To check your AirPods’ current charge, open the case lid or take out the earbuds, keep them near an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, then view them in that device’s Bluetooth or sound controls. The case status light is a quick clue, but its meaning depends on whether the earbuds are inside.
Check AirPods battery on iPhone or iPad
- Open the AirPods case lid or remove the earbuds, then hold them close to your iPhone or iPad.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the Info button next to your AirPods to see their charge.

Check AirPods battery on a Mac
- Open the case lid or take out the earbuds and keep them near your Mac.
- Open Control Center > Sound.
- Select your AirPods to view their charge information.

Understand the case status light
The light reports different things depending on what is in the case:

- AirPods inside, case lid open: the light indicates the AirPods’ charge.
- AirPods removed: the light indicates the case’s charge.
Apple says green means fully charged and amber means “less than one full charge remains.” Amber is not an exact percentage. On newer cases the light is commonly on the front; on the Lightning case for first- or second-generation AirPods, it is inside. The light may appear only briefly in some charging situations. What low-battery alerts mean
Apple reports low-charge notifications at 20%, 10%, and 5%. A tone sounds when charge reaches 10% and again shortly before the AirPods shut down. Treat these as alerts about current charge, not as a measurement of long-term battery condition.

Charge the case using a compatible method
AirPods recharge while stored in their case. The charging method depends on the case model: use a cable that matches its connector, or use wireless charging only if that particular case supports it. Apple lists Qi charging for eligible cases and Apple Watch charging for specified case models. Identify the case before choosing a cable or wireless charger; a USB-C cable is appropriate only for a case with a USB-C connector.

Battery charge is not battery health
A percentage tells you how much charge is available now; by itself, it does not diagnose the battery’s long-term condition. The Apple support material cited here does not establish a universal battery-health percentage or replacement threshold.
