Instead, send the HTTP request the router expects when that box is checked: usually a form submission containing the checkbox’s exact name=value pair, along with any required hidden fields, session cookies, and submit-button value. The router’s HTML or browser network request determines the details.
Find the request the router expects
Start by fetching the page into a file and saving any cookies it sets:

Note its action and method, then inspect the checkbox, hidden inputs, and submit button. Their names and values define what the server receives. Submit an ordinary form
If the form uses a standard URL-encoded POST, send the checked checkbox pair and the other fields the form requires:

http://ROUTER/FORM_ACTIONReplace each example name and value with the exact values from the page. Use the form’s actual action URL; resolve a relative action against the router page’s address. If the form uses GET, follow that method and its query parameters instead of sending a POST.
Values containing spaces or reserved characters should be encoded rather than pasted raw. You can use --data-urlencode for URL-encoded fields. If the form explicitly declares multipart/form-data, use --form fields instead. See curl’s manual for these options.

Use the checkbox’s actual value
A checked checkbox normally submits its named value, for example enabled=1; the real field might have a different name or value. Copy both exactly, including capitalization. An unchecked checkbox normally contributes no field at all, so don’t invent a value for it. The browser’s form-submission behavior is described in the HTML Standard’s checkbox section.
Keep the session and hidden state
The cookie jar connects the initial page request and the update request: -c cookies.txt saves cookies, and -b cookies.txt sends them. If you logged in separately, preserve and send the authenticated session cookies too. Copy required hidden inputs and the submit button parameter from the form. A router may also require a CSRF token or other state value; its name and login mechanism depend on the router and firmware, so they can’t be inferred from a generic example.

When a form POST is not enough
Some router interfaces update settings with JavaScript rather than submitting the visible form. In that case, use the browser’s developer tools to inspect the network request triggered by checking the box. Reproduce its URL, method, headers, body, cookies, and tokens with curl. The request could use a different endpoint or a JSON body, so a guessed --data form submission may appear to succeed without changing the setting.
Check whether the setting changed
Inspect the response for an error or redirect, then fetch the settings page again using the same cookie jar to see whether the checkbox is now checked. Don’t add -L automatically: first confirm that following a redirect is appropriate for the router’s update flow.

Why a curl request may do nothing
- The form action or HTTP method does not match the page.
- The checkbox name or value was guessed instead of copied from the markup.
- A required hidden field, submit parameter, CSRF token, or session cookie is missing or stale.
- A value contains characters that were not URL-encoded, or the form requires multipart encoding.
- The page uses JavaScript and expects a different XHR endpoint, body, or headers.
There is no universal command that works for every router. A working request depends on the device, firmware, page, authentication state, and the checkbox’s actual form or network request.
