To check a Bitcoin transaction, copy its transaction ID (txid) from your wallet, search for it in a Bitcoin block explorer, and review its status, confirmations, outputs, and fee. An “unconfirmed” result means it has not yet been included in a block; it does not by itself mean the payment failed.
Find the transaction ID in your wallet
Open the sent or received transaction in your wallet’s history and look for “transaction ID,” “txid,” or a transaction-details option. Copy the full ID; it is a unique 64-character string. Some wallets also provide a link that opens the transaction in an explorer. Blockstream’s lookup guide describes where to find it.

Search for the txid in a Bitcoin explorer
- Open a public Bitcoin explorer, such as Blockstream Explorer or mempool.space.
- Paste the txid into the search field and submit it.
- If the service offers more than one network, make sure you are searching the Bitcoin network you used.
Blockstream says its explorer is free to use and does not require an account. A hardware wallet is not needed to inspect a public transaction. See What is Blockstream Explorer?

Read the transaction status and confirmations
An unconfirmed transaction has not been recorded in a block. Once a miner includes it in a block, it has one confirmation; each subsequent block adds another. A confirmed result should show a block association and a confirmation count that grows as more blocks are added. Blockstream’s transaction guide explains how transactions are broadcast and confirmed.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Blockstream describes around six confirmations as a common threshold for treating a payment as final. That is a convention, not a guarantee or a universal rule; the level of confirmation a recipient requires can vary.
Check the amount, destination, and fee
- Outputs: Verify the destination and amount relevant to your payment. A transaction can have multiple outputs, including change returned to the sender.
- Inputs: These identify the coins being spent to fund the transaction. They may not correspond one-to-one with the amount sent.
- Fee: Check the transaction fee and, if displayed, the fee rate. Fee rate is commonly shown in satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB).
Compare the recipient address and amount with the details in your wallet. An explorer displays public transaction data; it is not a private account-history service.

What an unconfirmed or missing transaction means
The explorer shows “unconfirmed”
The transaction is waiting in a node’s mempool, a temporary holding area for transactions that have not yet been included in a block. Miners generally prioritize transactions with higher fee rates, but the displayed fee does not promise a confirmation time. Blockstream notes that its explorer cannot speed up confirmation: “Blockstream cannot speed up the confirmation of your transaction.”

First check that you copied the entire txid correctly and selected the intended Bitcoin network. Another possibility is that the transaction is pending but is not visible in that explorer’s mempool view. Mempools can differ between nodes, so two explorers may not show identical pending transactions. A missing result alone does not establish why the transaction is absent.

A pending transaction disappears
Possible outcomes include confirmation in a block, confirmation of a conflicting transaction that spends the same inputs, or removal under a node’s configured policy. The explorer’s view alone may not identify which outcome occurred. Check the wallet’s transaction details and current chain data before drawing a conclusion.
