Microsoft Teams uses time zones to display meeting start times, chat activity timestamps, and calendar details. When your time zone is wrong, you’ll see meeting times shifted—sometimes by exactly 1 hour due to daylight saving time (DST), or by more if your region is misdetected.
This guide walks you through how to change the time zone behavior in the Teams app across Windows, macOS, web, Android, and iOS/iPadOS. It also covers what you can and can’t control depending on whether you’re the meeting organizer or a participant.

How Microsoft Teams decides which time zone to use
Teams doesn’t rely on a single setting in all cases. Instead, it often uses a combination of your device time zone, your Microsoft 365/Exchange account settings, and time zone metadata attached to meetings and invites.

- Meeting times shown in the calendar: typically display in the organizer’s time zone conversion to your account/device context, using the time zone stored with the meeting.
- Your own event scheduling defaults: are heavily influenced by your mailbox and calendar settings (Exchange/Microsoft 365), plus the UI context you’re using (Teams calendar vs Outlook).
- UI timestamps (chat activity, message time): usually follow the time zone associated with your account and/or your device.
- DST changes: if your device or account rules are stale, you can get a consistent 1-hour offset.
That’s why “change time zone in Teams” sometimes means changing your device time zone, and other times it means changing your Exchange/Microsoft 365 mailbox time zone (which Teams reads).
Prerequisites before you change anything
- Confirm your current time zone: check your system clock and time zone name (examples: Eastern Time, Pacific Time, Central Europe).
- Know your Microsoft account type: Teams for work/school accounts are tied to Microsoft 365/Exchange settings. Personal accounts (if present) behave differently.
- Update the app: use the latest Teams version on your device. Time zone bugs get fixed over time.
- Be careful with meeting invites: if you’re rescheduling a meeting, you may need to edit the event in Outlook/Exchange so the time zone metadata updates correctly.
Change time zone in Teams (Windows desktop)
On Windows, Teams generally follows your account and system time zone. The most reliable method is to set the Windows time zone correctly, then verify your Teams calendar.
- On your Windows PC, open Settings.
- Go to Time & language → Date & time.
- Set Time zone to the correct region (e.g., (UTC-05:00) Eastern Time).
- Turn on Set time automatically (recommended) and Set time zone automatically if you want Windows to keep it current.
- Close and reopen Microsoft Teams.
- Check your Calendar and open one scheduled meeting to confirm the displayed start time matches your location.
If Teams is still showing the wrong time after your Windows change, you likely need to update the mailbox time zone in Microsoft 365/Exchange (see troubleshooting and meeting-specific sections).

On macOS, Teams reads the time zone from the system settings and uses it for UI context. Ensure macOS is set correctly first, then refresh Teams.
- Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS).
- Go to General → Date & Time.
- Set the correct Time Zone (or keep Set time zone automatically enabled).
- If prompted, unlock settings with your admin password.
- Quit and restart Microsoft Teams.
- Verify by checking the Teams Calendar meeting start time.
For organizer scenarios, you may still need to adjust meeting scheduling settings in Outlook/Exchange if the event itself was created with the wrong time zone.
Change time zone in Teams (web browser)
In Teams on the web (for example, in Microsoft Edge, Chrome, or Firefox), the browser session still depends on your account settings and your system/device time. Fix the system time zone and then test in a fresh browser session.
- Change your computer time zone using your OS settings (Windows/macOS steps above).
- Close all Teams tabs.
- Open a new tab and go to https://teams.microsoft.com.
- Sign in and open Calendar.
- Open a meeting and confirm the displayed start time.
- If the wrong time persists, hard refresh the page (browser refresh ignoring cache).
Browser cache and long-lived sessions can make Teams appear “stuck” on the old time zone context.

Change time zone in Teams (Android)
On Android, Teams usually follows the device time zone. Update the device time zone, then relaunch the Teams app.
- Open your phone’s Settings.
- Tap Date and time.
- Enable Set time zone automatically (recommended) or choose the correct Time zone manually.
- Make sure Set time automatically is enabled.
- Force close Teams: open App info → Force stop.
- Reopen Microsoft Teams and check the Calendar.
If you recently traveled and your device time zone changed automatically, confirm the meeting display matches your current local time after relaunch.
Change time zone in Teams (iPhone and iPad)
On iOS/iPadOS, Teams typically mirrors the system time zone. Correcting the device time zone is usually the quickest fix.
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap General → Date & Time.
- Enable Set Automatically and confirm Time Zone is correct.
- If needed, disable automatic timezone and set the correct Time Zone manually.
- Fully close Teams (swipe it away) and reopen Microsoft Teams.
- Verify the meeting time in Calendar.
If you’re organizing meetings, you may need to ensure the event you create in Outlook/Teams uses the correct intended time zone.

