How to Check a Prescription Before Taking Your Medication

Compare the pharmacy label with the directions you received. If a medicine or instruction is unclear or different, pause and ask the pharmacist or prescriber to verify it.

Before taking a new or refilled prescription, compare the pharmacy label with the directions you were given. Check the patient name, medicine, strength or dose, form, route if shown, frequency, and duration. If anything is unclear or does not match, pause and ask the pharmacist or prescriber to verify the actual order. Do not guess or change the dose yourself.

How do I know if my prescription was filled correctly?

Read the pharmacy label and compare it with your prescription copy or the directions you received. MedlinePlus advises: “Don’t just rely on your memory – read the medication label every time.” MedlinePlus, U.S. National Library of Medicine, recommends keeping an up-to-date list of medicines and allergies, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, supplements, and herbs, and bringing it to healthcare visits.

A label check can catch a mismatch, but it cannot establish what a prescriber intended if the order itself is ambiguous. When the label and your instructions differ, ask the pharmacy to compare the dispensed label with the actual prescription or order. If the intended directions still are not clear, the pharmacist can contact the prescriber.

What should I check on my prescription label?

  • Patient name: Make sure the prescription is for you.
  • Medicine name: Check the name against your prescription copy or the instructions you received.
  • Strength and dose: Compare the medicine’s strength and the amount you were told to take. These are related but not interchangeable: a tablet’s strength is not necessarily the dose you should take.
  • Dosage form: Confirm whether it is a tablet, capsule, liquid, or another form, especially if that differs from what you expected.
  • Route: Check the route if it is stated, such as by mouth or on the skin.
  • Frequency and duration: Check how often to take it and, if specified, how long to take it or the stop date.
  • Special instructions: Read any additional directions or warnings printed on the label.

The FDA says prescription medicine labeling includes information such as the medicine’s name, dosage form, strength, route, and warnings. The pharmacy label is the practical place to check the directions for your dispensed medicine; FDA labeling information explains what prescription labeling can include.

The medicine looks different—does that mean it is wrong?

Not necessarily. A generic or brand substitution can change a medicine’s appearance. But if the medicine differs from what you have been taking, confirm it with the pharmacy or prescriber before taking it. Do not decide what it is—or whether it is correct—based only on its color, shape, markings, or an online pill image. MedlinePlus guidance on filling a prescription recommends asking the pharmacist or provider when a medicine looks different.

The directions on my prescription look wrong—what should I do?

  1. Set it aside while you check. If the medicine name, dose, frequency, form, route, or duration is inconsistent, unfamiliar, or hard to read, do not guess which direction is correct.
  2. Call the dispensing pharmacy. Ask the pharmacist to compare the label with the actual prescription or order and clearly confirm the directions you should follow.
  3. Ask the pharmacist to contact the prescriber if needed. If the order is ambiguous or the pharmacy cannot resolve the discrepancy from its record, the prescriber must clarify the intended directions.
  4. If a dose is due and you cannot reach them, seek timely advice from an appropriate healthcare professional. Do not improvise a dose or independently alter the instructions.

FDA notes that pharmacists “are experts at interpreting information for patients.” Contacting the pharmacist is appropriate when you need help understanding a label or resolving a discrepancy; see FDA’s guidance on how pharmacists help patients use medicines safely.

Can online drug information verify my individual prescription?

No. FDA and DailyMed drug labeling can provide background about an approved medicine, but it does not confirm that a particular pharmacy transcription matches your prescriber’s individual order. You must also select the correct medicine and formulation when consulting drug information. FDA’s Learn About Your Medicines page and FDALabel search tool are reference resources, not patient-specific prescription checks.
