Evaluate camera motion across the full clip, not from its best-looking frame. Check whether the requested move is visible and continuous, whether the viewpoint shift preserves a coherent scene, and whether the motion introduces jumps, drift, flicker, or changing geometry. Human review is essential; optical flow and point tracks can add evidence, but no single metric provides a complete verdict or a universal pass score.
What to evaluate in a camera move
Separate the intended camera path from the quality of the motion. A smooth clip can move in the wrong direction, and a large movement is not automatically more coherent or more faithful to a prompt. Assess each output on distinct axes before forming an overall judgment.

| Axis | What to check |
|---|---|
| Prompt and path adherence | Does the viewpoint move in the requested direction and manner—for example, a pan, tilt, push-in, pull-back, or orbit? |
| Motion amplitude | Is the movement perceptible, and is its scale appropriate to the request? A nearly static clip may look stable without completing the move. |
| Smoothness and continuity | Does the motion start, continue, and end coherently, without jumps, stalls, reversals, or unnatural changes in acceleration? |
| Viewpoint and scene consistency | Do perspective and background features respond plausibly to the apparent viewpoint change, or do they drift or change structure? |
| Foreground and object integrity | Do subjects retain coherent shape and identity? Watch for warping, disappearance, or an object changing into something else. |
| Evidence used | Is the judgment based on full-clip human review, point tracks, optical flow, a benchmark score, or a combination? |
These dimensions reflect concerns addressed in video-generation benchmarks: VBench includes motion smoothness, temporal flicker, subject-identity consistency, and spatial relationships among its 16 evaluation dimensions (VBench paper). VMBench assesses motion amplitude, smoothness, and integrity (VMBench paper), while camera-controlled video assessment also treats viewpoint consistency, motion coherence, and content preservation as important concerns (CamWorldQA preprint).

- Write down the intended move. Record the requested direction and type of motion, and note what should remain stable. For example: “push in toward the subject while keeping the subject’s identity and the room layout coherent.”
- Watch the entire clip at normal speed. Judge whether the movement begins, continues, and ends as intended. Note pauses, sudden accelerations, direction reversals, jumps, and movement that seems unrelated to the prompt.
- Inspect more than the most appealing moment. Scrub through the early, middle, and late portions, paying attention to transitions between them. A convincing still does not show whether the motion connecting it to the next moment works.
- Follow foreground and background together. Observe how subjects and background features shift relative to one another as the viewpoint changes. Look for scene drift, disappearing objects, identity changes, flicker, and warped geometry.
- Add motion evidence if available. Point trajectories can expose unstable paths over time; optical flow estimates apparent pixel movement between frames. Use these as additional clues, not replacements for viewing the clip.
- Score the axes separately. Record path adherence, amplitude, continuity, scene consistency, object integrity, and visible artifacts before deciding whether the overall result succeeds.
- Compare outputs consistently. Use the same prompt and review procedure for each clip. If you generate several versions, review all of them or state which sample you assessed; one output does not establish a model’s typical performance.
What motion-analysis methods can and cannot show
Human review
A viewer can judge whether a move reads as intentional and whether an artifact is noticeable or distracting. Benchmark studies use human ratings and pairwise comparisons, but different study procedures do not produce a universal scoring scale. Human review is especially useful for connecting technical evidence to the prompt and to the scene’s meaning.
Optical flow
Optical flow estimates apparent pixel displacement between frames. It can help reveal motion magnitude or irregular transitions, but it is not a direct measurement of camera pose. Moving subjects, occlusions, and generated distortions all affect the apparent movement, so flow alone cannot tell whether the camera followed the requested path or whether the movement came from the camera rather than an object. VMBench reports using optical-flow-based amplitude measurement alongside smoothness and integrity checks (VMBench paper).

Point tracks and trajectories
Point tracking follows selected image points across time. Inconsistent trajectories can reveal unstable movement that a single frame conceals. TRAJAN describes reconstructing point tracks and using reconstruction errors to assess motion and temporal consistency (TRAJAN project page). Tracks are evidence about motion patterns, not a stand-alone judgment of whether a camera move is appropriate to the prompt.

Structural checks and composite scores
Feature and structural checks can help flag flicker, changing subject identity, or broken spatial relationships. VBench’s 16 dimensions include several of these concerns, but its authors note that existing metrics do not fully align with human perception (VBench paper). A composite score is useful for comparison only when you know which dimensions it combines; it should not replace inspection of the underlying clip.

Common scoring mistakes
- Choosing by a hero frame: A plausible frame can sit inside a sequence with poor motion. Judge the connecting movement across time.
- Equating more movement with better movement: Amplitude and motion quality are different questions. A larger move may be less controlled or less faithful.
- Rewarding stability when the prompt asks for motion: High frame similarity can favor a nearly static output. AIGCBench identifies this risk in fixed consistency measures (AIGCBench paper).
- Treating smoothness as prompt success: A smooth trajectory can still be the wrong move. Score adherence separately.
- Reading flow as camera pose: Flow measures apparent pixel movement, which can include subject motion, occlusion effects, and distortions.
- Overgeneralizing benchmark results: Benchmark sample sizes describe the study or dataset, not the probability that a particular consumer tool will produce a defect. For example, VMBench reports 1,050 prompts across six movement modes, 6,300 generated videos across six models, and a human-aligned validation sample of 1,200 videos; these are properties of that benchmark, not population-level estimates for all tools.
Why camera-controlled video needs more than generic metrics
Camera movement changes how the viewer sees the whole scene, so evaluation must account for more than whether nearby frames look alike. A useful assessment asks whether the viewpoint, background, and foreground remain coherent as the camera moves. CamWorldQA’s August 2026 preprint describes a study with 720 generated videos, six generation methods, 20 source videos, and six camera trajectories, with human-rated perceptual-quality annotations. Those figures describe its experimental scope, not a universal standard or pass threshold (CamWorldQA preprint).
Other benchmarks also organize evaluation across multiple dimensions rather than one visual score. AIGCBench describes 11 metrics across control-video alignment, motion effects, temporal consistency, and video quality (AIGCBench paper). DynamicEval’s ICLR 2026 submission description focuses on foreground and background consistency under dynamic camera motion and reports 3,000 videos and 45,000 human annotations (DynamicEval submission). These figures explain the scope of the named studies; they do not establish how often a particular product will fail.
How to report an evaluation clearly
If you need to explain why one clip works better than another, make the judgment auditable rather than collapsing it into “good motion.” State the prompt and intended move, describe what happens across the clip, and identify the evidence behind the assessment.

- Name the requested path and whether the output followed it.
- Describe motion amplitude and continuity separately.
- Note any foreground or background inconsistency, flicker, drift, or geometry change.
- Say whether the assessment came from human viewing, motion analysis, benchmark dimensions, or several of these.
- If using a numeric rating, publish the axes and your threshold; the cited work does not establish an agreed universal pass score.
