To change the sound for WhatsApp calls on a Samsung Galaxy, open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Notifications > Notification Categories > Call Notifications > Sound, then choose a tone. WhatsApp message alerts use separate controls, and Samsung’s menu can vary by device variant and software version.
First, identify which WhatsApp sound you want to change
WhatsApp call ringtones and message notification tones are separate settings. Use Call Notifications for incoming WhatsApp calls. Use Message notifications or Group notifications for chat alerts. These settings do not change the ringtone for ordinary cellular calls.

Change the WhatsApp call sound in Samsung settings
- Open Settings on your Galaxy phone.
- Tap Apps, then choose WhatsApp.
- Tap Notifications, then Notification Categories.
- Choose Call Notifications.
- Tap Sound and select the tone you want.
This route is documented by Samsung Australia for Australian-variant Galaxy devices. Other regions, software versions, or app configurations may show different names or may not expose the same category.

Use WhatsApp’s own call ringtone setting
If you do not see the Call Notifications category, or want to change the general WhatsApp call tone from within the app, open WhatsApp > Settings > Notifications. Under Calls, tap Ringtone, select a tone, and save or apply the change. WhatsApp documents this Android route in its notification settings help.

Set a tone for one person or group
Open the person’s or group’s chat, tap the name at the top, then open Notifications. Configure the message or call tone there, as applicable. WhatsApp says group calls use the default WhatsApp Calls ringtone, which cannot be customized.
Change WhatsApp message alert sounds
In WhatsApp, open Settings > Notifications, then adjust the tone under Message notifications or Group notifications. For a single chat, open it, tap the person’s or group’s name, and select Notifications to set that chat’s message tone.

Samsung also separates message alerts from the phone’s call ringtone. Its US guidance directs users to Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sound for device notification sounds; see Samsung’s ringtone and notification sound instructions.
Use your own audio file as a notification tone
- Open Samsung’s My Files app and copy or move the audio file to Internal storage/Notifications.
- If there is no Notifications folder, create one in internal storage.
- Return to the relevant notification sound setting and select the file if it appears.
Samsung describes this method in its instructions for setting an audio file as an app notification sound. A file may need to be available to the device as a local audio file; a sound available only through a streaming service is not a stored ringtone file. The sound choices shown for a WhatsApp call category can depend on the phone’s configuration.

If the sound does not change
- Notification Categories is missing: Try WhatsApp’s in-app call ringtone setting. Samsung’s WhatsApp-specific instructions apply to Australian variants, and category availability can differ by Galaxy variant, software version, or app configuration.
- The selected tone does not play: Check that WhatsApp notifications are enabled and that the Call Notifications category has not been disabled or silenced. WhatsApp notes that device notification settings can override its in-app settings; see its Android notification troubleshooting guidance.
- Your custom file is not listed: Confirm that it is in the internal storage Notifications folder, creating the folder if necessary, then reopen the sound picker.
- You meant the regular phone ringtone: That setting is separate. Open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone. Samsung says a custom ringtone must be a song file stored on the phone; tracks from streaming services cannot be selected as ringtone files.
