How to Check Battery Level and Care for a Portable Bose Bluetooth Speaker

Bose battery-check buttons, voice prompts, and light colors vary by SoundLink model. Find the right instructions for the Flex (2nd Gen), Micro, or Revolve, plus charging, storage, and troubleshooting guidance.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by identifying the exact Bose SoundLink model and generation: battery-check buttons, voice prompts, and indicator colors vary. For example, the SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) announces its charge level, while a SoundLink Revolve uses a different light-color scheme. Use the instructions for your model rather than treating any one Bose light chart as universal.

Identify your speaker before checking its battery

Look for the model name and generation on the speaker, its packaging, or its owner’s guide. The examples below cover the SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen), the original SoundLink Micro, SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen), and SoundLink Revolve. They are not instructions for every portable Bose speaker. If your model is not listed, consult its own owner’s guide or Bose support page before interpreting a light or pressing a button.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Also note whether the speaker is running on its battery, connected to a charger, or displaying a battery-check result. A light can indicate a different state during charging than it does when you check remaining charge.

Checking the model first is especially important if you are comparing a speaker with a similar-looking model or an earlier generation. For example, the original SoundLink Micro and Micro (2nd Gen) have different troubleshooting details in Bose’s guidance. A color or button action described for one should not be carried over to the other without checking its manual.

Check battery level on these SoundLink models

Model How to check Battery indication
SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) When you power it on, a voice prompt announces the battery level. You can also press and hold the Power button until you hear a voice prompt. During use, a prompt announces when charging is needed. When checking battery status, solid white means full charge, solid amber means low charge, and blinking amber means charging is needed. Slowly pulsing white means the speaker is charging.
Original SoundLink Micro Briefly press and hold the Power button to check the charge. Bose says this action checks the battery and does not turn the speaker on or off. Use the indicator guidance for this model in its Bose instructions; do not apply the Flex or Revolve colors to it.
SoundLink Revolve Use the speaker’s battery-check information and interpret the indicator in that context. While checking charge, green means medium-to-full, amber means low-to-medium, and red means low battery or charge needed. While charging, flashing amber means charging and green means charging is complete.

The Flex (2nd Gen) light chart and voice-prompt instructions come from Bose’s support information and 2025 owner’s guide. The original Micro button behavior is from Bose’s troubleshooting guidance. Revolve battery-check and charging states are described separately in Bose’s Revolve support information. Indicator patterns are model-specific; if a light does not match the applicable instructions, confirm the model before deciding that the battery has failed.

What the Flex (2nd Gen) voice prompts and lights tell you

On the Flex (2nd Gen), the startup prompt gives you a battery-level check without having to infer charge from a color. Bose also says that, while the speaker is in use, a voice prompt tells you when it needs charging. If you want to hear the level at another time, press and hold Power until the voice prompt plays. This is the instruction for this generation; do not assume the same button action works on every SoundLink speaker.

The light chart adds more detail than a simple full-or-empty reading. Solid white means full, solid amber means low, blinking amber means it needs charging, and slowly pulsing white means it is charging. Bose also lists repeated white blinks as a software update, alternating white and amber blinks as an error, and repeated three amber blinks as a failed battery. These patterns are not interchangeable: in particular, repeated white blinks are identified as an update, not a low-battery warning. If the chart shows an error or failed-battery pattern, follow Bose’s direction to contact customer service.

If the battery has depleted to 0%, the Flex (2nd Gen) enters battery protection mode. Bose’s guide says to reconnect the speaker to power and press Power to reactivate it. This is a specific recovery instruction for that model, not a reason to try button combinations on other Bose speakers.

Read charging lights separately from battery-check lights

Do not assume that a color means the same thing in every situation. On the SoundLink Revolve, for example, green during a battery check indicates medium-to-full remaining charge, while green when charging indicates that charging is complete. Flashing amber on that model indicates charging; amber during a battery check indicates low-to-medium remaining charge.

The Flex (2nd Gen) also distinguishes charging from other states: slowly pulsing white means charging, while solid white means full and solid or blinking amber signals a low-charge condition. When the speaker is plugged in, first compare the pattern with the charging section of the correct model’s instructions rather than reading it as a battery-check result.

A useful way to interpret an unexpected light is to ask three questions: Which exact model and generation is this? Is the speaker currently connected to power? Am I looking at a charging indicator, a battery-check result, or another status such as an update or error? Answering those questions before reacting can prevent a normal charging or update pattern from being mistaken for battery failure.

Care for and store the battery

Store the Flex (2nd Gen) in a cool place

Bose’s 2025 SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) owner’s guide says, “When not in use, store the speaker in a cool place.” It cautions against storing that model for extended periods either fully charged or with less than 10% remaining charge. These are model-specific storage instructions, not a universal storage rule established for every portable Bose speaker.

