Use the password-change control for the main account, enter a new password, confirm it, and apply the change. Additional FTP accounts are changed from the same screen, using their own row.
Confirm your site supports this method
Hostinger’s FTP password instructions apply to web hosting and cloud hosting sites. Check your hosting type before following the menu steps, because the same account label can mean different things on different products.

- Web or cloud hosting (PHP/HTML site): the steps below apply.
- Hostinger AI Builder websites: these are not file-based, so FTP password management does not apply. There is no FTP account to change.
- Agency hosting: Hostinger’s guidance describes agency hosting as SFTP-only and points to a separate remote-access guide. The FTP Accounts steps below do not apply directly.
Change the main FTP account password
The main account is the FTP login created with the site’s hosting. Follow these steps in Hostinger’s dashboard:

- Select Dashboard beside the PHP/HTML website you want to change.
- Open Files, then FTP Accounts.
- For the main FTP account, select the password-change option. Hostinger’s support article labels this action “Forgot your FTP password?”, and the button on your screen may be worded differently.
- Enter a new strong password, or use the password generator. Enter the password again to confirm it.
- Apply the change and store the new password in a password manager or other secure location.
Hostinger states that the new password is not shown again in the dashboard after you apply it. If you do not save it, you will need to set another one.

Change an additional FTP account password
Additional FTP accounts have their own password controls. They are often used for a specific person or task, and some can be limited to a particular directory, so confirm the account before you change it.

To change an additional account, scroll through the account list, find the exact username, select its password-change action, enter and confirm the new password, and apply it. Check the username against the client you use to connect, since two accounts can look similar in a long list.

Understand which password you are changing
Several Hostinger passwords are related, and changing one can affect another. Confirm which credential you need before you start.

The FTP steps above do not change it.
- Hosting-plan password: according to Hostinger’s hosting-password guidance, changing the hosting-plan password also changes the default FTP password. Additional FTP accounts are still changed from FTP Accounts.
- Main FTP password and SSH: by default, the main FTP password is also the SSH password. Changing the main FTP password therefore changes SSH access to the same value.
- SSH-only password: if you want SSH to use a different password from FTP, set it separately through SSH Access.
If you use SSH scripts, deployment tools, or a terminal session, update them when you change the main FTP password, or set a separate SSH password first.

Update your FTP client after the change
Changing the password in hPanel does not update any software on your computer. Open your FTP client and replace the saved password for the same site and username. Hostinger’s connection guide uses FileZilla as its example client, but any FTP client that stores a password for a server connection will need the same update.

- Confirm that you changed the password for the correct website. A site with several accounts can have more than one similar username.
- Confirm that the username in the client matches the account you changed, especially for additional accounts.
- Check that the client saved the new password. Many clients keep a site profile that overrides the global password field.
- Confirm the hosting type. AI Builder sites have no FTP password to manage, and agency hosting uses SFTP-only access through a separate guide.
- If you use SSH, check whether the password you entered belongs to the main FTP account or to a separate SSH password.
If the password change succeeded and the client still fails, the problem is usually a saved profile rather than the account itself.
