1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYahoo showing up as your default search engine usually means either your browser’s search settings were changed or an extension/device policy is enforcing it. The fix is straightforward—switch the default search engine to Google and verify it sticks.
This guide covers the main browsers on Windows and macOS, plus Safari on iPhone/iPad and Chrome on Android. Follow the section that matches your device, then run the quick verification test.

Before you start: prerequisites and what counts as “search engine”
You only need a working browser and access to its settings. Most browsers separate “default search engine” from other behaviors like suggestions or shortcuts, so we’ll focus on the setting labeled Search engine or Default search engine.

Prerequisite checklist:
- Know your browser: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari.
- Know your device: Windows/macOS/iPhone/iPad/Android.
- Be signed in (optional): Sync can re-apply settings across devices.
- Keep Yahoo tabs closed: Some extensions inject settings per session.
Check whether Yahoo is set as the default search engine
Before changing anything, confirm the current state:
#1 Best Overall
- Open a new tab.
- In the address bar, type a word like
weather. - Observe the suggestions and where new searches go. If you see Yahoo domains (like
search.yahoo.com) in the results URL, you’ve got the right target.
Then switch the default search engine to Google using the steps below.
Change Yahoo to Google in Chrome
On Chrome, you’ll change the default search engine inside Settings. The option typically appears as Search engine used in the address bar.
Windows, macOS, and Chromebook (Chrome desktop)
- Open Chrome.
- Click More (three dots) in the top-right → Settings.
- Go to Search engine.
- Click Search engine used in the address bar.
- Select Google.
- Close the Settings tab.
If Google isn’t listed, add it: under the same Search engine area, select Manage search engines and site search, then add a Google search entry.

Change Yahoo to Google in Microsoft Edge
Edge uses a similar flow. You’ll switch the default search engine used for searches and the address bar.
Windows, macOS, and Linux (Edge desktop)
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click Settings and more (three dots) → Settings.
- Go to Privacy, search, and services.
- Scroll to Services → find Address bar and search.
- Under Search engine used in the address bar, select Google.
- Close Settings.
If it won’t let you select Google, check whether an extension is overriding settings (see the troubleshooting section).
Change Yahoo to Google in Firefox
Firefox controls default search engine through Search settings. You may also need to adjust search shortcuts if Yahoo is set there.
Rank #2
Windows, macOS, and Linux (Firefox desktop)
- Open Firefox.
- Click Menu (three lines) → Settings.
- Go to Search.
- Find Default Search Engine.
- Select Google.
- Optional: Under One-click search engines, remove or disable Yahoo-related entries if they’re taking precedence.
In some Firefox builds, Suggested searches can still show Yahoo-like sources, but the main results should route through Google once the default is set.
Change Yahoo to Google in Safari (macOS)
Safari’s default search engine is set in its Preferences. This applies to the Search field and address bar (depending on your macOS version).
macOS Ventura, Sonoma, and older macOS versions
- Open Safari.
- Click Safari in the top menu → Settings (or Preferences on older versions).
- Go to the Search tab.
- Under Search engine, select Google.
- Close Settings.
If you use Safari Technology Preview or another Safari variant, repeat the change there too.
Change Yahoo to Google in Safari (iPhone and iPad)
On iOS/iPadOS, Safari uses system settings for search engine. You’ll change it either in Safari settings or device-wide settings.
iPhone/iPad
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Scroll to Safari.
- Tap Search Engine.
- Select Google.
- Return to Safari and test a search.
If you’re using a Google app browser or a different launcher, it might ignore Safari’s setting—use the section for your actual browser.
Change Yahoo to Google in Android browser apps
Android has multiple “browsers” depending on your phone: Chrome is most common, but some devices ship with Samsung Internet or “Browser” variants. Each app can store its own search engine.
Rank #3
Samsung Internet (common on Samsung phones)
- Open Samsung Internet.
- Tap the Menu (three lines) → Settings.
- Tap Search engine (or Privacy and security → Search engine depending on version).
- Select Google.
If you don’t see a “Search engine” setting, check for Address bar or Search settings inside the app.
Default Android Browser (if you’re not using Chrome)
- Open your device’s Browser app.
- Open Settings.
- Find Search engine or Search.
- Set it to Google.
Names vary by vendor. If you tell me the exact browser name (e.g., “Samsung Internet”, “Mi Browser”, “Opera”), I can tailor the clicks precisely.
Change search engine in Google Chrome for Android (quick paths)
On Android, you can change Google Chrome’s search engine through its settings. The location can differ slightly by Chrome version, but the menu path stays consistent.

