On an iPhone, the practical way to put a custom picture on your YouTube launch icon is to create a Shortcut that opens YouTube and add that shortcut to the Home Screen with a photo as its icon. It creates a separate Home Screen entry; it does not replace the installed YouTube app’s own icon. On Android, the result depends on the phone’s launcher, Android version, and whether YouTube and that launcher support icon customization.
What you can and cannot change
There are three different kinds of “icon change” that are often confused:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A custom picture for one YouTube launch entry: On iPhone, this is done with a Shortcut. The picture belongs to the Shortcut on your Home Screen.
- System-wide styling: iPhone Home Screen controls can enlarge icons or apply dark, automatic, clear, or tinted styling. These affect the presentation of many or all Home Screen icons, not just YouTube.
- The installed app’s actual icon: Replacing the icon inside YouTube’s installed app bundle is a different feature. Apple’s developer documentation describes alternate app icons as something the app developer must build into an app. A user-created Shortcut does not rebrand the installed app.
On Android, a launcher may offer per-app icon changes, icon packs, or themed icons, but there is no single menu path that works on every phone. The launcher and the app both matter. Google’s Android guidance says an app must provide a monochrome layer for a launcher to apply a themed icon, so themed coloring cannot be assumed for every app.
iPhone: add a custom YouTube picture with Shortcuts
This is the documented method for using a photo from your library as a YouTube-looking Home Screen icon. It works by making a new Shortcut whose action opens YouTube.

Before you start
- Have the YouTube app installed and signed in if your normal use requires an account.
- Save the image you want to use in the Photos library. A square image generally gives the most predictable visual result, but Shortcuts can use a photo from the library regardless of where it came from.
- Keep the original YouTube icon somewhere accessible, such as another Home Screen page or the App Library, because the new icon is an additional launch entry.
Build the YouTube-opening Shortcut
- Open Apple’s Shortcuts app.
- Tap the + button to create a new shortcut.
- Choose Add Action, search for Open App, and select that action.
- Tap the app field in the action, search for YouTube, and select it.
- Use the shortcut’s name field to give it a recognizable name, such as YouTube or My YouTube. A clear name helps you identify it later if you edit or delete it.
The action should now read as an instruction to open YouTube. Tapping the Shortcut inside the Shortcuts app is a useful quick test before you place it on the Home Screen.
Add the Shortcut to the Home Screen and choose the photo
- Open the Shortcut’s details. Depending on the iOS version, this is done from the shortcut’s information or sharing controls.
- Select Add to Home Screen.
- In the Home Screen preview, tap the icon shown beside the shortcut name.
- Choose the option to select a photo, then pick the image from your Photos library.
- Adjust the displayed crop if the preview offers one, enter the label you want under the icon, and tap Add.
Apple Support’s Shortcuts User Guide states: “When you add a shortcut to the Home Screen of your iOS or iPadOS device, you can also use a photo from your photo library as the icon.” The resulting Home Screen tile is the Shortcut, not a replacement for YouTube’s installed icon.
Test and arrange the two entries
Tap the new picture-based tile. It should run the Open App action and take you to YouTube. If both the original YouTube icon and the Shortcut remain on the same page, move the original to another page or leave it in the App Library. Do not delete the app itself unless you intend to uninstall YouTube; deleting the original app removes the target that the Shortcut is supposed to open.

If you do not need a unique image, iPhone Home Screen customization can coordinate YouTube with the rest of your icons. Apple’s Home Screen controls include icon-size choices and appearance options such as Dark, Automatic, Clear, and a color Tint, with labels that can vary by iOS release.
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the icons enter editing mode.
- Open the Home Screen customization control, commonly labeled Edit and then Customize.
- Choose the icon size or appearance option you want, then apply the change.
This route changes the Home Screen’s presentation broadly. It does not let you assign a different photograph only to YouTube, and it does not alter YouTube’s installed app artwork. For one specific picture, use the Shortcut procedure instead.
How the iPhone Shortcut differs from an alternate app icon
Apple distinguishes a user-created Home Screen Shortcut from an alternate app icon. An alternate app icon is an app feature that the developer has to configure in the application itself. Unless YouTube exposes such a setting, a user cannot turn the installed app’s icon into an arbitrary photo through iOS settings.
The Shortcut method also explains why you may see two YouTube-related tiles: one is the real app and one is a Shortcut that launches it. The photo is attached to the latter. Removing the Shortcut removes only that Home Screen entry; it does not uninstall YouTube.