The practical point is to avoid treating long-term storage as the same thing as everyday use. Bose does not give a single ideal storage percentage in the quoted caution; it identifies the two conditions to avoid for extended periods: fully charged and below 10%. If you own another model, check its own storage guidance rather than applying the Flex instruction automatically.

Let wet or temperature-stressed speakers return to safe conditions

For the SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen), Bose says not to charge the speaker while it is wet. If it has been exposed to liquid, let it dry thoroughly before connecting a charger. If it has been in extreme heat or cold, wait until it reaches room temperature before charging.

These precautions matter before plugging in, even if the speaker otherwise appears to operate. The cited guidance concerns the Micro (2nd Gen); for another speaker, use that model’s own instructions for liquid exposure and temperature limits. Do not interpret this as permission to charge another model while damp.

Do not assume a fixed runtime

Battery life changes with listening volume, audio content, temperature, power-supply capability, and other use conditions. Bose’s published figures for the Flex (2nd Gen) are manufacturer test results, not a promise that every speaker will reach those times:

  • Up to 12 hours of playback: Bose tested using Bluetooth A2DP, 50% volume, default EQ, and a specified music mix. The test used production-representative speakers at 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C).
  • Up to 3 hours at maximum volume: Bose tested using Bluetooth A2DP at 100% volume and default EQ. Bose cautions that actual results vary with conditions; the same stated test temperature range was 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C).

Those playback figures apply to the Flex (2nd Gen), not to the Bose speaker range as a whole. The difference between the 50% and 100% volume test results is a reminder that listening level can significantly affect runtime. If your usage differs from the test—because you listen louder, use different material, or operate in a different environment—the comparison will not be exact.

For battery expectations, compare like with like: model, volume, EQ, connection and listening conditions. A shorter session than Bose’s “up to” figure does not on its own establish that the battery has failed. Bose presents the number as a test result and notes that user conditions and environmental temperature affect performance.

Charge the speaker with model-appropriate equipment

Flex (2nd Gen): charging time depends on the power supply and state

Bose’s 2025 owner’s guide says the Flex (2nd Gen) can take up to 4 hours to charge fully when using a 5 V/1.5 A (7.5 W) USB-A power supply, charging from 0% to 100% while in standby. The guide says charging time varies when the recommended supply is not used. This is not a general charging-time estimate for other Bose models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The conditions are part of the specification: the figure describes a charge from empty to full while the speaker is in standby, with the stated USB-A supply. A different power supply or charging state can change the time. If your charge takes longer, check the instructions and equipment for your exact model before concluding that the battery or speaker is defective.

Original Micro: check the charger rating and cable

For charging trouble with the original SoundLink Micro, Bose recommends checking the charger’s current rating against the product’s own specifications. An undersized charger may charge slowly or not at all. Bose also suggests trying another USB cable or charger when appropriate, checking the outlet, and using a safety-agency-approved power supply that meets local requirements.

Work through those checks separately. Confirm that the outlet is supplying power, inspect whether the cable or charger is the part causing the problem by trying another suitable one, and compare the charger rating with the Micro’s specifications. A charger that is too small may produce slow charging or no charging; simply waiting longer will not necessarily resolve an inadequate supply.

Do not apply one wattage, charger rating, or cable recommendation to every portable Bose speaker. Requirements and charging behavior can differ by model. If you need an accessory for a Revolve, Bose support lists power supplies and a charging cradle among model accessories; confirm compatibility and current availability for your exact model before choosing one.

Troubleshoot an unexpected battery reading or short runtime

The battery indicator seems inaccurate

  1. Confirm the precise model and generation, then consult that model’s battery and charging indicator instructions.
  2. Check whether the speaker is unplugged, charging, or displaying a battery-check result. Some models use different indications for those states.
  3. For a SoundLink Revolve+ II that has been unused for a period, Bose notes that the battery light may not accurately show the remaining charge. Bose recommends using the speaker until the low-battery light appears and then recharging it fully to address an inaccurate indication.

The Revolve+ II guidance is specific to that model; it should not be treated as a calibration procedure for every SoundLink speaker. In particular, do not deliberately run other models down as a general battery-care routine based on this one troubleshooting note.

The battery does not seem to last long

For a SoundLink Revolve+ II, Bose recommends confirming that the speaker is fully charged and turning it off when it is not in use. For other models, check that model’s troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming the same remedy or interpreting its lights using the Revolve+ II instructions.

When judging Flex (2nd Gen) runtime, compare your use with Bose’s test conditions: the published figures use different volume settings and specific audio conditions. A loud listening level, different music, or a different environment can produce a shorter result without showing that the battery has failed.

