To change the name people usually see across Discord, edit your display name. To use a different name in one server, edit your server nickname. Change your username only if you want to change your unique account handle used for identification and friend requests.
Choose the right Discord name to change

A display name does not change the unique username people use to find your account. A server nickname does not change your name in other servers. Discord’s explanation of the distinction is in its New Usernames & Display Names guide.
Change your Discord username
Discord usernames are unique, lowercase account identifiers. The current username system does not use the old four-digit discriminator format, such as #0000; changing your username will not restore it.
On desktop or in a browser
- Open Discord and select the User Settings gear.
- Choose My Account.
- Select Edit beside Username.
- Enter an available username and confirm. Discord may ask for your password.

On iOS or Android
- Tap your profile tab or avatar in the bottom-right corner. Depending on the app release, this may appear as the You tab or You Bar.
- Open Account, then tap Username.
- Enter the new username and save.
The mobile navigation is described in Discord’s You Bar FAQ and its username and display-name guide; labels can vary slightly by app version.
Username rules and limits
- Discord requires email or phone verification to claim a new username.
- A username must be 2–32 characters, unique, and compliant with Discord’s Community Guidelines.
- Usernames are forced to lowercase and are case-insensitive. Allowed characters include Latin letters, numbers, underscores, and periods; consecutive periods are not allowed.
- Discord’s current documentation limits username changes to two per week.

Change your Discord display name
Your display name is the prominent name people generally see in messages, DMs, and servers. A server nickname can take precedence inside its server. Display names can be 1–32 characters and may include spaces, emoji, uppercase letters, and non-Latin characters, subject to Discord’s rules. Discord says you can change a display name whenever you like.

On desktop or in a browser
- Open User Settings.
- Select Profiles.
- Under User Profile, edit Display Name.
- Save your changes.

On mobile
- Tap your avatar or profile area in the bottom-right.
- Tap Edit Profile.
- Edit Display Name and tap Save.

Change your nickname in one server
A server nickname is specific to one server. It overrides your display name there, but does not change your account username or display name elsewhere.

On desktop or in a browser
- Open the server.
- Right-click your name or avatar in the member list or one of your messages.
- Select Change Nickname or, in some versions, Edit Per-server Profile.
- Enter the nickname and save.
On mobile
- Open the server and find your avatar in the member list or a channel where you have posted.
- Tap your avatar, then choose Edit Per-server Profile or the nickname-editing option.
- Enter the nickname and tap Save.
You may also find Edit Per-server Profile by tapping the server name. The exact menu wording and route can vary by client version. Discord explains these options in its Server Nicknames guide and Per-Server Profiles guide.
Permissions for server nicknames
- Change Nickname allows you to change your own nickname, if the server grants you that permission.
- Manage Nicknames allows an authorized member to change other members’ nicknames.
- Role hierarchy still matters: a moderator cannot change the nickname of a member whose role is equal to or higher than the moderator’s.

Remove or reset a server nickname
Open the same nickname or per-server profile control, delete the nickname text, and save. If the menu offers Reset or Clear Nickname, use that instead.

Set a private friend nickname
A friend nickname is a personal label for another user; it does not rename their account and is not visible to them in their Discord app.
- Right-click the other user’s avatar or profile.
- Choose Add Friend Nickname.
- Enter the label and save.

Troubleshoot name changes
| What you see | What to check or do |
|---|---|
| “Change Nickname” is missing or unavailable | You may not have the server’s Change Nickname permission. Look for Edit Per-server Profile if the menu wording differs. If you are moderating someone else, check that their role is below yours and that you have Manage Nicknames. |
| Your new display name is not showing in a server | A server nickname may be overriding it. Edit or clear the nickname in that server. |
| Your username is taken | Choose another variation; usernames must be unique. |
| Discord rejects your username | Check that it has 2–32 characters, uses permitted characters, has no consecutive periods, is lowercase-compatible, and follows Discord’s rules. Confirm your account is verified by email or phone. |
| You cannot change your username again | Discord’s documented allowance is up to two username changes per week. A display name is a separate setting and can be changed whenever desired. |
| The mobile menus do not match | Look for the profile/avatar tab in the bottom-right, then Account for username changes or Edit Profile for display-name changes. The tab may be labeled You or appear as a You Bar. |
| People still see your old or different name | Make sure you changed the intended field: display name for general visibility, username for the unique handle, or server nickname for one server. A server nickname can take precedence over the display name. |
A server nickname changes the label shown in that server; it does not make the account anonymous or hide its username and profile through Discord’s normal identification features.

No. Basic username and display-name changes do not require Nitro. Nitro-related per-server profile customization is separate from changing an ordinary server nickname; see Discord’s Per-Server Profiles guide.
