The level-seed value in server.properties is read when Minecraft creates a world. Changing it later does not regenerate explored terrain, move structures, or alter existing chunks. To use a different seed, stop the server, back up the current world, set the new seed, and make the server generate a new world directory.

The exact reset differs by edition and server software. Java servers use the folder named by level-name; Paper, Spigot, and Purpur also keep Nether and End data in separate folders. Bedrock stores the level beneath worlds/. Your old buildings, inventories, chests, and placed blocks remain in the old world files unless you deliberately restore or copy them through a separate process.

What changing a Minecraft server seed actually does
A seed is the input Minecraft uses to create terrain and other world-generation results. The server reads level-seed during world creation, then saves the resulting chunks in the world directory. Once those chunks exist, editing the property does not recalculate them. The server continues loading the already-generated world, so the landscape you see stays the same.
That means a seed change is a world reset, not an in-place setting change. A new seed produces a new world directory and a fresh set of chunks. The old directory is where the previous world’s terrain, player data, builds, containers, and dimension data live.

Several third-party server guides describe this creation-only behavior consistently. The official server.properties reference lists the setting, but the timing of when it is consumed is not explained as explicitly in the available excerpt. Treat the operational rule as follows: set the seed before the replacement world is created, and reset or rename the old world so the server has somewhere new to generate.
Before you touch any files
A reset can be irreversible if you delete the only copy of the world. Complete these checks while the server is stopped or before making any destructive change.
- Confirm the edition. Java and Bedrock use different world-directory layouts. Do not apply the Bedrock path to a Java installation or vice versa.
- Identify the active level name. In
server.properties, note the value oflevel-name. That value normally matches the main world directory. If it has been customized, the folder will not necessarily be calledworld. - Take a complete backup. Copy the active world directory and, on Java server software that uses separate dimension folders, copy the Nether and End directories as well. Store the copy outside the server’s live data directory and label it with the date and the old seed if you know it.
- Record the current configuration. Save a copy of
server.propertiesand note plugins, datapacks, gamerules, and other settings you may want to reproduce. These settings are separate from the terrain seed. - Plan downtime. Do not edit or remove world files while the process is running. A live server can still write region, player, or level data and leave a partial or corrupt reset.
If you only want to test a seed, changing level-name to a new name is usually safer than deleting the existing folder. It leaves the old world on disk so you can return to it or remove it later after verifying the replacement.
Java Edition: create a world with a new seed
These steps apply to a Java dedicated server. The file names are the standard names used by the server and by common Java server implementations; a hosting panel may present the same files through an editor rather than a file manager.
1. Stop the server completely
Use the server console’s normal stop action or the control panel’s stop button and wait until the process has exited. A closed game window or disconnected client is not enough: the Java process must no longer be writing world data.
2. Back up the current world
Copy the directory named by level-name. If that directory is world, the main folder is commonly world/. On Paper, Spigot, and Purpur, also copy world_nether/ and world_the_end/ when those folders exist. Keep the backup outside the location from which the server will generate the replacement. Do not overwrite the backup with a later empty folder.

Open the file in a plain-text editor and locate the property:
level-seed=
Put the desired value after the equals sign. A numeric value can be entered directly. A word or other text value is also accepted; Minecraft converts that text into a seed value. To request a random seed, leave the value blank:
level-seed=742938475
or:
level-seed=mountain-basin
Do not add explanatory text on the same line. Save the file after editing. If a control panel has a dedicated “Seed” field, it should write the same level-seed property, but verify the resulting file when possible.

4. Make the server use a new world directory
You have two supported choices. Pick one before starting the server.
Option A: delete the old world folders
Remove the directory named by level-name after the backup is safely stored. On Paper, Spigot, or Purpur, remove the matching Nether and End folders as well:
world/ world_nether/ world_the_end/
Only remove folders that belong to this server and this level name. If your level is called survival-2026, the corresponding directories may be survival-2026, survival-2026_nether, and survival-2026_the_end. Deleting the folders frees the original name, so the next startup can create a fresh world under the same level-name.
Option B: change level-name to a new name
Instead of deleting anything, edit the property to a directory that does not already contain a world:
level-name=new-seed-test
Leave the old directory in place. This approach keeps the previous world available as an on-disk backup and makes it easier to switch back by restoring the old level-name. Make sure the new name is unique; if a directory with that name already contains a generated world, the server may load it instead of creating one from the new seed.

