How to Check and Extract Fonts Embedded in a PDF

Inspect a PDF’s fonts with pdffonts and extract embedded resources with mutool extract—but subsets and font licenses can limit what you can reuse.

You can inspect a PDF’s fonts with Poppler’s pdffonts and extract embedded font resources with MuPDF’s mutool extract. Extraction does not guarantee a complete, installable font: PDFs may contain only a subset, and the font’s license may restrict use to viewing and printing.

What you can—and cannot—recover

A PDF may contain font-program data, but not every font is embedded. A font can be embedded only if its vendor’s settings permit it, and embedding may be full or limited to a subset of characters used in the document. Adobe explains these distinctions in its font embedding and substitution documentation.

Even when a font is embedded, extraction does not establish that you have a complete font suitable for installation or reuse in new documents. The result depends on what the PDF contains; a subset may include only the glyphs needed to display that document.

Inspect the PDF’s font inventory

Install or otherwise make Poppler’s command-line utilities available, then run:

pdffonts document.pdf

Replace document.pdf with the PDF’s path or filename. The pdffonts utility reports font names, types, encodings, embedding and subset flags, Unicode-map status, and PDF object IDs. Its emb field indicates whether a font is embedded; sub indicates whether it is a subset. Consult the Poppler pdffonts manual for the command’s documented output.

This is an inventory step, not an export: pdffonts tells you about fonts in the PDF but does not save their font programs. Fonts not marked embedded are not available for extraction from the PDF as embedded font resources.

Extract embedded font resources

MuPDF documents mutool extract as a way to extract embedded font resources and images. Run:

mutool extract document.pdf

See the MuPDF mutool extract documentation for the command’s behavior. Review the files it produces: a PDF can contain multiple fonts, subsets, or font formats, and output names may not be immediately recognizable.

Do not treat a generated file as proof that you recovered a full, installable font. Compare the extracted files with the names and subset flags from pdffonts. A subset font contains only some of the font data needed by the document, rather than necessarily containing the full typeface.

Check the license before using an extracted font

Extraction is a technical operation, not a license grant. Read the applicable font license before installing, redistributing, or using extracted data to create or edit other documents. Adobe’s PDF Reference, section 5.8, Embedded Font Programs, states: “A font program may allow embedding for the sole purpose of viewing and printing the document but not for creating new or modified text that uses the font (either in the same document or in other documents).”

Choose the right tool for the task

Need Tool or approach What it does
See which fonts a PDF uses and whether they are embedded or subsets pdffonts Lists font properties; does not export font programs.
Save embedded font resources from a PDF mutool extract Extracts embedded font resources and images; output may be a subset or a format that is not ready for every use.
Manage font embedding or substitution in a PDF workflow Adobe Acrobat documentation Describes embedding and substitution in PDF creation and output workflows; available features and interface depend on Acrobat version. See Adobe’s PDF fonts documentation and PDF creation documentation.

Use pdffonts to answer what is in the file, and mutool extract when you need to extract resources. Do not use pdfdetach for this job: it extracts document attachments, not embedded PDF fonts.
