To check an OLED TV for burn-in, compare the screen across varied content and uniform full-screen colors or gray shades, then run the TV’s built-in Picture Test if available. A faint ghost that fades after you change content is more consistent with temporary image retention; a mark that persists across content and appears in the TV’s own test warrants contacting the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. One visual check cannot prove the physical cause, and a pixel-refresh routine is not a guaranteed fix for permanent burn-in.
What to check before deciding it is burn-in
First note the mark’s shape, location, and when it appears. An outline that resembles a channel logo, ticker, scoreboard, or paused game interface may be related to static content, but appearance alone is not a diagnosis. A defect limited to one HDMI input or connected device may instead come from the signal path. Straight vertical or horizontal bands can be uniformity artifacts rather than a retained image.

Use the observations together: whether the mark fades after changing content, whether it appears over several kinds of content, and whether it is visible in a test generated by the TV itself. A uniform field can reveal subtle outlines that are hard to notice in a busy scene. None of these checks establishes the panel’s physical cause with certainty; they help you decide what to investigate or report.
Before testing, let the television display a normal picture for a moment and inspect it from your usual seating position. Avoid pressing on the panel or wiping it while diagnosing the problem. If the mark is difficult to see, note the room lighting and picture mode so that later comparisons use similar conditions. The goal is a repeatable observation, not a one-time impression from an unusually bright or dark scene.

Check the screen step by step
1. Change content and watch for fading
- Switch away from the channel, game, or paused screen where you first noticed the mark. Play varied ordinary content rather than leaving another static screen displayed.
- Look at the same area of the display and note whether the ghost becomes fainter. LG says ordinary image retention commonly fades after “a moment or two”; its guidance describes burn-in as lasting longer and usually remaining visible during other content. That is a useful distinction, not a fixed timing test: the sources do not establish a universal number of minutes or hours that proves permanence.
- Record what you see without repeatedly changing settings or launching maintenance routines. Note the content on which the mark first appeared and whether it changes as you view other material.
Use more than one type of picture for this comparison. A movie, a sports broadcast, a game, and a simple menu can reveal different aspects of the symptom. A ghost that is visible only immediately after a pause and then fades is less concerning than a fixed outline that remains through unrelated scenes. Conversely, temporary retention can be easier to notice on a plain scene than on detailed video, so do not conclude that it has disappeared merely because it is hidden by image detail.
A temporary-looking ghost that fades is less concerning than a fixed outline that remains, but fading or persistence by itself does not identify every possible cause.
2. Show uniform colors and gray shades
Display full-screen solid colors and gray fields, one at a time. A uniform screen removes the detail and movement of ordinary programming, making an outline or uneven area easier to compare against the rest of the panel. Tom’s Guide’s test-pattern procedure uses solid colors and gray fields for this reason. You can use a built-in test-pattern video or a diagnostic pattern provided by the TV; the cited guidance does not establish that a physical testing device is necessary.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

A logo-shaped outline may stand out against gray, while broad changes in brightness or color may be easier to see on a solid white, red, green, or blue field. Keep the pattern full-screen and allow it to remain long enough to inspect, but do not leave a bright static pattern running unnecessarily.
Look for a shape that corresponds to a static logo, ticker, or interface, as well as broad areas of uneven brightness or straight bands. Do not treat every visible variation on a uniform screen as burn-in. Some uniformity artifacts are distinct from burn-in, and the appearance of bands alone does not show that pixel refresh will remove them. If the pattern itself comes from an external player, repeat the check with the television’s own diagnostic image where possible.
3. Run the TV’s own Picture Test
If your model provides a built-in Picture Test, run it using the on-screen instructions for that TV. The test displays an image produced by the television rather than relying on the external device and cable currently in use. Samsung says its Picture Test can help separate a TV-side issue from an external-source problem: a defect present in the test can warrant support, while normal output in the test can point toward the connected setup. Samsung’s menu path varies by model year and software version, so use the instructions for your exact set rather than assuming a universal path.
Compare the test with what you saw from HDMI, broadcast, streaming, or game content. If the mark appears only from a connected source and not in the TV’s own test, do not diagnose panel damage from that one source. If the same shape is visible in the test, repeat it once under the same conditions and document the result rather than repeatedly running maintenance cycles.

