To check one app’s access, open Settings > Apps > select the app > Permissions. Choose Don’t allow for access it does not need, or select a narrower option where available. To review every app with access to a particular feature, open Permission manager and choose a permission type. Android menu names and routes vary by version and device maker; if a route differs, search Settings for “Permission manager.”
Check or revoke permissions for one app
- Open Settings > Apps. If the app is not listed, tap See all apps.
- Select the app, then tap Permissions.
- Review both allowed and denied permissions. Tap a permission the app does not need for its intended purpose and choose Don’t allow, or choose a narrower access option.
Some features may stop working after a permission is denied. If that happens, restore only the specific permission the feature requires rather than granting unrelated access. Google’s Android permission instructions describe the available controls; exact choices depend on the permission, app, and device.

Audit all apps by permission type
Permission Manager groups apps according to the kind of access they have, which is useful when asking, for example, which apps can use the camera or view contacts.

- Open Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager. Some devices use a shorter Privacy > Permission manager path.
- Choose a category such as location, camera, microphone, contacts, photos and videos, or nearby devices.
- Review the listed apps. Select an app to change its permission.
Permission Manager shows current grants. It is different from Privacy Dashboard, which records recent access activity.

Check recent permission activity
On supported devices, open Settings > Security and Privacy or Privacy > Privacy dashboard, then choose a permission category. The dashboard shows which apps accessed that permission and when; selecting an app lets you update its permission. Google documents a history of seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. These are version-specific dashboard windows, not a record of all past access. Google’s Privacy Dashboard guidance explains the feature.
Choose the right level of location access
Location permissions can differ by timing and precision. The options available vary by app and device.

- Allow only while using the app: permits location access while you are actively using the app.
- Ask every time: prompts for access when the app requests it, where this option is offered.
- Allow all the time: permits access even when the app is not in use; grant it only when the app’s function requires background location.
- Use precise location: turn this off if approximate location is enough for the app’s purpose.
- Don’t allow: blocks that app’s location permission.
An app with location permission may receive approximate location, precise location, or both. Google’s location-permission documentation describes these distinctions.

For a temporary device-wide block, open Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Privacy controls and switch off Camera access or Microphone access, if your device offers these controls. This affects apps broadly; it is not the same as denying permission to one app. Calls, scanning, recording, and other legitimate features may stop working until access is restored. Google’s privacy-controls instructions cover these device-wide switches.

Review permissions Android may reset for unused apps
Android can revoke permissions and limit background activity and notifications for apps that have not been used for a long time. Check Settings > Apps > Unused apps. For an individual app, review Pause app activity if unused in its unused-app settings. This can explain why an app later asks for permission again. Google’s unused-app guidance describes the behavior.
Google also documents a separate Play Protect permission reset for rarely used apps on Android 6.0–10: after three months without use, Play Protect may reset permissions. The documented setting is under Play Store > profile > Play Protect > Settings > Permissions for unused apps. This older-version behavior should not be confused with the general unused-app controls on newer Android releases. Google Play Help’s Play Protect guidance provides details.

Check separate permissions in Health Connect
Health Connect has its own controls for apps and health-data categories. In Health Connect, open Permissions and data > App permissions to remove an app’s access or turn off access to a particular data type. Removing permission does not delete health data already stored in Health Connect; manage stored data separately if deletion is your goal. Google’s Health Connect help explains its app permissions.

Use privacy disclosures as context, not proof of permission
Google Play’s location-sharing notice and related Data safety information describe developer-provided disclosures; they are not a substitute for checking the permissions actually granted on your device. The labels may not appear for every app or store, and developers provide and update their stated practices. Google Play’s location-sharing disclosure guidance explains the notices.
