How to Check Available Storage Space on Your PC in Windows 11

Check free space on a Windows 11 PC through File Explorer's This PC view, see what uses it in Settings > System > Storage, and review other drives.

The fastest way to see how much space is left on a Windows 11 PC is File Explorer: open This PC and read the figure under Devices and drives. Each drive reports its own free space, so a PC with C: and D: can show very different numbers for each. For a categorized breakdown of what is using that space, use Settings > System > Storage. Checking space requires nothing beyond what Windows 11 already includes.

Check free space in File Explorer

This is the quickest method when you only need to know how much room remains on a drive.

  1. Open File Explorer from the taskbar, or press Windows key + E.
  2. In the left navigation pane, select This PC. If the pane is hidden, select the view options in the File Explorer toolbar to show it, then select This PC.
  3. Under Devices and drives, read the available-space text beneath each drive, such as the drive labeled C:. Windows also draws a capacity bar, where the filled portion represents used space.

The number applies only to the drive it sits under. Free space on C: does not add to or reflect free space on D:, and a removable drive or network location that is not listed here will not appear in this figure.

See what is using the space in Settings

File Explorer tells you how much room is left, but not what is taking it up. The Storage page in Settings groups usage into categories.

Check space on other drives

The Storage page focuses on the system drive by default. To review other drives:

What the numbers include

Reserved storage

Windows keeps a portion of the system drive reserved for updates and system operations. This space counts toward the used total, but it is not ordinary personal-file space, so you cannot free it the way you would delete photos or downloads. Use the category breakdown to recognize it rather than trying to clear it.

Storage Sense is optional

Storage Sense is a cleanup feature. It is not required for checking space. Microsoft says it applies to the system drive, usually C:. For other drives, use the Storage used on other drives path described above. Its default settings do not manage your Downloads folder or cloud-synced content unless you configure those options, so enabling it will not automatically remove large personal files. Microsoft’s guide to managing drive space with Storage Sense explains the configurable options.

Cleanup guidance

Microsoft’s Free up drive space in Windows article covers removing files once you know how much room you need. Checking space and freeing space are separate steps: File Explorer and Storage settings show where you stand; cleanup actions change it.

Troubleshooting a drive that does not appear

  • The drive is missing from This PC: confirm the cable or port is connected and that the drive is powered on. Then check Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives.
  • The Storage page does not show the category you expected: select Show more categories.
  • You want a whole-PC health view: Microsoft’s PC Health Check app guide describes an optional view of main-drive usage. You do not need it for this task.

To confirm your Windows version and locate the Storage page on a particular device, Microsoft’s Find information about your Windows device page shows where those details live.

Checking available space does not require a paid storage analyzer, an external drive, or any other accessory. The built-in tools above are sufficient for the task.
