You do not have to stop at 80% or unplug at exactly 100%. Apple and Google describe these features as ways to reduce time spent near full charge, not as guaranteed battery-life gains, and neither company publishes a figure for how many years a habit adds. The sections below separate what the official guidance says from the general rules that circulate online.
Should you charge to 100% every time?
Not necessarily. Both Apple and Google have built tools around the time a battery spends close to full charge, and both let you decide how much of that trade-off you want. A charge limit gives you a battery that is held below full for longer, but it also gives you less runtime on the day you need it. Apple’s approach and Google’s approach make that trade-off in different ways.

If you usually plug in at night and unplug in the morning, a feature that finishes charging close to your usual unplug time is the most useful option. If you often leave the house with a partly empty battery, a fixed limit may cost you more than it saves.
Heat matters more than the percentage
Charging warms the battery, and excessive temperature is the condition manufacturers care about most. When a phone gets too hot, software can slow charging, pause it, or limit it. The temperature limits below are set by each manufacturer for its own devices, so they should not be treated as a universal threshold.

In practice, charge the phone on a ventilated surface rather than in direct sun, in a hot car, or under a bedcover where heat builds up. If the phone becomes unusually hot or charging stops, move it somewhere cooler and let it cool before plugging it in again. Do not try to bypass the protection that slows or pauses charging.
Built-in charging controls on iPhone and Pixel
Apple and Google use different features. The table compares what their current official pages describe. Where a page does not give a detail, the cell says so.

Apple’s page on iPhone charge speeds is dated March 30, 2026. Google’s Pixel Help pages were reviewed in 2026 but do not show a publication date, so check the settings on your own device rather than relying on a menu description from any article.
Adaptive Charging on Pixel
Google’s help page describes the setting in this way: “This setting completes charging right before you typically unplug, so your phone isn’t at 100% for a long time.” The feature depends on learning your routine, which is why Google notes the learning period above. Adaptive Charging is available only on eligible Pixel phones.

The 80% limit on Pixel 6a and later
Google presents the 80% limit as a way to prioritize long-term battery health. It suits people who usually end the day with charge left over. If you find the phone stops at 80% when you need a full battery, the limit is the likely reason, and you can turn it off in the settings for that day or permanently.
Choose a charger and cable the phone supports
Charging speed depends on the phone, the charger, and the cable together. Apple recommends a USB-C Power Delivery charger and cable for faster wired charging on iPhone 15 models and later. Google’s Pixel Help page lists USB-C cables and compatible power adapters for Pixel phones. A higher-wattage charger will not speed up every phone, because the phone decides how much power it accepts.

If a charger is missing, damaged, or too slow for your phone, replace it with one that matches the phone’s listed requirements. Check the exact model and the current specification before buying, because the official pages describe categories of accessories rather than specific products.

- The battery is close to full. Charging slows as the battery approaches 100%, so the last part of a charge takes longer than the first.
- The phone is hot. Heat from the environment, from the case, or from the phone itself can slow or pause charging. Google notes that Pixel phones may adjust charging to manage temperatures.
- Demanding apps are running. Processor-intensive use can reduce charging speed. Apple recommends limiting demanding apps while charging when speed matters.
- The charger or cable is limited. A laptop port, a hub, or an accessory that reserves power can deliver less than the phone can accept.
- A charge limit or optimization feature is active. On a Pixel with the 80% limit, stopping at 80% is the intended behavior.
A routine that works for most people
- Turn on your phone’s optimized charging or charge limit, if it has one. Search the Settings app for “charging” or “battery” if you cannot find it.
- Charge on a ventilated surface, away from direct sun, and remove a thick case if the phone runs warm while charging.
- Use a wall outlet with a USB-C charger and cable that the phone supports when speed matters.
- If the phone gets very hot or charging pauses, move it somewhere cooler and let it cool before continuing.
- Check the charging settings after a major software update, because behavior and menu names can change with the software version.
Following these steps is a sound way to reduce heat and unnecessary time at full charge. The official guidance does not establish a precise battery-life gain for any of them, and the right settings depend on your phone model and software.
