The available route and menu labels depend on the refrigerator model, software and country, so start by identifying the complete model code and checking its Samsung support page or manual. Do not assume every Samsung refrigerator supports an app-based update.
Find your model and its supported update route
Locate the refrigerator’s complete model code on its appliance label or in its Samsung registration or support record. On Samsung’s US support site, search by model code or product name to find model-specific manuals, downloads, firmware and software. Use the Samsung support site for your country, since support information and availability can vary by market.

If your model supports SmartThings, connect it to the app before looking for an update. Samsung’s US setup instructions use Devices > Add, then either QR-code scanning or nearby-device discovery. Follow the app prompts and the refrigerator’s manual: some models show “AP” during Wi-Fi pairing, and the required buttons vary. Samsung recommends connecting the refrigerator to the same Wi-Fi network as your phone or tablet. See Samsung’s SmartThings connection guide.
Update a supported refrigerator through SmartThings
- Open SmartThings and select the connected refrigerator.
- Open the menu in the top-right corner and select Update device.
- Review the consent information shown in the app, then tap Update to begin.
- Use the app’s progress indicator and on-screen prompts to follow the update. The available controls can differ by model.
These steps follow Samsung UK’s instructions, updated February 19, 2026. Samsung does not specify a universal update duration, so rely on the app’s own status rather than assuming a particular time. Confirm the installed firmware version
After the update completes, select the refrigerator in SmartThings, open its menu, and go to Information > Software information. Check the firmware version displayed there. This is Samsung UK’s documented version-check path; if your app’s labels differ, consult the instructions for your model and region rather than guessing at a menu.
Check for an update on a Family Hub refrigerator
Some Family Hub models also provide an update option on the refrigerator itself. Samsung India’s instructions say to connect the refrigerator to wireless internet, then open Settings > About device on the panel. Update information appears on that screen; select Update if an update is available. The page was last updated October 29, 2020, so treat this as a model- and software-specific reference. If the menu differs, use the current manual for your refrigerator. Samsung US also describes checking Family Hub software updates through SmartThings; these are different interfaces, not one universal menu sequence. If the update option is missing or an error appears
- Option not shown: Recheck the exact model’s Samsung support page and manual. A missing control does not by itself show whether the model is unsupported or whether an update is available.
- Update route requires a connection: Confirm the refrigerator is online and, for SmartThings setup, follow Samsung’s guidance to put it on the same Wi-Fi network as the phone or tablet.
- Error persists: Contact Samsung support with the model code and the displayed error. Samsung Support warns, “Unless directed, do not unplug the refrigerator.” It also cautions that repeatedly dismissing or manipulating an error code can make diagnosis harder.
- Family Hub 41C returns after an update: Samsung directs owners to contact support rather than repeatedly trying to clear the code. See Samsung US refrigerator error-code guidance.
Do not use a generic power cycle as a firmware-update step. Follow the refrigerator’s model-specific instructions and Samsung’s directions if troubleshooting is needed.