4. Isolate a connected device or cable
When the defect appears only on one input, change one part of that signal path at a time. Try another input, another cable, or another connected device if available, and see whether the symptom follows the source or remains with the TV. Samsung’s guidance identifies the Picture Test and checks of external devices or cables as ways to investigate this distinction.
For example, if a game-console menu produces the mark but the TV’s home screen and Picture Test do not, test the console on another input and test another source on the original input. If changing the cable makes the symptom disappear, keep investigating the signal chain instead of treating the panel as defective. A symptom that follows one device or connection should be investigated there; one that also appears in the TV-generated test is a stronger reason to ask the manufacturer for panel-specific guidance. This comparison narrows the possibilities but does not replace service diagnosis.
5. Document a persistent mark
If the same mark remains in the TV’s own test and across varied content, photograph it and make a short record before contacting support. Include the TV model, software version, input or source, the conditions under which the mark appears, and whether it changes after switching content. Record whether the shape resembles a logo, ticker, scoreboard, or game interface, and whether it is a narrow outline, a broad patch, or straight bands.
Use the same pattern and viewing conditions for any follow-up photographs. The record helps the manufacturer or qualified repair provider understand what you observed without treating a visual test as proof of a particular failure. Keep the purchase and warranty information available, because coverage and service procedures depend on the exact model and region.

| What you observe | What it may indicate | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| A faint ghost after changing content that becomes less visible | Temporary image retention is one possibility. LG says ordinary retention commonly fades after a moment or two. | Continue with varied content and uniform fields; note whether it fades rather than relying on a single glance. |
| A fixed outline that remains over other content and in the TV’s own test | Persistent burn-in is a concern, especially if the shape corresponds to previously displayed static material. Appearance alone cannot certify the cause. | Document the mark and contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider. |
| A defect that appears from one connected source but not in the TV’s Picture Test | An external device, cable, or source signal may be involved. | Compare inputs, cables, and devices before concluding the panel is affected. |
| Straight vertical or horizontal bands, or broad unevenness on a uniform field | A uniformity artifact can resemble retained imagery but may be a different issue. Tom’s Guide notes that pixel refresh does not necessarily remove every kind of uniformity artifact. | Compare the symptom across content and the built-in test; escalate an unresolved or worsening issue rather than repeatedly running refresh routines. |
These are clues, not a guaranteed classification system. A single test cannot prove that a mark is permanent, and the cited guidance does not define a universal wait time that separates temporary retention from burn-in. The location and shape matter, but a mark that looks like a logo is not conclusive if it appears only through one source. Likewise, a mark that is absent on a busy scene may still be visible on a uniform field.
Should you run Pixel Cleaning or Panel Refresh?
OLED maintenance features have different names and behavior across brands and models. A routine may be automatic, a manual option may have restrictions, and the TV may need to be turned off or left in standby for its care process. Follow the manual for your exact model. Do not repeatedly launch a manual refresh because a mark appeared, and do not assume that any refresh routine reverses established permanent burn-in.
Keep preventive functions enabled when the manufacturer recommends them. Pixel Shift, Screen Optimization, Pixel Cleaning, and Panel Refresh are not interchangeable terms: they can refer to different processes, schedules, and limits. A feature that runs automatically after standby is not necessarily the same as a manually started panel refresh. Read the on-screen warning and the model guide before confirming a manual cycle, and do not interrupt a cycle unless the instructions specifically allow it.

| Manufacturer or example | Documented care guidance | Important scope |
|---|---|---|
| LG OLED TVs | LG says its screen saver activates after about two minutes of inactivity on a No Signal screen or paused video. It describes automatic Pixel Cleaning after four cumulative hours and a longer calibration after 2,000 cumulative hours. LG also describes a logo-brightness setting. | These are LG support details; manual options and run times depend on the model. They are not instructions for OLED TVs generally. |
| Samsung TVs | Samsung’s regional guidance says Screen Optimization runs automatically when the TV is turned off after at least four hours of use. | Picture Test steps and menu labels vary by model year and software. Check the instructions for your set. |
| Sony OLED TVs | Sony says Pixel Shift periodically moves the image and should ordinarily remain enabled. Its cited help guide reserves manual Panel Refresh for particularly noticeable retention, gives a once-a-year reference limit, and says the process takes about an hour. | These are model-specific instructions. Consult the exact Sony guide before using manual Panel Refresh. |
| Philips 34M2C8600 QD-OLED monitor | Philips’ 2025 care guide for this monitor describes automatic refresh after 16 cumulative hours, around 15 minutes per run, and a menu counter. | This is guidance for the named monitor, not a schedule for Philips TVs or other monitors. |
The intervals above describe the manufacturers’ maintenance guidance for the stated products; they are not burn-in thresholds, panel-lifespan figures, or evidence that a particular mark will be repaired. Use a manual refresh only when the model’s instructions call for it. If the feature runs automatically, follow the manufacturer’s directions about leaving the TV connected to power or in standby so the cycle can complete. Do not substitute the Philips monitor interval for a Philips television, or a Sony instruction for an LG or Samsung set.

