AI-generated citations are trustworthy only after someone verifies both the source and the claim it is attached to. Two report audits published in 2026 by GPTZero—one examining a KPMG report and another examining an EY Canada report—showed how plausible-looking references can be altered, ambiguous, broken, misattributed, or inconsistent with the report’s own figures. They illustrate a failure of evidence checking, not proof that AI cannot assist research.
What the KPMG citation audit found
KPMG International’s October 2025 report, Total Experience: Redefining Excellence in the Age of Agentic AI, summarized its Global Customer Experience Excellence study. GPTZero examined 45 citations and, in its 12 June 2026 investigation, classified them as follows:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| GPTZero classification | Count | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Accurately pointed to real sources | 5 of 45 | GPTZero said these citations accurately pointed to real sources. |
| Paraphrased titles and/or fake components for real sources | 28 of 45 | The references had some connection to real sources, but titles or other details were altered or fabricated. |
| Too vague or flawed for a confident match | 12 of 45 | GPTZero said it could not confidently determine the source match. |
The shorthand “five real sources out of 45” needs care: the other 40 were not all established as wholly invented sources. GPTZero’s breakdown includes 28 references with paraphrased titles or fabricated components attached to real sources, plus 12 it could not confidently match. Its classification also treats paraphrased titles and incorrect authors as possible hallucinations. GPTZero further said roughly half of the claims evidenced by the citations appeared fake or misattributed. These are the findings and classifications of the investigating organization, not an independent replication. Read GPTZero’s KPMG investigation.

GPTZero’s 14 May 2026 investigation examined EY Canada’s late-2025, 44-page report Points of Attack: Uncovering Cyber Threats and Fraud in Loyalty Systems. It described broken or fake URLs, mismatched titles, misattributions, and contradictions in the report. One example it raised involved the report’s statements about a $200 billion global loyalty-points value and $200 billion in unredeemed points, alongside a claim that 30–50% of points go unused. GPTZero said those statements were internally inconsistent.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The dollar and percentage figures here are examples of claims scrutinized in GPTZero’s investigation, not validated estimates of the loyalty-points market or redemption behavior. The investigation’s observations should likewise be attributed to GPTZero rather than presented as an independent recheck of the original sources. Read GPTZero’s EY investigation.
What “vibe citing” means—and what the cases do not prove
GPTZero uses “vibe citing” for references that an AI language model accidentally creates through hallucination. Its investigation describes the term as covering “the accidental creation of fake references via LLM hallucinations across a spectrum of severity.” The phrase can encompass more than a source that never existed: a real source with a wrong title, author, or other details may also fail as a usable citation.

The two investigations concern specific reports and were conducted by GPTZero. They do not establish a rate of citation failure across either firm’s wider work, the consulting industry, or AI-assisted research generally. Nor are the audits identical measures: KPMG’s investigation gives a numerical citation breakdown, while the EY investigation highlights examples of broken links and conflicting claims. Comparing their counts or ranking the firms would therefore be misleading.

How to fact-check citations in an AI-written report
Rob Smith, CEO of Lionfish Tech Advisors, calls the remedy “order of operations.” He asks: “Does the cited source exist, and does it say what we claim it says?” For a research buyer or editor, that means checking each claim against the original material rather than treating a formatted reference as proof.

- Open the cited source. Confirm that the link resolves to the material being cited; do not assume a plausible URL or citation title is genuine.
- Check the reference details. Verify the title, author, publisher, publication date, and locator—such as a page, section, table, or stable URL—against the source itself.
- Find the supporting passage. Read the relevant text and determine whether it actually supports the attached claim. A real source can still be cited inaccurately.
- Preserve the scope of numbers. Check that a statistic retains its original population, geography, time period, and definition. Confirm that a report has not changed what the figure measures.
- Test internal consistency. Compare important numbers and statements across the report; contradictions can reveal an error even when individual references look credible.
- Confirm high-impact descriptions where practical. If a report makes a consequential claim about a named organization, ask whether the organization recognizes the description and its context.
- Record who checked what. Keep a review trail showing who opened each source, what passage supports the claim, and which items remain unresolved.
This checklist operationalizes the questions in Smith’s commentary; it is a practical synthesis, not a tested intervention or formal standard. GPTZero says it used its Hallucination Check tool in the investigations. A detector may help flag references for human review, but it cannot replace opening the source and checking what it says. Read Smith’s commentary on the verification workflow.

The investigations do not establish what internal controls either firm later adopted, whether either report is currently available from its publisher, or the complete original report texts from the firms. GPTZero’s investigation pages are primary evidence of what GPTZero reported finding; they are not independent proof of every underlying claim. For accountability questions, distinguish the published audit observations from facts that have not been established here.