Confirm the change actually worked
After you set Google as the default, confirm with a quick URL check. This avoids false confidence when a browser suggestion provider still shows Yahoo-like results.
- Open a new tab.
- Type
site:wikipedia.org milky way(or any query). - Press Enter and open the first results page.
- Verify the URL shows google.com (commonly
www.google.com/search).
If it still goes to Yahoo, skip to the troubleshooting section.

If Yahoo keeps coming back: common causes and fixes
When the setting won’t “stick,” Yahoo is usually being re-applied by extensions, sync, malware/adware, or policy management.
Malicious or unwanted extensions
Browser extensions can rewrite the search provider after you change it. Remove anything you don’t recognize.
- Open your browser’s extensions page (commonly: Chrome/Edge → chrome://extensions or edge://extensions).
- Disable or remove extensions that mention search, redirect, toolbar, or “helper” apps.
- Restart the browser.
- Re-apply the Google search engine setting.
If you’re seeing repeated redirects after removal, run an OS-level scan (Windows Security or your antivirus) and re-check the extension list.
Organization or device management policy
On work or school devices, an admin can force Yahoo through Group Policy or Mobile Device Management. In that case, your browser may show Google as an option but revert immediately.
- Try signing out of the browser profile and rebooting.
- Check for managed settings in the browser (varies by browser).
- Contact IT if you’re on a managed device.
Browser search settings vs address bar behavior
Some browsers have separate controls for:
- Default search engine
- Address bar search behavior
- Search suggestions
Yahoo can appear through suggestions even after the results engine is corrected. Re-check the final results domain after clicking a suggestion.
Multiple profiles or signed-in sync
If you changed the search engine on one profile but you’re signed into the same browser on another device, sync can overwrite your choice.
Best Value
- Switch to the correct browser profile.
- Temporarily disable sync for settings (if available) or wait for sync to settle.
- Then set Google again and verify immediately.
In Chrome, profile icons at the top-right make it easy to accidentally edit a different account.

If a policy or locked-down browser blocks editing, you still have practical options.
- Use Google directly: visit
https://www.google.comand bookmark it. - Change per-search: in some browsers, you can select a different search engine for that query only.
- Install a browser-safe extension: only if you trust it and it’s verified. Avoid search “helper” add-ons from unknown publishers.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing search engine in one browser but testing in another (e.g., Safari vs Chrome).
- Fixing Search engine but forgetting Address bar and search settings in Edge.
- Removing an extension but not restarting the browser (some keep injected behavior until a restart).
- Ignoring multiple browser profiles.
- Assuming suggestions equal the search provider—verify by checking the results URL.
FAQs
Why does Yahoo appear when I type in the address bar, even after I set Google?
You likely changed one setting but not the address bar behavior, or suggestions are coming from another provider. Confirm by clicking a result and checking whether the URL is google.com/search.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can Yahoo be “hard-coded” by malware?
Yes. If an extension or adware component keeps resetting your search provider, you may see Yahoo return within minutes. Remove suspicious extensions and run an OS security scan before re-checking browser settings.
Will changing it on my computer also change it on my phone?
It can, if browser sync is enabled for settings. Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge can sync preferences across signed-in devices, so check sync status if your change keeps getting overwritten.
What if Google isn’t listed as an option?
Add Google as a search engine (in Chrome/Edge) or choose Google from the default search engine dropdown in your browser. If it still doesn’t appear, you may be in a managed profile or missing required permissions.
Does this affect my bookmarks or saved preferences?
Usually, no. Changing the default search engine only affects where searches go. Bookmarks remain intact unless an extension or policy is actively modifying browser data.

Bottom Line
To change Yahoo to Google, set Google as your browser’s default search engine—then verify by running a test search and checking that results open on google.com. If Yahoo keeps returning, the most common culprits are extensions, sync across profiles, or device management policies.
If you tell me your exact device and browser (e.g., iPhone Safari, Windows Edge, Android Chrome), I’ll tailor the steps to the exact menu labels you’ll see.