Why static content can raise the risk
LG identifies static logos, paused games, vivid mode, and prolonged high brightness as risk factors. RTINGS also discusses varying content, choosing comfortable contrast and brightness settings, using built-in OLED care features, and turning the TV off during long pauses. These are risk-reduction practices, not guarantees that a display will never retain an image.
- Vary the material you watch and play instead of leaving the same bright fixed graphic on screen for extended periods.
- Use the screen saver and logo-dimming protections recommended for your model, and keep its preventive features enabled unless the manufacturer’s instructions say otherwise.
- For a long pause, turn the TV off or allow the recommended screen saver to activate rather than leaving a bright, static interface displayed.
- Use brightness and contrast settings that are comfortable for your room and viewing, rather than assuming the most vivid setting is necessary.
- Check the model manual for how automatic care works, including whether the set must remain connected to power while off or in standby.
Care schedules are not interchangeable between brands or even between models from one brand. For example, LG’s cumulative-hour intervals, Samsung’s described standby behavior, and Sony’s manual-refresh guidance refer to different product instructions. Do not disable a protection function or start a maintenance cycle based on advice written for a different model.
When to contact support
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider when a mark remains in the TV’s own Picture Test and across varied content, or when an unresolved artifact is worsening. Share the photographs and observation notes, then ask for diagnosis using the exact model and software information. Check the warranty terms that apply to that model and region; coverage cannot be inferred from the appearance of a mark alone.
Also seek guidance when you cannot reproduce the symptom consistently, when the mark appears in multiple inputs but not in the same way, or when you are unsure which maintenance option your model uses. Tell support whether the television completed its automatic care cycle and whether the symptom changed afterward. Do not claim that a particular number of minutes proves burn-in, and do not promise that a refresh cycle will restore a panel.
A test pattern is a way to inspect the display, not a repair. The cited manufacturer guidance describes preventive features and panel-maintenance routines, but it does not support promising that a routine will reverse established permanent burn-in. A service provider can assess the specific case; repeated manual refresh attempts are not a substitute for that diagnosis.

Can a single color test prove burn-in?
No. Solid colors and gray fields make outlines easier to see, but one visual test cannot establish permanence or the physical cause. Compare the result with varied content and the TV’s own Picture Test.

How long should I wait before calling it burn-in?
There is no universal time threshold in the cited guidance. LG describes ordinary retention as often fading after a moment or two and burn-in as lasting longer and usually remaining visible over other content. Treat that as a distinction, not a stopwatch rule.
Should I buy a special burn-in tester?
No dedicated hardware tester is established as necessary. A built-in diagnostic pattern, the TV’s Picture Test, or a free test-pattern video can support the inspection. A replacement TV, screen-cleaning product, or generic HDMI cable is not a burn-in diagnostic tool.
What if the mark appears only with my game console?
Check another input, cable, and source device, then run the TV’s Picture Test. If the mark is absent from the TV-generated test and follows the console or cable, investigate that signal path before concluding the panel is damaged.
Can Pixel Cleaning remove permanent burn-in?
Do not assume so. Maintenance routines may address certain retention or panel-uniformity conditions, but the cited guidance does not justify promising that they reverse established permanent burn-in. Use them only according to the exact model’s instructions.
Why does my TV need to stay plugged in?
Some models perform automatic care while turned off or in standby. The manual may require standby power for the cycle to run, so follow the manufacturer’s directions rather than disconnecting the set immediately after use.
Is every band on a gray screen burn-in?
No. Straight vertical or horizontal bands and broad unevenness can be uniformity artifacts distinct from retained imagery. Compare them across content and the built-in test, and escalate a persistent or worsening issue instead of repeatedly launching refresh routines.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check an OLED TV for burn-in?
Switch to varied content, inspect full-screen solid colors and gray fields, and run the TV’s built-in Picture Test if available. A mark that persists across content and appears in the TV-generated test should be documented and reported to the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.
Is this image retention or permanent burn-in?
A faint ghost that fades after changing content is more consistent with temporary image retention. Burn-in lasts much longer and is usually visible over other content, but there is no universal wait time that proves permanence.
Can Pixel Cleaning or Panel Refresh fix burn-in?
Do not treat refresh as a guaranteed cure. Pixel Cleaning, Screen Optimization, Pixel Shift, and Panel Refresh vary by model; follow the exact manual and avoid repeated manual cycles without model-specific guidance.

Do I need special hardware to test for burn-in?
No. Built-in diagnostics or a free test-pattern video can make persistent outlines easier to see. The cited guidance does not establish a dedicated physical tester as necessary.
Why should OLED care features stay enabled?
Screen savers, logo dimming, Pixel Shift, and automatic panel-care routines are designed to reduce risk or maintain the panel. Keep them enabled when the manufacturer recommends it, and follow the instructions about standby power.
When should I contact support?
Contact the manufacturer or qualified repair provider when the mark remains across varied content and in the TV’s own Picture Test, or when an unresolved artifact worsens. Send photographs, model and software details, source information, and your observations.
The Bottom Line
Use varied content, uniform color and gray fields, and the TV’s own Picture Test to investigate a suspected OLED mark. Fading suggests temporary retention; persistence in the built-in test calls for manufacturer or qualified-service advice. Keep model-specific OLED care features enabled, but do not treat manual refresh as a guaranteed cure for permanent burn-in.
