On an Android phone, open Google Wallet, swipe to the card you want, tap it, then choose Details → Make default for tap to pay. This changes the card Wallet uses for contactless payments. It does not change which wallet app Android uses for NFC payments.
Change the default card in Google Wallet
- Open Google Wallet on your Android phone.
- Swipe through the cards at the top and tap the card you want to use by default.
- Tap Details.
- Tap Make default for tap to pay.
Google says the first payment method you add to Wallet becomes the initial default for contactless payments. To check which card is currently selected, swipe through your payment methods, tap Edit card order, and look for the contactless symbol beside the default card. Use a different card for just one purchase
You do not have to change the saved default for a single payment. Open Wallet, swipe to the card you want to use, then tap the payment terminal with your phone. Google Wallet Help.
Set Google Wallet as Android’s NFC payment app
If the phone opens another wallet, change the phone’s payment-app setting. This is separate from choosing a card inside Google Wallet: the app setting decides which wallet handles NFC payments, while the card setting decides which payment method that wallet uses.

- Search Settings for NFC.
- Open Contactless payments, then Payment default.
- Select Google Wallet and confirm.

What must be ready for tap to pay
Changing the default does not by itself enable contactless payments. The phone needs NFC support with NFC turned on, Google Wallet selected as its payment app, and a supported payment method that is ready to use. - Card setup or verification is incomplete: Check for a message above the card in Wallet and follow the prompts.
- The card is suspended: Google directs users to contact the bank.
- NFC is off or unavailable: Turn NFC on in Settings if available; the phone must support NFC for contactless payments.
- The bank declined setup: Card and issuer support are required. Contact the card issuer if setup is declined. A physical card’s contactless feature does not by itself establish that it is supported in Google Wallet. Google Wallet Help: Find supported payment methods.
- The wrong card is charged: Check the contactless symbol in Edit card order, or select the intended card manually before a one-time payment.
Special cases: store cards, watches, and the Wallet website
Store or private-label credit cards
Google says a store or private-label credit card can be the default only when it is the only card added to Wallet. Removing other cards to meet this condition can affect your other Wallet payments, so consider that before changing your card list. Google Wallet Help.
Google Wallet on a smartwatch
Watch menus differ from the Android phone workflow. For Wear OS 3.0, Google documents selecting the card and choosing Make default for tap to pay. On Wear OS 2.0, the path is More → Set as default card. Google Wallet Help: Make contactless payments with your smartwatch.

Payment methods on the Google Wallet website
The Wallet website manages payment methods associated with your Google Account; it is not the documented control for setting your phone’s contactless default. A payment method added on the website may still need to be added in the app for device payments. Removing a method from an account or device can affect online availability differently.
