab’s owner. Use the crontab command to manage it rather than editing the spool file directly.

System crontab or /etc/cron.d entry

Inspect the relevant /etc/crontab or file under /etc/cron.d/. Unlike a user crontab, a system crontab line includes the run-as username after the schedule fields. A line put in the wrong file type can therefore have fields in the wrong positions. Debian’s cron documentation also specifies ownership, write-permission, and filename requirements for /etc/cron.d entries; check the documentation for the cron package installed on the host.

  • Local Data Logging & No Subscription Fees: Unlike cloud-dependent devices, the server room temperature monitor stores up to 100,000 records locally with a customizable sampling interval as low as 2 minutes. Historical logs can be exported in CSV format for compliance, audits, or trend analysis. Data stays secure on-site — no monthly fees, no forced cloud account, and no risk of lost records during network downtime.

For either type, confirm that the entry is still present, the schedule fields mean the intended time, and the selected account can execute the command and access the files it needs.

Decide whether cron failed to launch the job or the command failed

A scheduler record and command output answer different questions. A record of an invocation indicates cron attempted to launch the command; it does not establish that the work completed successfully. Captured standard output and error, mail, or journal output can show what the command reported.

If no scheduler entry appears

  • Check whether the job is in the expected user or system crontab and whether its syntax matches that file type.
  • Verify the account, schedule fields, and whether the cron daemon is running under the service name used by this system.
  • Check the server’s clock and timezone against the intended run time.
  • Confirm that the log destination you searched receives cron messages, and check the journal and logging-daemon configuration if it does not.

If cron recorded an invocation

Move on to the command’s output and execution context rather than repeatedly changing the schedule. Debian’s cron manual describes configurable logging for starts, ends, and failed exit statuses, and says errors are logged regardless of the configured log level. Availability and configuration of those details depend on the implementation.

Capture the command’s output

Traditional cron sends command output by mail to the crontab owner, or to the recipient configured with MAILTO. This is useful only if the machine has a working mail route and someone checks the mailbox.

For a temporary diagnostic, redirect both standard output and standard error to a writable file:

* * * * * /absolute/path/to/script >> /absolute/path/to/cron-job.log 2>&1

Choose a location the job’s account can write to, avoid recording secrets, and arrange to rotate or otherwise manage the file so it does not grow indefinitely. Remove or adjust the temporary schedule and logging once you have enough information.

Debian’s systemd-cron package has implementation-specific behavior: its documentation says failure mail can include systemctl status and the full journal log for the run, and documents CRON_MAIL_SUCCESS and CRON_MAIL_FORMAT. Do not assume those settings apply to traditional cron.

Check paths, environment, syntax, and permissions

Cron’s environment can be smaller than the one provided by an interactive shell. Ubuntu’s cron guidance specifically warns that an unexpected PATH can prevent cron from locating a program. Use absolute paths for executables and files, and set required environment variables in the crontab or script.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm the script’s interpreter line, executable permission, and ownership.
  • Use absolute paths and check the job account’s read, write, and execute access to every needed file and directory.
  • Set any required environment variables explicitly; do not rely on shell startup files or an interactive working directory.
  • Review quoting, redirection, and shell-specific syntax. In cron commands, an unescaped % is a newline delimiter; use % when a literal percent sign is needed.

These checks apply after a launch record points toward a command-level problem, or when captured output indicates that a program or file could not be found or accessed.

Verify clock, timezone, and schedule behavior

Compare the server clock and timezone with the schedule’s intended meaning. Debian cron uses /etc/localtime for its timezone and documents behavior around clock changes smaller than three hours, including daylight-saving transitions: after a forward change, some fixed-time jobs in the skipped interval may run soon afterward; after a backward change, jobs in the repeated interval are not run a second time. This behavior is specific to the documented cron implementation and should not be assumed for every scheduler.

If the system uses Debian’s systemd-cron, entries may be translated into systemd units. Its documentation gives systemctl cat cron-<userid>-* as a way to inspect generated units. Use that diagnostic only when this implementation is installed.

Choose the next check based on what you found

Finding Next checks
No scheduler entry found Verify crontab placement and syntax, account, daemon, schedule, and timezone; then confirm the logging pipeline writes cron messages to the location being searched.
Scheduler entry found Inspect stdout/stderr, mail, or journal output; then check executable and file paths, environment, permissions, working directory, and application-specific errors.

The location of logs and the details recorded vary by distribution, cron implementation, and logging configuration. Ubuntu’s guidance, Debian’s cron manual, Debian’s systemd-cron manual, and the RHEL 7 rsyslog case describe the systems they cover—not every Linux distribution, Unix cron variant, container, or cloud scheduler.
