Twitch’s official guidance says most software selects an appropriate server automatically, so leave automatic selection on unless you are troubleshooting or have a specific reason to switch. If you do choose manually, start with the server physically closest to you, then test the stream in Twitch Inspector.
What “Twitch server” means
In this context, “server” means the Twitch ingest server: the endpoint that receives your broadcast from your encoder and passes it into Twitch’s network. It is not your Twitch account’s region or a setting that changes which server viewers use for playback.

The ingest endpoint is part of the RTMP destination. Twitch documents the format as rtmp://TWITCH-INGEST-SERVER/app/STREAM-KEY. The server address and stream key are separate parts of that destination; the key identifies or authorizes your stream, so keep it private and do not show it on screen or share it.
Should you change it manually?
Usually, no. Twitch says most streaming software and services select a suitable, usually nearby, ingest server automatically. Keep that automatic choice unless you are diagnosing an unstable connection, your encoder requires a specified endpoint, or you have another concrete reason to test a different one.

If you need to pick manually and are unsure where to start, Twitch recommends the server physically closest to your current location. The nearest server is a sensible first test, not a guarantee: the route your internet provider takes can affect how well a particular endpoint performs.
How to change the ingest server
- Check your encoder’s stream destination controls. Look for a server, ingest, or RTMP destination option in the streaming application or service you use. The control and menu names vary by application and version. Twitch’s current guidance does not establish a version-specific click path for OBS or every other encoder, so use the controls your application actually exposes rather than relying on an assumed menu path.
- Choose automatic selection if available and you do not have a reason to override it. If you are testing a manual choice, select an endpoint physically close to your current location.
- Keep the stream key unchanged unless you are intentionally replacing it. A server change concerns the destination endpoint; do not expose or share your key while editing or testing settings.
- Run a test broadcast. Check the broadcast in Twitch Inspector. Twitch says Inspector can show which Twitch server a broadcast used and flag unstable events; it also supports test streams.
- Compare the result before keeping the change. If the new endpoint does not improve stability, restore automatic selection or test another nearby option. Treat each switch as a measured troubleshooting test, not a guaranteed fix.
Test after a location or ISP change
Your previous endpoint may not be the best choice after you move or change internet providers. Twitch recommends testing the connection after either change. Start with automatic selection; if the stream is unstable, test a physically nearby manual endpoint and review the results in Twitch Inspector.

If changing servers does not fix the problem
A different ingest route can sometimes help with a network issue, but it will not fix every dropped-frame, connection, or playback problem. If Inspector still shows instability, avoid repeatedly switching endpoints without comparing results. Check whether the issue remains with automatic selection and consider other network or broadcast-health causes. Changing the ingest endpoint only addresses the connection from your encoder into Twitch; it does not, by itself, diagnose every part of a stream.
