To see whether your PC is a plausible match for a Steam game, open that game’s Store page and scroll to System Requirements. Compare its listed operating system and hardware with the computer you’ll use. Treat the comparison as a screening check, not a performance guarantee: meeting minimum requirements does not promise smooth play or a particular frame rate.
Where to find a game’s system requirements on Steam

Open the game’s Steam Store page.

Scroll to System Requirements. Steam lists the title’s requirements and compatible operating systems there. Check the operating-system entry as carefully as the hardware; for example, note whether the game requires 64-bit Windows. Steam Support explains where requirements appear on Store pages.

Requirements are specific to each title. The fields vary, but commonly include processor, memory (RAM), graphics, DirectX, and storage. Use the game’s current Store page rather than assuming another game’s requirements—or an older listing—applies.
How to compare the requirements with your computer
Check each relevant line against the system you intend to play on. A hardware match does not make up for an unsupported operating system: compare the OS and version as well as the components. If the page lists both minimum and recommended configurations, read both. Steam’s guidance describes the requirements section; the live game page determines which requirements apply to that title.

- Operating system: Confirm the listed OS and version are supported, including any 64-bit requirement.
- Processor: Compare your CPU with the processor named for minimum and recommended play.
- Memory: Check installed RAM against the listed amount.
- Graphics: Compare your graphics card or integrated graphics with the requirement. Don’t assume integrated graphics will perform like a dedicated card.
- Graphics API: Check DirectX or another graphics/API requirement if one is listed.
- Storage: Make sure you have enough available space for the game.
What minimum and recommended mean
Minimum is the publisher’s stated threshold, not a promise of a particular frame rate, graphics quality, or trouble-free launch. Recommended specs give you a second reference point, but they still do not guarantee a specific result. If your system is close to the minimum, performance or launch problems are possible. Steam cautions that meeting listed requirements alone does not mean you will get high FPS. Steam Support also notes the limits of judging performance from system requirements.
How to check Steam Deck compatibility
If you’re buying for Steam Deck, check the game’s separate Deck compatibility label as well as any PC requirements. Steam uses four categories:

- Playable: The Store page identifies criteria it does not meet for Verified.
- Unsupported: The Store page identifies criteria it does not meet for Verified.
- Unknown: Steam has not tested the title.
Read the listed criteria for a Playable or Unsupported game instead of relying on the label alone. Deck compatibility is a separate check from comparing desktop PC components. Steam’s compatibility information describes the Deck categories and criteria.
What to do if your PC or operating system falls short
First identify the exact mismatch: operating system, processor, RAM, graphics, API, or storage. There is no universal upgrade that fixes every shortfall; what matters depends on the particular game and your existing system. If the operating system is unsupported, don’t assume a workaround means the game is officially supported.

Some Linux players try Proton to run Windows games, but compatibility and troubleshooting vary by game. Steam’s Proton guidance is specific to Linux and is not a guarantee that a given title will work. Steam Support discusses compatibility and troubleshooting limitations. Steam also says purchases involving emulators or utilities used to run games on unsupported platforms are not supported by Steam Support.

A Store-page comparison is useful for screening a purchase, but it cannot account for every hardware and software combination. Graphics drivers, background applications, and differences between integrated and dedicated graphics can affect results. Steam notes that the variety of configurations makes individual performance difficult to diagnose from generic guidance; listed requirements do not ensure high FPS or smooth performance. Consult Steam’s general guidance, then use the current Store page for the specific game you plan to buy, since requirements and Deck ratings may change.