It can help to distinguish two issues: an indicator that seems inaccurate and a speaker that actually runs for less time than expected. Bose’s Revolve+ II procedure addresses an inaccurate battery-light reading after a period unused. Runtime comparisons for the Flex (2nd Gen), by contrast, depend on the test conditions such as volume and temperature. Use the applicable path for the symptom instead of applying one battery fix to every model.

The speaker will not charge

  • On the original SoundLink Micro, compare the power supply’s current rating with the model’s specifications, and check the outlet and USB cable.
  • If the speaker is a SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen), make sure it is thoroughly dry and has returned to room temperature after liquid exposure or extreme heat or cold.
  • Use only a charger and cable appropriate for the exact model. Bose’s original Micro troubleshooting advises a safety-agency-approved supply that meets local requirements.

If you are considering a different cable or power supply, confirm it matches the model’s requirements first. Bose’s recommendation to check current rating and try another cable or charger is for the original Micro, not a universal prescription for every Bose speaker. A product accessory listing may also change, so verify compatibility and availability for the exact Revolve model before buying a power supply or charging cradle.

A failed-battery light pattern appears

On the SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen), repeated three amber blinks indicate a failed battery. Bose’s support chart also identifies alternating white and amber blinks as an error. On SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen), a repeated three-amber-blink pattern indicates a failed battery. Bose directs owners seeing the cited failed-battery states to customer service. Do not disassemble the speaker or assume an unverified replacement battery is suitable.

The Flex (2nd Gen) chart also identifies repeated white blinks as a software update. That pattern is distinct from its repeated three amber blinks for a failed battery; follow the correct model’s instructions if an update pattern appears. If you cannot tell which pattern you are seeing, recheck the model and the chart before contacting support, and describe the actual blink sequence.

When model-specific guidance matters most

There is no single button sequence or color chart that reliably checks the battery on every portable Bose Bluetooth speaker. The Flex (2nd Gen) uses startup and button-activated voice prompts; the original Micro’s brief Power-button hold checks charge without turning the speaker on or off; and the Revolve describes different colors for checking charge and for charging. Use the matching model and generation when checking a reading, selecting charging equipment, storing the speaker, or deciding whether a warning pattern requires service.

For a quick decision, match the question to the model-specific instruction: use the Flex’s voice prompt or light chart for its battery level; use the original Micro’s brief Power hold and charging checks for that model; and separate the Revolve’s battery-check colors from its charging colors. For Micro (2nd Gen), keep the speaker dry and at room temperature before charging, and treat its repeated three-amber-blink failed-battery signal as a customer-service matter. When guidance points to service, do not open the speaker or fit a battery that has not been verified for that model.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check the battery on a SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen)?

When you power it on, the speaker announces the battery level. You can also press and hold Power until you hear a voice prompt. During use, it announces when it needs charging. Its light chart uses solid white for full, solid amber for low, and blinking amber when charging is needed.

Does holding Power turn the original SoundLink Micro on or off?

Bose says a brief press and hold on the original SoundLink Micro checks the battery charge and does not turn the speaker on or off. Do not assume this action applies to other models or generations.

What do the SoundLink Revolve battery lights mean?

When checking remaining charge, green means medium-to-full, amber means low-to-medium, and red means low battery or charge needed. While charging, flashing amber means charging and green means charging is complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does the SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) take to charge?

Bose lists up to 4 hours from 0% to 100% while in standby with a 5 V/1.5 A (7.5 W) USB-A power supply. Charging time varies if those conditions or the recommended supply differ.

How long should a SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) battery last?

Bose reports up to 12 hours using Bluetooth A2DP at 50% volume, default EQ, and a specified music mix, and up to 3 hours at 100% volume with default EQ. These are test results, not guarantees; content, loudness, temperature, and use conditions affect actual runtime.

Can I charge a SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen) when it is wet or very cold?

No. Bose says to let it dry thoroughly after liquid exposure and not to charge it while wet. If it has been in extreme heat or cold, wait until it reaches room temperature before charging.

What should I do if a Bose speaker shows three amber blinks?

Check the exact model and its status chart. Bose identifies repeated three amber blinks as a failed-battery state on the cited Flex (2nd Gen) and Micro (2nd Gen), and directs owners to customer service. Do not disassemble the speaker or use an unverified replacement battery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use one battery-calibration procedure for every SoundLink speaker?

No. Bose’s recommendation to use a speaker until its low-battery light appears and then recharge it fully is specifically for a Revolve+ II whose battery light may be inaccurate after a period unused. It is not a general procedure for every portable Bose speaker.

The Bottom Line

Identify the exact model and generation before checking a light, pressing a button, or choosing charging equipment. Bose’s SoundLink models use different prompts and indicator meanings, and charging lights can differ from battery-check lights. Follow the matching instructions, observe model-specific storage and wet-speaker precautions, and contact Bose customer service for the cited failed-battery patterns.
