Before buying a used Nintendo 3DS, test its screens, touch input, controls, charging, battery condition and a physical game—not just whether it turns on. Ask the seller to bring it charged, its charger and, if possible, a working game. First identify the exact model: original 3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL, 2DS or New 2DS XL. Features and repair options differ, and a quick inspection cannot guarantee the remaining life of an old battery or rule out an intermittent fault.
Inspect the shell and hinges
In good light, check for cracks, deep impact marks, loose panels, stripped screws, missing rubber pads, corrosion or residue near ports, and gaps where the case should sit flush. Cosmetic scuffs are usually less concerning than structural damage or a hinge that cannot hold the console at its normal open positions.

Open and close the system slowly. Watch for screen flicker, blackouts or a sudden shutdown as the hinge moves. This is a practical check for a hinged handheld, not a formal Nintendo grading test.

Check both displays and the touch screen
Boot to the HOME Menu and examine each screen against both bright and dark backgrounds. Look for cracks, lines, pressure marks, dead pixels, discoloration, debris beneath the panel or a screen separating from its frame. Nintendo lists display and debris issues among troubleshooting concerns in its touch-screen troubleshooting guidance and 3DS XL operations manual.

On a 3D-capable model, test the top screen’s depth effect with a known compatible 3DS title. A 2DS has no stereoscopic 3D display, and some software or content does not support 3D, so a game without depth is not by itself evidence of a fault.
To test touch input, open Game Notes and draw slow lines through the center and close to all four edges. Gaps, jumps or input appearing away from the stylus can indicate a problem. Nintendo recommends checking for smudges or debris and removing a screen protector when troubleshooting; do not remove a seller’s protector without permission. If touch input remains faulty, Nintendo says service may be required.
Test every control
Press each face button, Start, Select, Home, both shoulder buttons and every direction on the D-pad. Check for sticky, mushy or unresponsive buttons. Move the Circle Pad through its full range and watch whether on-screen movement follows smoothly, without drift or dead zones. On New models, test the C-stick and any additional controls present.

Its support guidance also notes that a stuck button may require service if cleaning does not resolve it. A control that works only when pressed unusually hard is still a fault to factor into the price.
Check audio, cameras and wireless functions
Raise and lower the volume and listen to both speakers for distortion, crackling or silence. If practical, plug in headphones and check their output. Open the camera app and view both the front and rear cameras. Test the wireless switch or setting; local wireless can only be checked if another compatible device is available. Nintendo’s manual includes speaker-volume troubleshooting, but these checks are practical inspection steps rather than a published second-hand test protocol.

Verify charging and look for battery trouble
Power the console off and on, then connect a compatible charger. Check that the charge indicator comes on steadily and that the connector fits without excessive movement or needing to be wiggled. Nintendo Australia identifies AC adapter model WAP-002 for the 3DS family and says its orange charge LED indicates charging. Check the adapter’s regional plug and compatibility rather than assuming an included charger is suitable where you live. Nintendo notes that a port may look slightly bent by design; that appearance alone is not damage unless it prevents insertion.
Nintendo Australia gives about 3½ hours for a full charge and estimates 3–5 hours of Nintendo 3DS software play or 5–8 hours of Nintendo DS software play, with runtime varying by screen brightness. These are manufacturer reference figures, not pass/fail limits for an aged battery. A brief meetup test cannot establish battery health.

Inspect the back cover and case seams for bulging or separation, and see whether the console rocks on a flat surface. Nintendo’s manual says battery expansion can occur and is not by itself a malfunction or safety hazard, but advises replacing the battery if expansion affects battery life. Treat pronounced swelling, leakage or case distortion as a serious warning: do not press or puncture the battery, and do not touch a leaking battery.
Test a game and confirm the handover
If possible, insert a known-working physical game and launch it. Confirm that it reads reliably, ideally after restarting the console, and look for visible debris or damage around the cartridge slot. A game test checks card reading and basic play in a way that reaching the HOME Menu cannot.

Ask the seller to show System Settings and confirm that the console reaches the HOME Menu without restrictions. If parental controls are enabled, have the seller remove them or demonstrate that the system can be configured before you pay. Do not count installed digital games as part of the value unless you independently establish which account owns them and what access rules apply; a definitive account-transfer procedure is not established here.

Repair options depend on the model and where you live. Nintendo’s Americas touch-screen support page says it no longer services the original 3DS, original 3DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL and 2DS models listed there, while it lists New 2DS XL as available for service on that page. This is a US/Americas statement, not a global guarantee. If a model is unsupported in your region, a fault may mean third-party repair or parts sourcing, so even a seemingly small defect can change whether the purchase makes sense.

When comparing two listings, weigh the exact model and features, screen and control condition, charging and battery behavior, structural versus cosmetic wear, included charger/stylus/SD or microSD card and games, seller return terms, and local service availability. Do not assume panel type, a model name or an advertised premium proves a particular unit is a better buy.
Know what still works online
Nintendo ended 3DS eShop purchases and downloads of free content, including demos, on March 27, 2023. Nintendo says users can still redownload previously purchased games and DLC and receive software updates for the foreseeable future, but that does not mean a buyer can access purchases attached to a seller’s account. Online play and other functions using online communication ended on April 8, 2024. That includes online co-op, internet rankings and data distribution; offline modes remain usable. StreetPass still works through local communication, while SpotPass functions that rely on online communication no longer do. Nintendo said Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter services were still usable when it published its online-services announcement, while warning that could change.
