Shut down the PC and unplug it from mains power before inspecting the RTX 5090’s power cable or socket. Look for heat damage, deformation, a damaged pin, contamination, a cable bent or pressed hard beside the plug, or a connector that is not fully seated. If you find anything abnormal, stop using the system and contact the graphics-card or power-supply maker for the correct next step.
Inspect the connector safely
- Shut down and unplug the PC. Disconnect mains power before touching the cable or card. ASUS gives this as the first step in its RTX 50 series power connector troubleshooting guidance.
- Examine the cable and plug. Look closely near the connector for discoloration, melting, deformation, other heat damage, unusual bends, or mechanical strain. ASUS says to replace a cable immediately if it is bent, deformed, overheated, or otherwise abnormal.
- Check the fit at both ends. The plug should be fully inserted and latched, with no visible gap between plug and socket. If you use an adapter, check that both of its ends are firmly connected. Seasonic’s guidance for its own cable emphasizes that connectors must be inserted, click-locked, and seated properly; follow the instructions for your specific cable.
- Inspect the card-side socket. Look for dirt or other contamination and for damaged or broken pins. Do not probe the socket or try to straighten or repair damaged pins; contact the card maker’s service team.
Seasonic also cautions users of its cited cable against bending it after connection or applying force close to the connector. Cable-specific installation directions vary, so use the instructions for the exact cable and PSU you own.

What counts as a warning sign?
- Visible melting, discoloration, deformation, or other heat damage on the plug or cable.
- A connector that appears loose, is not latched, or has a visible gap at the socket.
- A sharp bend or pressure on the cable close to the plug.
- Contamination or damaged pins in the GPU socket.
- A power-connector alert from a supported card-monitoring feature.
A normal-looking connector is not proof that its electrical contacts are undamaged: the manufacturer instructions provide visible checks, but do not establish that appearance can rule out a hidden contact problem. They also do not provide a generally applicable safe connector-temperature limit. Do not use a guessed temperature threshold as a pass/fail test.
How to interpret a monitoring alert
ASUS says its Power Detector+ feature monitors current on six sense pins. For supported ASUS cards, it can show a red alert if one or more pins report 0 A or exceed 9.2 A. Those are alert conditions for ASUS’s feature, not universal damage or temperature thresholds, and Power Detector+ is not established as available on every RTX 5090.

- CHECK COMPATIBILITY BEFORE PURCHASE: This product is only compatible with specific models. Please review the Compatibility List in the A+ Content below before ordering to ensure your device/model is supported.
- GPU POWER METER FOR 12V-2X6 CONNECTIONS – WireView Pro II monitors graphics-card power delivery directly at the GPU cable path.
- HARDWARE-BASED MONITORING WITHOUT REQUIRED SOFTWARE – Shows key values directly on the display, with optional software use.
- EXTENDED 2-YEAR WARRANTY - For qualifying damage to the 12VHPWR or 12V-2x6 connector, Thermal Grizzly provides repair or, if repair is not possible, an equivalent replacement
- DESIGNED FOR ADDITIONAL PC SAFETY – Supports early detection of abnormal power behavior on compatible 12V-2x6 GPU setups.
Treat an alert as a reason to power down and inspect the connection, not as a substitute for doing so. ASUS recommends contacting its service center if its red alert remains after the listed checks.
Choose any replacement cable for the exact hardware
Do not buy or connect a cable solely because its plug looks right. Confirm that it is explicitly compatible with your exact PSU model and approved or specified for your exact graphics card. Follow the card maker’s instructions on whether that board uses a supplied adapter or a native PSU cable; also ensure the case leaves enough room for the cable without forcing it sideways at the plug.

For context, NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 Founders Edition specifications and setup guidance describe two power paths: the supplied adapter connected to three or four PCIe 8-pin leads, or a PCIe Gen 5 power cable. The setup section specifies a 450 W-or-greater Gen 5 cable, while the general specification table lists a 600 W PCIe Gen 5 cable. Follow the documentation shipped with the card and PSU rather than treating either figure or option as a universal instruction for all RTX 5090 models. Board-partner card specifications and included accessories can differ.

Its page lists 1,000 W required system power based on a PC configured with a Ryzen 9 9950X, and setup guidance gives 850 W as a minimum while noting that configuration may require more. When to stop and contact support
- Cable looks abnormal: Do not continue operating the PC. Replace it only with a cable the PSU maker confirms is compatible with the exact PSU, and follow the GPU maker’s instructions.
- Socket or pins look damaged: Leave the connector alone and contact the graphics-card maker’s service team.
- Supported ASUS Power Detector+ alert persists: After ASUS’s listed checks, contact an ASUS service center.
- You are unsure whether the cable is seated or compatible: Keep the PC unplugged and ask the card or PSU maker rather than testing with a generic cable or adapter.
Why seating is worth checking
In a 2022 update about RTX 4090 reports, NVIDIA said its findings at that time suggested incomplete insertion was a common issue and advised securing the connector before powering on. That historical statement explains why seating is an important check; it does not quantify RTX 5090 incidents or establish the cause of any individual connector problem.