Start the server normally. Because the selected world directory does not exist as a generated level, Minecraft creates it using the new level-seed. The first startup can take longer while terrain is generated. Join only after the console reports that the server is ready, then inspect the spawn area and explore enough terrain to confirm that this is the replacement world.
The new world will not contain the old world’s builds or containers. They remain in the backup or in the old directory if you used the rename method.
Bedrock Edition: reset the level and seed
Bedrock dedicated servers organize worlds below a worlds/ directory. The procedure is similar, but the folder you remove is located differently.
1. Stop and back up
Stop the Bedrock server and wait for the process to close. Copy the complete active world folder before deleting anything. A default level name shown in server guides is Bedrock level, but your installation may use another value.

2. Locate the folder that matches level-name
Open the server’s worlds/ directory and find the folder whose name matches the level-name value in server.properties. For a default installation, that may look like:
worlds/Bedrock level/
The match matters more than the example name. Do not remove every folder in worlds/ if the server contains multiple levels.
3. Set the new seed
Edit server.properties and enter a numeric or word seed after level-seed=. Leave the value blank only when you want Minecraft to choose a random seed. Save the file while the server remains stopped.
4. Delete the active Bedrock level folder
Remove the folder matching level-name from worlds/, keeping the backup elsewhere. Bedrock does not use the Java-style world_nether and world_the_end folders described for Paper, Spigot, and Purpur, so do not invent those paths in a Bedrock installation.

5. Restart and verify
Start the server and wait for world creation to complete. The replacement level is generated with the new seed. If the old terrain appears, stop again and check that you removed or renamed the correct folder and that level-name points to it.
Java and Bedrock reset choices compared
| Decision | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Seed setting | level-seed in server.properties |
level-seed in server.properties |
| World location to reset | The directory named by level-name |
worlds/ plus the directory matching level-name |
| Extra dimension folders | Paper, Spigot, and Purpur commonly use matching _nether and _the_end folders that must also be removed for a complete reset |
The Java-style separate folders do not apply |
| Keep the old world available | Change level-name to a new, unused name instead of deleting the old directory |
Move or archive the matching folder, then use a new level name or recreate the original name after backup |
| What happens to builds | They stay in the old world directory and do not appear in the new one | They stay in the old Bedrock level folder and do not appear in the replacement |
Delete the folder or change level-name?
Delete when you are certain the old world is no longer needed
Deleting the active folder lets the replacement use the same level name. It is straightforward, but it carries the greatest risk: an incorrect path or an incomplete backup can permanently remove the only accessible copy of your world. Deletion also makes it harder to compare the old and new worlds side by side.
Change the name when you want a reversible test
Changing level-name creates a new directory while leaving the old one untouched. You can test a seed, check spawn terrain, and return to the old world by stopping the server and restoring the previous level name. This consumes additional disk space, but it is the safer choice when players may want access to their existing builds.
Do not reuse a directory that already contains generated chunks
If the new name points to an existing world, Minecraft loads that world’s saved terrain. The seed value cannot retroactively replace those chunks. Use a genuinely new directory name or remove the existing directory only after backing it up.
What happens to players, inventories, and builds?
A new seed does not carry over the old world’s block data. Houses, farms, mined tunnels, chests, villages that players modified, and other placed blocks remain associated with the old world files. Player inventories and location data are also stored with the world or server data, so a clean replacement should be treated as a new survival environment unless you deliberately restore player data.

The reliable preservation method is to keep the old directory as a backup and continue running it under its original level name when needed. Combining selected structures or player data into a different world requires a separate world-editing or data-migration workflow; changing level-seed alone does not perform that merge.
If your goal is “a new landscape without losing the existing base,” make a backup first and use a new level-name for the experiment. You can then decide whether to keep the new world, return to the old one, or plan a separate, controlled transfer. Do not promise players that their builds will survive a reset unless you have an independent copy and a tested restoration plan.
Why the terrain may look unchanged
The old world folder was never removed or renamed
This is the most common explanation. The server loads the directory named by level-name and ignores the new seed for chunks that already exist. Stop the server, inspect the actual directory name, and confirm that the folder you reset is the one the server is configured to use.

