In Windows 10 and Windows 11, open Control Panel > System and Security > Change User Account Control settings, choose a notification level, then select OK. For most people, keep the default setting: it warns when apps try to make changes without prompting for every Windows setting change you make yourself. Avoid Never notify; Microsoft says it is not recommended because of security concerns. Microsoft Support: User Account Control settings.
Change the UAC notification level
- Open Control Panel.
- Select System and Security.
- Select Change User Account Control settings.
- Move the slider to the notification level you want.
- Select OK to save. Windows may ask you to approve this change; if your account is not an administrator, an administrator may need to enter credentials or approve it.
These steps are documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The setting may not be editable on every device, especially if it is managed by an organization. Microsoft Support: User Account Control settings.

Choose the right slider level
The slider controls when Windows notifies you and how it handles the prompt. A quieter setting means fewer interruptions, not that the underlying change is safer.

| Always notify | When apps try to install software or change the device, and when you change Windows settings. | Windows dims the desktop and waits for a response before other tasks continue. Microsoft recommends this for people who often install new software or visit unfamiliar websites. |
| Notify me only when apps try to make changes to my computer (default) | When apps try to install software or change the computer, but not when you change Windows settings yourself. | Windows dims the desktop and waits for a response. This is the default and suits people who want warnings about app-initiated changes without prompts for their own settings changes. |
| Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer (do not dim my desktop) | App-initiated install or device changes, but not your own Windows setting changes. | Windows does not dim the desktop or pause other tasks while waiting. Microsoft recommends this only if dimming takes a long time on your computer; otherwise, use one of the options above. |
| Never notify (Disable UAC) | Neither app-initiated changes nor your own Windows setting changes. | No notification, desktop dimming, or wait for a response. Microsoft does not recommend this option because of security concerns. |

What a UAC prompt protects—and what it asks you to do
User Account Control is a Windows security feature for actions that need administrator-level permissions. It gives you an opportunity to approve or deny an elevation request; an approved action proceeds with the highest available privilege, while declining prevents that action. UAC is enabled by default. Microsoft Learn: User Account Control overview.
- Approve a prompt only if you started or otherwise expect the named program or system change.
- If you do not recognize the request or did not expect it, decline it rather than lowering UAC to avoid future prompts.
If you cannot change the slider
- Check the account: Changing UAC settings requires administrative privileges. A standard user may need an administrator to approve the change.
- Check whether the device is managed: Work or school administrators can configure UAC centrally using management tools and policies. Do not try to bypass an organization’s restrictions; ask its administrator if a change is needed.
Microsoft documents configuration through Intune, the Policy CSP, Group Policy, and registry settings, so the consumer slider is not necessarily available for independent changes on a managed device. Microsoft Learn: User Account Control settings and configuration.

Standard accounts and administrator policies
For managed environments, Microsoft identifies using a standard user account as the more secure approach. A standard user can perform administrative work by providing valid administrator credentials through the built-in UAC elevation component. Microsoft Learn: How User Account Control works.

Administrators also have policy controls such as Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode and Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation. These are policy settings, not additional positions on the consumer slider; Microsoft says disabling Admin Approval Mode reduces operating-system security. Their defaults and behavior can vary with Windows version and management state. Microsoft Learn: User Account Control settings and configuration.