The right “time zone change” depends on your role:
- Participants: you usually can’t change the organizer’s meeting time zone metadata after the invite is created, but Teams should convert the meeting time into your local/account context.
- Organizers: you can create/edit the meeting so the time zone is stored correctly. If you created it with the wrong time zone, the safest fix is editing/rescheduling the meeting.
Organizer: schedule the meeting with the correct time zone
For work/school accounts, the most dependable workflow is to schedule in Outlook (desktop/web) because Exchange stores the event time zone metadata.
- Open Outlook on the web or Outlook.
- Create or open the meeting you’re scheduling.
- Find the Time zone control (it may show as an option near the date/time picker).
- Select the correct time zone (example: Pacific Time (US & Canada)).
- Save and send the updated invite.
- In Teams, confirm the updated meeting time from Calendar.
Teams is then reading the corrected Exchange event and converting it for participants.
Participant: fix conversion issues by correcting your account/device context
If you didn’t create the meeting, focus on making sure Teams can convert correctly.
- Correct your device time zone (Windows/macOS/Android/iOS steps above).
- Sign out of Teams and sign back in (or restart the app).
- Open the meeting invite details to verify it shows the expected start time.
- If it’s still wrong, your mailbox time zone setting may be off—follow the troubleshooting checklist.
When Teams still shows the wrong time: troubleshooting checklist
If you followed the platform steps and Teams still displays incorrect meeting times, work through these checks in order.
1) Check your device time zone and DST rule
A common failure mode is a 1-hour shift caused by daylight saving time. Confirm the time zone name matches your current location and the device DST setting is current.
- Example symptom: all meetings are consistently one hour early/late.
- Fix: update OS time settings and restart Teams.
2) Refresh the Teams session
Teams can keep an old context in memory. Restarting the app forces it to re-read time zone context.
- Desktop: quit Teams completely, then relaunch.
- Web: hard refresh the browser tab.
- Mobile: force stop, then reopen.
3) Verify your Microsoft 365/Exchange mailbox time zone (work/school accounts)
For many organizations, the mailbox time zone controls how events and timestamps are rendered. If your device is correct but Teams still doesn’t match, you may need to update your mailbox settings.
Recommended Free Tools
- Sign in to Outlook on the web.
- Open Settings (gear icon).
- Go to Calendar → View settings or Events and invitations (wording can vary by tenant).
- Find the setting for Time zone or Display time zone.
- Select the correct time zone for your location.
- Save changes, then reopen Teams and verify the meeting time.
If you don’t see these options, it may be locked by your organization or managed by admin policies. In that case, contact your Microsoft 365 admin or IT helpdesk.
4) The meeting invite may have been created with the wrong time zone
If only one meeting is wrong (not all meetings), the event metadata likely uses an incorrect time zone.
- Ask the organizer to open the meeting in Outlook and check the Time zone field.
- They should update and re-send the invite (or reschedule) so participants get corrected metadata.
5) Clear cache (web) or reinstall (mobile/desktop) if caching is stubborn
Browser cache issues can keep stale UI data around. If you’ve already restarted and refreshed, you can attempt cache clearing.
- In the browser, clear cache for the site hosting Teams (teams.microsoft.com).
- Sign out and sign back in.
- If on mobile and the app is persistent, reinstall Microsoft Teams after confirming you’re signed in properly.
6) Test on a different platform
This is a fast diagnostic technique. If Teams shows correct time on iPhone but wrong time on Windows, you’ve narrowed the problem to the Windows account settings, the device time zone, or the Teams cache on that platform.
- Compare: Windows desktop vs iPhone Teams calendar.
- Compare: web Teams vs desktop Teams.
Common mistakes that cause time zone issues
- Manually changing time without fixing time zone: adjusting the clock time but leaving the wrong time zone can create a double error.
- Forgetting DST: setting a time zone offset manually (instead of using the correct region/time zone name) often breaks during DST transitions.
- Assuming Teams has a single “time zone” toggle: there usually isn’t one universal toggle that overrides meeting metadata stored in Exchange.
- Rescheduling in Teams without updating the organizer metadata: depending on your environment, you may still need Outlook/Exchange to correct the event time zone.
- Not refreshing the client: after changing settings, Teams may need a restart to reflect changes.
Quick comparisons: device time zone vs Teams meeting time zone
Use this table to decide where to focus.
| What’s wrong | Most likely cause | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| All meetings are consistently off | Your device or mailbox time zone is wrong | OS time zone (Windows/macOS/Android/iOS) and mailbox time zone (Outlook/Exchange) |
| Only one meeting is wrong | The organizer scheduled it with an incorrect time zone | Organizer edits meeting time zone in Outlook/Exchange and re-sends invite |
| You moved to a new country/region | Device auto-detection didn’t update or DST mismatch | Set correct region time zone, restart Teams, verify calendar |
| Desktop and web show different times | Cached session or platform-specific settings | Hard refresh web, restart apps, compare device time zone |
FAQs
Is there a direct “change time zone” setting inside Teams?
Teams itself usually doesn’t provide a single universal time zone switch that overrides everything. For most scenarios, you fix time zone behavior by correcting your device settings and/or your Microsoft 365/Exchange mailbox time zone, especially for work/school accounts.
Why are my Teams meeting times off by exactly 1 hour?
A consistent 1-hour shift often points to daylight saving time (DST) handling. Update your OS time zone and ensure automatic time/DST is enabled, then restart Teams.
What if I’m traveling and Teams keeps showing home time?
Make sure your device is set to the correct time zone (or automatic time zone updates are enabled). Then restart Teams and verify the calendar. If it still shows the wrong conversion, your mailbox time zone may not match your current location.
Can I change the time zone of an existing Teams meeting invite I didn’t create?
You can’t reliably change the organizer’s meeting metadata from your side. The organizer should edit the meeting in Outlook/Exchange with the correct time zone and send an updated invite.
Does Teams on web use the same time zone rules as desktop apps?
Broadly yes, but practical behavior can differ due to caching and how sessions are refreshed. If web shows correct time and desktop doesn’t (or vice versa), restart the affected client and hard refresh web.
Bottom Line
To change time zone in the Teams app, start with the most dependable lever: correct your device time zone (Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone/iPad), then restart Teams. For work/school accounts—or if one meeting remains wrong—update the mailbox time zone in Microsoft 365/Exchange and/or fix the meeting time zone at the organizer level in Outlook.
If you tell me your platform (Windows/macOS/web/Android/iOS) and whether you’re the meeting organizer or a participant, I can narrow it down to the exact best path.
