Your iPhone does not have a separate Bluetooth-name setting. Devices nearby use the iPhone’s general device name. Change it at Settings > General > About > Name; the new name can also appear in AirDrop, Personal Hotspot, iCloud device lists, and on connected computers.
Apple’s current iPhone guide documents this shared-name behavior: Change the name of your iPhone.
Change the name your iPhone shows over Bluetooth
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- Tap Name.
- Delete the existing name using the text field and clear control.
- Type the name you want other devices to see.
- Tap Done.
This changes the iPhone’s device name, which is the identity Apple uses for Bluetooth connections. It does not alter Bluetooth range, pairing security, or the phone’s hardware address.
Which labels change with the iPhone name?
Apple says the device name is used by several services, so this is not a Bluetooth-only rename.

Interfaces operated by third-party manufacturers may not refresh immediately. The Apple documentation establishes which name is used, not a universal update time for every receiver.
Rename headphones, speakers, keyboards, or other Bluetooth accessories
If you meant the name of an accessory listed on your iPhone, use a different menu. The accessory must be connected and must support custom naming.

- Open Settings and tap Bluetooth.
- Find the connected accessory.
- Tap its Info or More Info button.
- Tap Name.
- Enter the new name and finish editing.

Renaming the iPhone does not rename paired headphones, speakers, controllers, or keyboards. Their displayed name can be manufacturer-assigned, stored by the accessory, or controlled by a companion app.

Why the accessory’s Name option is missing
- It is not connected: connect it first; Apple requires an active connection before the rename control appears.
- It uses USB or a wireless dongle: the iPhone cannot edit a name through a connection that is not direct Bluetooth.
- The accessory needs its own app: check the manufacturer’s iPhone app for naming controls.
- Firmware is outdated: install any update offered by the manufacturer, then reconnect.
- It does not support custom names: Apple notes that not every Bluetooth accessory can be renamed.
If appropriate, forget the accessory and pair it again after checking these items. Forgetting removes the existing pairing relationship, so use it as a later troubleshooting step rather than the first one.
If another device still shows the old iPhone name
First verify the change on the iPhone at Settings > General > About > Name. Then try these practical refresh steps:

- Close and reopen the other device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on from that device’s Settings app.
- Disconnect the iPhone and reconnect it.
- If the old entry remains, forget the iPhone on the other device and pair it again.
These steps are general remedies, not a guarantee that every vehicle, computer, or third-party Bluetooth menu refreshes at the same speed. Changing the name does not reset pairings, so a re-pair is only necessary when the receiving device retains a stale entry.

Renaming does not make the iPhone permanently discoverable. For ordinary pairing, open Settings > Bluetooth, turn Bluetooth on, put the accessory into discovery or pairing mode, and select it when it appears. The accessory should be nearby and within its pairing range. Apple’s pairing instructions are at Connect iPhone to Bluetooth accessories.

For a Bluetooth Personal Hotspot connection, turn on Personal Hotspot, open Settings > Bluetooth, and keep that screen open while the other device connects. Apple documents this process at Connect to the Personal Hotspot of an iPhone or iPad.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change only the iPhone’s Bluetooth name?
No. Apple ties the Bluetooth identity to the iPhone’s device name, so use Settings > General > About > Name. That same change can affect AirDrop, Personal Hotspot, iCloud listings, and computer connections.
