If your router keeps one shared name and selects the band automatically, you may not be able to force a band from your phone.
Before changing anything: do you need to select the band?
2.4 GHz is a Wi-Fi frequency band, not a separate setting available on every phone. A router can broadcast 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one network name (SSID), so seeing only one entry in your Wi-Fi list does not mean 2.4 GHz is unavailable. On a combined network, the router and device usually manage band selection.

A device that supports only 2.4 GHz can often join a shared-name network without you changing anything. Google says 2.4 GHz-only devices on its Google Wifi, Nest Wifi, and Nest Wifi Pro systems connect automatically to that band. For a smart-home setup that requires your phone to use 2.4 GHz as well, the setup instructions may require extra steps.

How to make a separate 2.4 GHz network
Router menus differ by model, and an internet provider may customize or restrict them. Use the router’s official app or web management page and follow the model-specific instructions if the labels below do not match.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Save your current Wi-Fi details. Note the existing network name and password, plus the router login details if needed. Saving changes can disconnect the device you are using to administer the router.
- Open the router’s Wi-Fi settings. Sign in through its app or web interface, then look for a section named Wi-Fi, Wireless, or a similar label.
- Look for a combined-band control. Search for Smart Connect, Band Steering, or a setting that uses one SSID for multiple bands. On routers that support it, disable that feature to expose separate band settings. TP-Link’s instructions describe this approach, but menu names and availability vary by model (TP-Link general Wi-Fi guidance; TP-Link Aginet instructions).
- Keep the 2.4 GHz radio enabled. If the router offers separate names, assign a clear name to the 2.4 GHz network, such as your current name followed by “-2.4G.” That suffix is just a helpful naming convention. Save the settings.
- Reconnect to the new network. If your device disconnects, select the new 2.4 GHz name in its Wi-Fi settings and enter the correct password. Use the same password as before only if the router still has it configured for that network.
Once the router broadcasts a distinct 2.4 GHz name, select that SSID on the device that needs the band. Linksys also documents router modes that allow separate network names (Linksys guidance on separating bands).
If you can’t find a band-selection option
The router uses one shared network name
Some systems intentionally keep one SSID for all bands and choose automatically. Google Wifi, Nest Wifi, and Nest Wifi Pro use a shared name, so their users cannot select a separate 2.4 GHz SSID through the normal Wi-Fi network list. A 2.4 GHz-only client should connect on 2.4 GHz automatically (Google Home and Nest Help).

Your router or internet provider controls the setting
If Smart Connect, band steering, or separate-band settings are absent, check the manual for your exact router model or contact your internet provider. The interface may not expose the control, or the provider’s firmware may limit it. Do not reset the router as a first attempt; changing wireless settings is the normal route where the option is available.
You’re setting up a smart-home device
First check whether the device can connect to a shared-band network on its own; a 2.4 GHz-only device may select that band automatically. If the setup process requires your phone to be on 2.4 GHz and you use a Google mesh system, Google suggests moving farther from the router so the phone may switch bands. This is specific to Google’s guidance and is not guaranteed to work on every phone or router.

Should you split the Wi-Fi bands?
| Option | When it can help | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One shared network name with automatic band choice | Routine use, compatible dual-band devices, and many 2.4 GHz-only clients | You may not be able to see or manually select the band. |
| Separate 2.4 GHz network name | Manual band selection or troubleshooting a device that requires 2.4 GHz | Requires router support; changing the name can disconnect devices and may affect roaming or compatibility. Apple recommends using the same network name across bands, so splitting them is best treated as a targeted workaround, not a universal improvement (Apple Wi-Fi router recommendations). |
| Move the phone farther from the router temporarily | Some smart-home setup situations on Google mesh equipment | Band switching depends on device behavior and is not assured. |
What to expect from 2.4 GHz
Choosing 2.4 GHz can improve compatibility and range in some situations, but it does not guarantee better Wi-Fi performance. Microsoft describes 2.4 GHz as generally slower and more congested, with fewer non-overlapping channels, while 5 GHz generally offers faster throughput and less congestion. The 2.4 GHz band generally reaches farther and passes through walls better; household and Bluetooth devices can also add congestion (Microsoft guidance on Wi-Fi and home layout). Results depend on the home, router, and nearby networks.
Do not turn off the 2.4 GHz radio when you are trying to use it: disabling it stops the router from broadcasting that band. If your router supports separate network names, changing the SSID is the setting that makes 2.4 GHz directly selectable.
