For a one-time countdown, hold the TV button on the remote, select Sleep Timer in Control Centre, and choose a time range.
Change Apple TV’s regular sleep delay
- Open Settings on Apple TV.
- Select General.
- Select Sleep After.
- Choose the option you want. The setting controls when Apple TV turns off after a period of inactivity.

Set a one-time sleep timer
Use Sleep Timer when you want Apple TV to sleep after a countdown rather than changing its usual inactivity setting.

- Select Sleep Timer.
- Choose a time range.
To cancel it, open Sleep Timer again and select Cancel Timer. Apple’s Control Centre settings guide

Sleep After, Sleep Timer, or screen saver?
| Control | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep After | Sleeps Apple TV after inactivity; it is the regular setting. | Change how long Apple TV generally waits before sleeping. |
| Sleep Timer | Starts a one-time countdown to sleep. | Set a single sleep time without changing the regular delay. |
| Screen Saver > Start After | Sets how long Apple TV is idle before the screen saver appears; it does not set when the device sleeps. | Change when the idle screen saver starts. |
To change the screen saver delay, go to Settings > Screen Saver > Start After. Apple’s screen saver settings guide
If Apple TV still seems to turn on or off unexpectedly
Check the TV or receiver’s HDMI-CEC behavior
If your television or A/V receiver supports HDMI-CEC, Apple TV can turn on when the TV or receiver turns on or its HDMI input is selected, and turn off when the TV or receiver turns off. That behavior is separate from the inactivity delay. Apple’s Apple TV 4K guide

Check whether the Apple TV is managed by an organization
On a supervised Apple TV, an administrator may apply the Prevent Apple TV from going to sleep restriction, which prevents users and tvOS from putting the device to sleep. Apple lists this restriction as supported starting with tvOS 13; support can vary among device-management services. If the setting is unavailable or sleep is blocked on a managed device, contact the administrator. Apple’s device-management restrictions guide
