How to Change Video Formats: Remuxing, Conversion, and Compatibility

A video’s extension does not tell the whole compatibility story. Learn how containers and codecs differ, when remuxing is enough, and when re-encoding is necessary.

To change a video file’s format, first find out whether the problem is its container or the codecs inside it. If the video and audio streams already work with your target device, you may only need to remux them into a different container. If the target cannot decode those streams or required features, you will need to transcode—re-encoding the media, which can affect quality. Check the target’s requirements, choose the least destructive suitable method, and play the finished file before replacing the original.

What does “video format” mean?

A video file is a package containing one or more media streams. The container—such as MP4, MKV, or WebM—organizes those streams and may also hold subtitles, chapters, and other information. The video and audio streams are encoded separately using codecs, such as H.264 for video or AAC for audio.

The file extension is a clue to its container, not a complete description of its contents. An .mp4 file does not guarantee a particular video codec, audio codec, subtitle format, or universal compatibility. HandBrake’s documentation explains that containers wrap and organize tracks for playback, and that supported features differ between containers. Its recommendations, including AAC for better compatibility on most players in its MP4 discussion, are guidance for HandBrake’s supported workflows—not a guarantee for every device. Should you remux or transcode?

Approach Use it when What it changes Important trade-off
Remuxing (streamcopy) The target supports the existing video and audio codecs, but needs a different container or stream selection. Copies encoded streams into a different container without decoding and re-encoding them. No re-encoding quality loss, but the operation can fail if the target container cannot accommodate the streams or features. It cannot apply filters.
Transcoding (re-encoding) The target does not support a source codec or required stream feature, or you need to change media settings. Decodes and re-encodes one or more media streams, then packages them in a container. Can create a more suitable output, but re-encoding is not inherently lossless.

FFmpeg calls copying encoded packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding “streamcopy.” It can change the container, select streams, or modify container-level metadata. Since the media is not re-encoded, this is fast and avoids re-encoding quality loss; however, the target container must support the streams and features. FFmpeg’s streamcopy documentation VLC’s documentation, by contrast, describes its conversion operation as re-encoding audio, video, and subtitle streams before muxing them into a container. How to convert a video to MP4 or another format

  1. Inspect the source. Identify its container, video and audio codecs, subtitle streams, resolution, and frame rate. A media-information view in your player or converter can help; for repeatable inspection and stream selection, FFmpeg is another option.
  2. Check the destination’s requirements. Look up the receiving device, application, or platform’s supported containers, codecs, resolutions, frame rates, audio channels, and subtitle features. Requirements vary; do not assume that an extension alone will make a file compatible.
  3. Try streamcopy if only the container is the issue. If the destination supports the source streams, remuxing may be sufficient. Confirm that the destination container supports every stream and feature you need.
  4. Transcode only if necessary. If the destination cannot handle a source codec or feature, choose compatible video and audio codecs and a suitable container. Use a resolution and frame rate the destination accepts; changing these settings may alter the output.
  5. Play through the output before replacing the source. Check picture, sound, duration, synchronization, subtitle behavior, frame rate, and audio channels. Keep the original until the converted copy works for the intended use.

MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is a broadly compatible starting point in the cited NASA PDS4 guidance. That statement appears in a specific PDS4 context; it is not a guarantee for every device or service. NASA says that if a video application does not support H.264 and/or AAC encoding, HandBrake may be used to convert most video formats to MP4. NASA PDS4 video guidance

Which software should you use?

HandBrake: a guided graphical workflow

HandBrake is a graphical transcoder that uses FFmpeg libraries and can open many common, web, camera, and professional source formats. It is useful when you want a visual workflow and preset options. It does not directly accept every editing project: if your video exists only inside a consumer editor’s project, export it from that editor to a common video file first. HandBrake documentation

Inspect a preset rather than assuming it preserves the source unchanged. HandBrake’s presets can downscale resolution, limit peak frame rate, enforce audio settings, or omit discrete surround sound when a preset includes only stereo. Its documentation describes Fast 1080p30 as a beginner starting point and broadly compatible; its general presets use MP4 and target broad device and software support. Those descriptions apply to HandBrake’s presets, not to every device or every conversion. HandBrake official presets

FFmpeg: precise control and repeatable jobs

FFmpeg is a command-line option for selecting streams, remuxing, converting, and repeating a workflow. Its documentation explains when streamcopy can avoid re-encoding. The codecs available depend on the installed FFmpeg build and the libraries enabled in it, so a command that works in one build may not be available in another. VLC: a documented transcoding option

VLC’s 3.0 documentation gives examples of re-encoding streams and muxing them into MP4, MKV, or OGG, with parameters for bitrate, frame rate, sample rate, and audio channels. These are version-specific instructions for a transcode workflow, not proof that VLC’s operation is a quality-preserving remux. Confirm the selected streams and output settings. VLC 3.0 conversion documentation

Can you change MKV to MP4 without losing quality?

Sometimes. If the video and audio streams inside the MKV are supported by the target MP4 workflow, and the features you need are compatible, remuxing can put those streams in an MP4 container without re-encoding them. That avoids quality loss caused by re-encoding, but it does not guarantee that every stream or feature will work in the new container or on the destination device.

If a codec or required feature is incompatible, converting to suitable streams requires transcoding. That re-encodes media and should not be described as inherently lossless. If a remux fails, use the error and destination requirements to determine which stream or feature is incompatible rather than assuming that every MKV-to-MP4 conversion requires re-encoding.

What video format works on your device?

There is no single format combination guaranteed to work on every phone, television, editor, or platform. Check the current support information for the exact destination and compare it with the source’s streams and features. A recommendation for a broadly compatible combination can be a useful starting point, but it is not a substitute for the destination’s requirements.

Converting VHS and other analog video

VHS, Beta, Video8/Hi8, LaserDisc, and other analog sources cannot be converted directly by ordinary file-conversion software: they must first be digitized. Use capture hardware and software suited to the source’s connections and your computer, and export a common digital video file. You can then open that file in a converter such as HandBrake if you need a different container or codec. HandBrake’s documentation names Blackmagic Design Intensity as an example of a hardware recording device; that example is not a current compatibility list, so check that your chosen equipment supports your source and computer.
