Windows 10 lets you place the taskbar along any edge of the screen: bottom, top, left, or right. The quickest method is to unlock it and drag an empty section to the edge you want. You can also choose the position from Taskbar settings.
Move the taskbar by dragging it
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar.
- If Lock the taskbar is checked, select it to unlock the taskbar.
- Click and hold a blank section of the taskbar—not a pinned app or open-window button.
- Drag it to the top, left, right, or bottom edge of the screen.
- Release the mouse button when the taskbar docks there.
- Optionally, right-click it again and select Lock the taskbar to prevent accidental movement or resizing.
Microsoft documents this unlock-and-drag behavior for Windows 10 in its taskbar customization guide. A locked taskbar cannot be moved or resized.
Change the location from Taskbar settings
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- Find Taskbar location on screen.
- Choose Left, Top, Right, or Bottom. The taskbar should move immediately.
The label can vary with the Windows build, language, or administrator restrictions. If the selector is missing, use the checks in the troubleshooting section below.
Which edge should you choose?
| Position | When it may suit you |
|---|---|
| Bottom | Windows 10’s default and the most familiar layout. |
| Left or right | A vertical taskbar can preserve vertical screen space and may work well on ultrawide displays or window-heavy workflows. Icon and label layout changes with the available width and your taskbar settings. |
| Top | Useful if you prefer controls near the top of the screen or are accustomed to top-mounted menu bars. |
These are preference-based choices; Microsoft does not establish one edge as universally faster or more productive.

Restore the taskbar to the bottom
Open Taskbar settings, set Taskbar location on screen to Bottom, and it will return to the default edge. Alternatively, unlock the taskbar and drag an empty section to the bottom, then lock it again if desired.
Why the taskbar will not move
It is locked
Right-click an empty area and clear Lock the taskbar. Locking is the most common reason dragging does nothing.

Start the drag from a blank portion of the taskbar. Dragging a pinned application, open-window button, notification icon, or system-tray control will not move the dock.
The taskbar is hidden
With auto-hide enabled, move the pointer to the current screen edge to reveal it, then use Taskbar settings if grabbing it is difficult. Auto-hide changes visibility; it is separate from the lock setting.

On managed Windows 10 editions, administrators can prevent movement with the TaskbarNoRedock policy or lock taskbar controls with TaskbarLockAll. Microsoft lists the Group Policy path as User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar; the related policy settings are documented in the Microsoft Learn taskbar policy guide and policy CSP reference. Windows 10 instructions are not Windows 11 instructions
This guide is specifically for Windows 10’s traditional taskbar. Windows 11 uses a redesigned taskbar and has not historically exposed the same supported edge-position controls. Check the Windows version before troubleshooting and use version-specific guidance instead; Microsoft’s current Windows Insider documentation discusses ongoing Windows 11 taskbar changes: Windows Insider Blog.
What changes when you move it?
Moving the taskbar changes its screen edge; it is not a reset or deletion operation. Your pinned applications are not removed by this procedure. Multi-monitor behavior is controlled separately: Windows includes settings for whether taskbars appear on all displays, but the standard location selector should not be treated as an independent position control for every monitor.

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Existing PCs continue to run, but standard support—including free security fixes, technical assistance, and Windows Update software updates—has ended. The taskbar controls described here remain part of Windows 10, subject to the version and policies on your PC. See Microsoft’s taskbar documentation for the supported controls.
