The correct command for an existing world
Vintage Story exposes tool durability as a world-level multiplier. On a running server, use:

Where to enter it
- Dedicated-server console: paste the command into the server process console.
- Administrator chat: run it in-game from an account with server-administration permission.
The command is case-sensitive. Type toolDurability exactly as shown. In wiki syntax, square brackets commonly indicate a value to replace; they are not characters to type. Entering /worldconfig toolDurability [2] is therefore different from entering /worldconfig toolDurability 2 and may fail.
What a successful change means
The setting is global for the world: it changes the durability multiplier applied to tools rather than selecting one item or one player. A value of 2 is the straightforward choice when you want tools to last twice as long under the documented interpretation. The command is intended for changing an existing world’s world configuration and is the direct route when you need the result without editing the pre-creation configuration file.

The documentation establishes the range and the examples above, but it does not define a separate gameplay explanation for every number in that range. In particular, do not assume that 0 has a useful “infinite durability” meaning simply because it is accepted as the lower bound. Treat unusual values as configuration experiments and check the result in the exact Vintage Story version running on your server.

Setting durability before creating a world
If the world does not exist yet, put the setting in the server configuration file before world creation. The relevant object and property are:

}The official server-configuration example shows the default value as the string "1". Keep the quotation marks and place the property inside the existing WorldConfiguration object. If that object already contains other settings, add a comma after the preceding property as required by JSON syntax; do not create a second top-level WorldConfiguration object.
Finding the file
The dedicated-server guide places serverconfig.json in the server data directory. The exact filesystem path depends on how and where you installed the server, but the file name and its role are the same. Open the copy belonging to the server instance that will create the world, not a similarly named file from another installation.

Editing procedure
- Stop the server cleanly so it is not writing the configuration while you edit it.
- Make a backup copy of
serverconfig.json. - Open the file in a text editor that preserves plain UTF-8 text.
- Locate
"WorldConfiguration". - Add or change
"toolDurability": "2"inside that object, preserving commas and braces. - Save the file and start the server.
- Create the new world and verify the setting in a short test session.
Stopping the server and keeping a backup are operational safeguards: a malformed comma, quote, or brace can prevent the configuration from loading. The file method is the pre-creation route documented for world settings. For a world that already exists, use the administrator command instead of expecting a later edit to rebuild that world’s settings.

For the built-in setting, the decision is simple: use the command when the world already exists; use serverconfig.json when you are preparing a new world. A mod is a separate compatibility decision, not a prerequisite for the built-in multiplier.
What this setting changes—and what it does not
It is a multiplier for all tools
The official description calls toolDurability a tool-durability multiplier and uses the example that 2 gives all tools double durability. That wording describes a world-wide rule. The published setting does not document a built-in server multiplier that targets only axes, only pickaxes, or a single material tier. If you need per-tool exceptions, this setting alone is not that system.

It is not a command for editing one item
Vintage Story’s item JSON reference defines an item’s durability as an integer maximum-use value. When an item reaches zero uses, the item disappears. The reference also distinguishes an item’s current durability from that maximum: current wear is stored separately as a treeAttribute.
That distinction matters when troubleshooting. The world setting changes the global gameplay multiplier; it is not a command that writes a selected tool’s saved remaining uses. The available documentation does not explicitly promise how a live multiplier change recalculates tools that are already partly worn. Do not tell players that every existing item will be retroactively refilled or recalculated unless you have verified that behavior for the exact game version and server state.
It does not replace ordinary item durability data
Changing the multiplier does not redefine the item JSON field itself. An item’s maximum-use definition and its saved current-wear attribute remain separate concepts. This is why inspecting an item’s data may not show a simple “durability 2” value after you run the command: the world rule and the item’s stored state are different layers.

The documentation gives the command and range, but it does not provide a universal test protocol for every release. A cautious administrator can still verify the configuration with a controlled procedure:
- Record the current value you intend to use and make a world backup according to your normal server policy.
- Run the command from the dedicated console or administrator chat, using the exact capitalization.
- Use a fresh, ordinary tool in a safe test area rather than consuming a valuable tool from a player.
- Compare how long the tool lasts with the behavior expected from the selected multiplier, using the same block or action for each trial.
- Ask players to report whether newly acquired tools behave as expected, while keeping separate notes about tools that were already worn before the change.
This approach distinguishes a command or permission problem from an interpretation problem. It also avoids promising retroactive behavior that the published documentation does not establish.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Unknown command” or no effect
- Confirm that you entered the leading slash in administrator chat. In a dedicated-server console, use the console’s normal command format; some consoles do not require the slash.
- Check capitalization:
/worldconfig toolDurability 2is the documented spelling. - Remove square brackets, quotation marks, and explanatory text from the command. The value should be a plain number such as
2. - Verify that the account has administrator permission or that you are using the correct server console.
- Make sure the command is being sent to the intended server instance and world.
The JSON file prevents startup
- Stop the server and restore the backup you made before editing.
- Check every comma, quotation mark, opening brace, and closing brace around
WorldConfiguration. - Ensure the value is written as
"2"in the configuration format shown by the official example, rather than inserting an extra comment or trailing comma. - Confirm that you edited the active server’s data directory, not a different installation.
The setting was added after the world already existed
The documented file route applies world settings before world creation. If the world is already in use, switch to /worldconfig toolDurability X with administrator access. Do not assume that adding a line to serverconfig.json later will migrate an existing world’s configuration.
Players disagree about old and new tools
Separate the global multiplier from saved item wear. Maximum durability is defined in item data, while current durability is stored as a separate attribute. Because the documentation does not specify retroactive recalculation for live changes, test newly obtained tools and already-worn tools separately and describe only the behavior you actually observe on your server version.
Using a mod instead of the built-in setting
The ConfigureEverything listing advertises configuration for tool durability and identifies a server/client ModConfig location. That can be useful when a server needs options beyond the built-in global multiplier, but it introduces another compatibility layer.
- The listing identifies its latest release as targeting Vintage Story
1.22.0. - That target may be outdated for a later Vintage Story release.
- Check the mod’s current compatibility information and configuration syntax before installing it on a production server.
- Back up the world and server configuration before adding or removing a mod that changes gameplay rules.
Do not install a mod merely to perform the built-in change described in this guide. Start with /worldconfig toolDurability X or the pre-creation JSON property; consider a mod only when its additional behavior is required and its version support is confirmed.