Android: check the launcher before changing anything
Android customization is not standardized across all manufacturers, launchers, and OS versions. Your phone’s Home app may support a custom image, an icon pack, a per-app icon editor, themed icons, or none of these. The names and locations of controls therefore differ.
Look for the launcher’s icon controls
- Return to the Home Screen and touch and hold the YouTube icon.
- Check the menu for labels such as Edit, Customize, Change icon, or an icon-pencil symbol.
- If no such option appears, touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen and open Home settings, Wallpaper and style, Themes, or a similarly named launcher settings page.
- Look for Icons, Icon style, Icon pack, or Themed icons.
- Apply the available option, preview the result, and confirm. If YouTube is not listed, that launcher does not provide the requested per-app change through that screen.
These labels are signposts rather than a guaranteed sequence. A manufacturer can place the setting elsewhere, rename it, or omit it entirely. Consult the support instructions for your phone’s current launcher if the Home Screen menus contain none of these controls.
Understand themed icons
A themed icon normally applies the launcher’s color treatment to an app icon rather than replacing it with any photograph you choose. Google’s Android developer guidance explains that an app’s adaptive icon needs a monochrome drawable layer for a launcher to generate a themed version. Consequently, a compatible launcher alone does not guarantee that YouTube will receive a themed icon; the app and launcher implementation must support the feature together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen Android shows no custom-image option
If the long-press menu and launcher settings contain only general icon-size, shape, or theme controls, your current setup may not support assigning an individual photo to YouTube. That is a platform limitation of the launcher/app combination, not evidence that the YouTube installation is damaged. You can still use any built-in theme or icon-pack option the launcher provides, but do not assume that a generic Android instruction will expose a custom-photo field on your phone.
iPhone and Android options compared
| Goal | iPhone | Android | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use a specific personal photo | Create a YouTube-opening Shortcut and add it to the Home Screen with a photo from Photos. | Only possible if the current launcher exposes a custom-image or equivalent icon editor. | On iPhone, the photo belongs to a separate Shortcut entry; Android behavior depends on the launcher. |
| Apply dark, clear, or tinted styling | Use Home Screen customization controls. | Use the launcher’s theme or themed-icon controls if available. | Usually affects multiple icons rather than only YouTube. |
| Replace the installed YouTube icon itself | Not achieved by a user Shortcut; an alternate app icon would have to be provided by the app developer. | Not a universal Android setting; support depends on the launcher and app. | The installed app remains installed with its own supported icon behavior. |
| Purchase required | No purchase is required for the Shortcut method; it uses Shortcuts and an existing photo. | No physical purchase is required; customization, when available, is a software feature. | Availability, not hardware, is the main limitation. |
Requirements, limits, and ongoing maintenance
The iPhone workflow requires only the installed YouTube app, Apple’s Shortcuts app, and an image in Photos. It does not require an icon-pack subscription, a separate design app, a new phone, or a physical accessory. If you replace or remove the photo in your library later, the shortcut’s Home Screen artwork is still a separate setting, but you may need to edit the shortcut if you want a different picture.
The YouTube app must remain installed for the Open App action to work. Updating YouTube normally does not mean you must rebuild the shortcut, because the shortcut points to the app rather than copying its internal icon. If you uninstall YouTube, the shortcut cannot open it until the app is installed again.

On Android, the key requirement is a launcher that exposes the desired control. An icon pack may offer a coordinated set rather than a personal photograph, while themed icons generally recolor supported artwork. A launcher update or a change to the phone’s default Home app can move or remove these options, so record which launcher is active before troubleshooting.

Edit, move, or remove the custom entry
To change the iPhone picture, edit the existing shortcut and use Add to Home Screen again with the new image, or remove the old Home Screen entry and add a replacement. A long press on the picture tile lets you remove that tile from the Home Screen without deleting YouTube. The shortcut itself can remain in the Shortcuts app for later editing.
If you want the standard YouTube tile back, leave the original app on a Home Screen page or bring it out of the App Library. You can keep both entries, move one to another page, or remove only the shortcut. Be precise about the command shown in the long-press menu: removing an app and removing a Home Screen entry have different results.
On Android, undoing a launcher change usually means reopening the same icon, theme, or icon-pack control and selecting the default artwork. The exact reset command is launcher-specific. If you switch back to the phone’s original launcher, customizations made by another launcher may no longer appear, even though YouTube itself has not changed.
Design and privacy tips
- Use a high-contrast image with the subject near the center. Home Screen icons are small, and the system may crop the edges or apply a mask.
- A square source image with extra margin is easier to recognize than a wide image whose important details sit at the edges.
- Choose a short label such as “YouTube” or “YT” so the tile is easy to identify. The label does not change what app opens.
- Remember that a personal photo used as an icon is visible to anyone who can see your Home Screen. Avoid an image that reveals information you would not want displayed publicly.
- Do not install an unofficial modified YouTube build merely to obtain a different picture. The documented iPhone method and supported launcher features do not require it.
Troubleshooting
The iPhone tile still shows the standard YouTube artwork
Check that you tapped the icon in the Add to Home Screen preview and selected a photo, rather than merely changing the Shortcut’s internal color or glyph. If the original YouTube tile is the one you are tapping, move it aside and test the newly added Shortcut tile.
The Shortcut opens the Shortcuts app instead of YouTube
Edit the Shortcut and verify that its action is Open App with YouTube selected. A Shortcut with no action, or with a different action, cannot launch the intended app. Run it once from inside Shortcuts to confirm the action before adding another Home Screen tile.
You deleted the wrong icon
Removing a Home Screen Shortcut removes that tile, while removing the YouTube app uninstalls the application. If YouTube disappeared, restore it through the App Store and then recreate the Shortcut. If only the picture tile disappeared, the app itself may still be present in the App Library.

