Enter your current password, enter the new password twice, then select Change Password. This is different from resetting a password you have forgotten.
Change a known Mac login password

Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then select Users & Groups. Scroll down the sidebar if the setting is not immediately visible.

Select the info button next to the user account whose password you want to change.

For your own account, choose Change. Type your current password in Old Password, then enter the new password in New Password and again in Verify.

Optionally add a password hint, then select Change Password.
Apple says a hint may appear after three consecutive incorrect password entries at the login window, or when you select the question-mark control there. It is optional, so avoid putting the password itself or other sensitive information in the hint. (Apple Support, “Change the login password on Mac”.)

Know which password you are changing
The Mac login password unlocks the computer when you turn it on or wake it from sleep. Apple describes it as “the password you enter to unlock your Mac when you turn it on or wake it from sleep.” It is not the Apple Account password you use for Apple services. Changing one does not mean you have changed the other. (Apple Support, “Change the login password on Mac”; “What is an Apple Account?”.)
If you cannot remember the current password
If you cannot sign in, use the forgotten-password reset path rather than the known-password change form in System Settings.

At the login window, look for a password reset option and follow the prompts.

If those options do not complete the reset, start macOS Recovery and follow Apple’s reset instructions. Recovery may offer the built-in
resetpasswordutility if the earlier prompts do not resolve the issue.Rank #4

The available prompts depend on how the Mac is set up. They may ask for the Apple Account previously used with that Mac, a FileVault recovery key, or another verification method; no single option is guaranteed to appear on every Mac. See Apple’s “If you forgot your Mac login password” instructions.

Changing your own password versus resetting another user’s
A standard user or administrator can change their own password when they know it. Resetting another user’s password is an administrator task in Users & Groups. If the Mac asks for an administrator’s credentials and you do not know them, Apple advises contacting the person who set up the Mac for help. (Apple Support, “Change the login password on Mac”; “Reset a user’s login password on Mac”.)

Check FileVault recovery access
FileVault recovery may be configured to use an Apple Account or a generated recovery key. If your Mac uses a recovery key, copy it accurately and store it somewhere separate from the encrypted startup disk. Apple warns that files and settings may be lost permanently if you forget the login password, cannot reset it, and also lose the recovery key. That is a warning about losing access to the required recovery options, not an inevitable result of every password change or reset. (Apple Support, “Use a recovery key for FileVault”.)
