You can also configure Edge to ask for a save location for each download.
Change Edge’s default download folder
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more (the three-dot button), then select Settings.
- Select Downloads.
- Under Location, select Change.
- Choose the folder you want and confirm your selection in the folder picker.
These are the current instructions for Chromium-based Edge on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft’s documentation distinguishes this interface from the older Edge Legacy interface, so older instructions may use different labels. Microsoft’s steps for changing Edge’s download location
Choose a folder that will be available
Edge can use a folder on another internal drive, a project folder, an external drive, a network location, or a cloud-synced folder. Consider the trade-offs before setting one as the default:
- Another internal drive: can keep large downloads off the system drive, but make sure the drive remains available.
- External drive: useful for files you want stored there, but downloads may fail or be inaccessible if the drive is disconnected.
- Network folder: convenient for shared storage, but depends on network availability and your account’s permissions.
- Cloud-synced folder: may make files available across devices, but syncing can use local disk space and may create conflicts or upload sensitive files.
- Project-specific folder: keeps related files together, though you may want to change the destination when switching projects.
For fewer interruptions, choose a folder that exists, is writable by your Windows account, has enough free space, is normally connected, and is not routinely removed by cleanup tools. Choose a location you can back up if the files matter.

Make Edge ask where to save each download
In Settings and more > Settings > Downloads, turn on the option to ask where to save each file before downloading. The exact wording can vary by Edge release or language.
A fixed folder is quicker when you download files to the same place repeatedly. Asking each time adds a prompt, but is useful when downloads belong in different folders. When you choose a destination in that prompt, that individual download may go somewhere other than the default shown under Location.

Check the location and test it
- Return to Settings and more > Settings > Downloads.
- Read the path shown under Location. Microsoft gives
C:Users[your name]Downloadsas an example of a Windows path. Find where Edge is saving downloads - Download a harmless, small file and confirm it appears in the folder you selected. If the per-download prompt is enabled, check the destination chosen in that prompt too.
Changing the folder does not reorganize older files
The Edge setting controls the destination for downloads going forward; it is not a file-migration tool. If you want files in the former Downloads folder moved, use File Explorer to move or copy them separately. This is also different from changing the Windows Downloads folder itself: changing Edge’s setting redirects Edge downloads, while changing Windows’ folder location can affect the operating system and other applications.
If Edge still saves somewhere else
- Recheck the displayed path. Open Settings > Downloads and confirm the path under Location. If it is wrong, select Change and choose the intended folder again.
- Check the prompt’s choice. If Edge asks where to save each file, review the location selected for that particular download.
- Confirm which application is saving the file. A website may open or hand a file to another application or download manager; Edge’s download-folder preference may not control a file saved by that separate application.
- Check that the destination is reachable. Connect the external drive or network, then confirm the folder opens in File Explorer and that your account can write to it.
- Check available storage. If a download fails, choose a folder with sufficient free space. A local folder in your Windows profile is a useful test destination.
- Try a small test download. If the path is correct and the folder is available, use a harmless small file to check the result.
- Restart Edge if its interface appears out of date. Reopen Downloads settings and check the path again.
- On a work or school device, check with your administrator. Organizational policies may limit available settings; avoid unsupported registry or configuration changes.
Avoid protected system folders unless you understand their access restrictions. If a selected folder is unavailable or permissions are unclear, choose it again through Change rather than relying on a path you have not verified.