The photo is cropped or difficult to recognize
Choose an image with the important subject near the center and enough margin around it. The Home Screen tile is small and may mask or crop the source photo. Preparing a square version in your photo editor can make the subject easier to see, but the exact crop depends on the system preview.
Android has no “Change icon” command
Open the launcher’s Home settings or Wallpaper and style area and search for icon, theme, icon pack, or themed-icon controls. If those controls are absent, the current launcher may not support per-app replacement. Switching launchers can change the available features, but launcher behavior and compatibility vary, so verify the new launcher’s own documentation before relying on it.

YouTube is not receiving Android themed colors
The launcher may support themed icons while the installed YouTube version does not provide the required monochrome layer, or the feature may be disabled in the current theme. Use the launcher’s normal icon or icon-pack option if one is available; themed coloring is conditional, not universal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to avoid
- Unofficial modified YouTube apps: They are unnecessary for the documented iPhone Shortcut workflow and are not required to use Android launcher features.
- Sideloading or rooting solely for an icon: These add installation and security risks without solving a limitation that may simply belong to the launcher.
- Assuming a Shortcut is an app replacement: The iPhone Shortcut is only another way to launch YouTube. Keep the installed app available and understand which tile you are editing.
- Confusing tint with a custom image: Dark, clear, automatic, and tinted styles alter the overall icon presentation; they do not assign a unique photograph to YouTube.
Choose the right method
- Choose the iPhone Shortcut when you want one specific picture and accept that it will be a separate Home Screen entry.
- Choose iPhone Home Screen customization when a coordinated dark, clear, enlarged, or tinted look is enough.
- Choose the Android launcher controls when your phone exposes an icon editor, icon pack, or themed-icon setting.
- Stop at the built-in controls when your launcher offers no per-app image option; there is no universal Android sequence that can create one.
Quick decision checklist
- Are you using an iPhone? If yes, use Shortcuts for one custom picture or Home Screen customization for a broad style.
- Are you using Android? Identify the active launcher first, then look for its icon, theme, or icon-pack controls.
- Do you need the installed YouTube icon itself changed? A Shortcut will not do that on iPhone, and Android has no universal setting for it.
- Are you willing to keep two launch entries? The iPhone photo method requires the separate Shortcut entry, while the original app can stay in the App Library.
- Is a photo unavailable on Android? Use the launcher’s supported theme or icon-pack option rather than installing an unverified modified app.
These checks prevent the most common mistake: expecting a system-wide tint or a Shortcut tile to behave like a developer-provided alternate app icon.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use any photo for the YouTube icon on an iPhone?
Yes. When you add the YouTube-opening Shortcut to the Home Screen, Shortcuts lets you choose a photo from your Photos library. The image becomes the Shortcut tile, not YouTube’s installed app icon.
Will changing the iPhone Shortcut icon change YouTube for everyone?
No. It changes only that Home Screen entry on your iPhone. Other devices and the installed YouTube app continue to use their normal supported icon.
Can I remove the original YouTube icon after creating the Shortcut?
You can remove the original icon from the Home Screen and leave YouTube in the App Library, but do not delete the app itself. The Shortcut needs the installed app to open.
Best Value
Why do I see two YouTube icons on my iPhone?
One is the installed YouTube app and the other is the Shortcut with your custom photo. Move the original to another page or the App Library if you want only the picture tile visible.
Does Android let me set a personal photo as the YouTube icon?
Only some launchers provide a per-app custom-image editor. Android menus and capabilities vary by manufacturer, launcher, and version, so there is no guaranteed sequence for every phone.
What are Android themed icons?
Themed icons apply the launcher’s color treatment to supported app artwork. They generally do not replace an icon with an arbitrary photograph, and the app must provide the required monochrome layer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do I need to pay for an app or accessory?
No purchase is required for the documented iPhone Shortcut method. Android customization, when available, is a software feature of the launcher, theme, or icon pack; a case or other physical accessory cannot change an app icon.
Is rooting or sideloading necessary?
No. Those steps are unnecessary for the iPhone Shortcut workflow and are not required for supported Android launcher controls. They can add security and maintenance risks.
The Bottom Line
For a custom YouTube picture on iPhone, create an Open App Shortcut, add it to the Home Screen, and select a photo. Treat it as a separate launch tile, not a replacement for YouTube’s installed icon. On Android, inspect the active launcher’s icon and theme settings: support for custom images or themed icons depends on that launcher and on YouTube’s icon support.