A folder named world is not automatically the active level. Read the property in server.properties and match it exactly, including punctuation and capitalization where the host filesystem distinguishes them. On Bedrock, check inside worlds/; on Java, check the server’s main directory and the dimension-folder pattern used by the implementation.
A second server instance is running
If another process or service is using the same files, your edits may appear to have no effect or may be overwritten. Make sure the original process has stopped before changing files and that the startup command or panel is pointing to the installation you edited.
Only one Java dimension was reset
On Paper, Spigot, and Purpur, leaving world_nether or world_the_end in place can preserve old dimension data. For a complete Java reset, remove or archive all matching dimension folders along with the main world folder. Do this only after confirming the backup contains them.
The spawn area is similar by coincidence
Seeing familiar-looking terrain at the first location is not proof that the old world loaded. Verify the seed and inspect several newly generated areas. More importantly, check the world folder creation or modification state and the server log’s world-loading messages. If extensive explored terrain, old structures, or player builds are present, assume the old world is still active until the folder configuration is corrected.

A reported seam between old and new terrain
One third-party guide describes a visible boundary where old and newly generated terrain meet after a partial reset. That is a single low-confidence report rather than a published measurement or guaranteed behavior. Treat mixed terrain as a warning that some old region files survived the reset, not as a normal way to combine seeds. Restore from the backup and perform a clean, complete reset if you see incompatible terrain boundaries.
Commands and settings that do not change an existing seed
Editing level-seed by itself
Changing the property while retaining the existing world directory does not regenerate saved chunks. The new value will matter when Minecraft creates a world in a directory that has not already been generated.
Best Value
Using the seed-reporting command
The server’s seed command reports the seed associated with the current world. The forum discussion reviewed for this procedure does not establish that the command can replace an existing world’s seed. Use the file-and-world-reset method instead, and treat the command as a diagnostic for identifying the world currently loaded.
Restarting without a reset
A restart reloads the same world files. It is necessary after configuration changes, but it cannot turn an existing world into a different seed unless the server is also directed to a new or regenerated world directory.
A safe reset checklist
- Identify whether the server is Java or Bedrock.
- Stop the server and wait for the process to exit.
- Read and record
level-name. - Copy the active world and all applicable Java dimension folders to a separate backup location.
- Edit
level-seedwith a number, a word, or a blank value for random generation. - For Java, either delete the active folder and matching Nether/End folders or select a new unused
level-name. For Bedrock, remove or archive the matching folder beneathworlds/. - Start the server and wait until it reports readiness.
- Confirm that the new directory was created and that old builds are absent before inviting players back.
- Keep the old backup until the new world has been tested and everyone agrees that the reset is permanent.
Practical decision guide
| Your objective | Recommended action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Start over permanently with a new seed | Back up, set level-seed, remove the active world directory, and remove Java dimension folders where applicable |
The server must generate a completely new set of world files |
| Test a seed without risking the current server | Back up, set the seed, and change level-name to a new unused name |
The original directory remains available for rollback |
| Keep the old builds accessible | Do not delete the old world; archive it or keep it under its original name and run the new seed separately | Builds belong to the old world files |
| Change only Nether or End terrain | Do not assume changing level-seed will selectively regenerate a dimension; back up and plan a dimension-specific reset consistent with your server software |
The seed property describes world creation, while existing dimension folders contain saved data |
| Use a random seed | Leave level-seed blank before generating the replacement world |
A blank value lets Minecraft choose the seed at creation time |
How to return to the old world
If you used a new level-name, stop the server and change the property back to the old value. Start the server only after confirming that the old directory is still present and that your backup remains intact.
If you deleted the old directory, restore the complete backup to the expected location first. On Java, restore the main folder and any matching _nether and _the_end folders used by the server. On Bedrock, restore the backed-up folder beneath worlds/ and make level-name match it. Never restore files into a running server.
Keep the new world directory separate while testing the rollback. Mixing region files from two generations can produce missing chunks or inconsistent terrain, so restore a complete, known-good copy rather than selectively replacing random files.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change a Minecraft server seed without deleting the world?
No. You can change the text in server.properties without deleting anything, but the existing world will continue to load with its saved terrain. A different seed requires a new world directory or a reset of the existing one.
Will changing the seed delete my builds?
It will not delete them if you keep a backup or retain the old directory, but the builds will not appear in the newly generated world. They remain part of the old world.
Should I use a number or a word as the seed?
Either is accepted. Minecraft converts a word into a seed value. Leave level-seed blank when you want a randomly selected seed.
Do Java servers always need Nether and End folders deleted?
Paper, Spigot, and Purpur commonly store those dimensions in separate matching folders, so include them when you want a complete reset. Check your server’s actual directory layout before removing anything.
What if the new terrain does not appear?
Stop the server and verify that the correct folder was removed or renamed, that level-name points to the intended directory, and that no second server process is loading the old files. On Bedrock, check the matching folder under worlds/.
